MW4 DMZ Explained: Hajin, Runs and What You Keep

MW4 DMZ is the extraction mode in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, and it arrives as one of the game's three main modes, next to the Campaign and Multiplayer, when the game launches on October 23, 2026. You drop into a hostile exclusion zone, loot, fight AI forces and rival players, chase objectives, and then try to get out alive with what you found. Anything you fail to extract stays behind.

This guide pulls together what Activision and Infinity Ward have revealed ahead of launch: the map, how a single run works from infil to exfil, what you keep and lose, and the new item system built around a persistent stash. Where a topic needs more room, a deeper guide picks it up.

Digital pre-orders unlock early access on October 20, so the first squads deploy a few days before the full release. Until then, everything below comes from official intel and press previews rather than live play.

Will Modern Warfare 4 have DMZ?

Yes. The mode is confirmed as part of Modern Warfare 4 at launch, not a later update. Activision calls it Call of Duty's definitive extraction shooter, with persistent progression and an open-world combat zone. You play a shadow CIA asset sent to secure weapons and military technology left behind after the events of the campaign.

It builds on the original DMZ, which Infinity Ward ran as a years-long beta in the Modern Warfare II era. The studio says feedback from that beta shaped a deeper, more persistent version. If you have been searching for "DMZ 2.0," this is the mode, although the official name is simply DMZ.

It is a PvPvE mode. AI patrols, bosses and vehicles fill the map, and other squads deploy into the same live server. You can go in alone or with a squad, and Squad Fill matches you with two other players when you want teammates.

Hajin: the exclusion zone you deploy into

The map is Hajin, a contested zone in a border region where Russia meets the Korean peninsula. Activision's Hajin guide counts more than 60 named locations. Major points of interest include the 14th Political Prison, Chang-san Air Base, the irradiated Haneul Nuclear Reactor, NuriGO Mall and The Grid in central Hajin City.

Every location has a Threat level, from Low up to Extreme, shown under your compass. Push hard and the zone pushes back with armored troops, attack helicopters and vehicle pursuits. Kill too many hostiles in one deployment and a Hunt Squad comes after you. A radiation storm also intensifies as the match goes on, so the clock always matters.

Bosses come in two forms. Lieutenants are named high-value targets you can buy intel on before you deploy. Commanders roam the map, and they include the Colossus, a Deathstalker drone and a battle tank. Weather shifts too, with rain and fog changing how far you can see.

How a run works, from infil to exfil

Every deployment starts at the Forward Operating Base, or FOB. You pick an Operator, check your loadout and choose one of three deployment types: Story Missions, Dynamic Operations or Free Roam. Story Missions push the narrative forward. Dynamic Operations are multi-step objectives that pay DMZ Cash and XP plus a Supply Drop, and Free Roam drops you in with no assigned job.

For Dynamic Ops and Free Roam you also choose how you arrive. Going in on foot is free. Paid options range from a light vehicle air-dropped with your squad to a cargo plane that lets you pick your exact landing spot.

Inside, the loop is easy to describe and hard to execute. Open containers, complete objectives, fight or avoid other players, and keep an eye on the storm. When you are ready, head to an exfil marked by green smoke, call the helicopter and hold the area until it lands. A Fulton balloon or a flare can also get you out, and exfil sites are natural ambush points.

After every deployment, successful or not, an After Action Report grades you from F to S++ across Objectives, Combat and Looting.

What you keep and what you lose

This rule defines the mode. Gear you extract with comes home: your Loadout returns with your Operator, and you move Backpack loot into the Stash at the FOB. Fail to exfil and anything in your Backpack that is not in a Secure Slot is lost. Your Operator also goes Missing in Action, and if you pay to rescue them they come back without their gear.

Two things soften the blow. XP earned during a deployment still counts even if you die, so your level and FOB unlocks keep moving. Upgraded backpacks also add Secure Slots that protect whatever you put in them. The item-by-item breakdown is in the MW4 DMZ items guide to what you keep and lose.

The new item system in brief

The old mode had no persistent inventory. The new one is built around it. Your Stash at the FOB holds weapons, gear, consumables, keys, valuables and crafting ingredients between runs, and all of your Active Duty Operators share it. It starts at 40 items and 12 weapons and can be expanded.

Loot splits into two kinds. Crafting Resources, meaning Synthetics, Electronics, Chemicals and Metals, break down automatically as you loot and never take Stash slots. 3D Printer Ingredients stay physical, ride in your backpack and must be extracted. Both feed the 3D Printer, which crafts armor, backpacks, medical items, killstreaks and upgrades for the base.

Weapons follow different rules. The Gunsmith runs on cash, and to buy a weapon outright you first need to find and extract its Weapon Manual. Infinity Ward says this economy replaces the old insured weapon slot that returned a gun after a cooldown. The FOB guide covers every station and when it unlocks.

Operators, traits and going MIA

Active Duty Operators are persistent characters. Each one has their own Backpack, Loadout and trait tree, so a loss hits one character's kit, not your whole account. You start with two Active Duty slots, can unlock another by leveling up, and the Vault Edition starts you with three.

Operators earn Trait Points as their Dog Tag levels up, then spend them across three trees: Warfighter, Scout and Survivalist. An eliminated Operator goes MIA and cannot deploy until you pay to bring them back, and the price rises with every trait they hold. The MW4 DMZ operators guide covers slots, trees, rescue costs and Prestige.

What changed from the original DMZ

Infinity Ward's Joe Cecot has said many players in the old mode never knew what they were supposed to do. Modern Warfare 4 answers that with clearer structure: Story Missions and Dynamic Operations you choose before you deploy, plus Orders that walk you through each system.

The rest of the list is about persistence and survival. There is a persistent inventory, a base you upgrade, a 3D Printer and a cash-driven Gunsmith. Health caps at 150 and regenerates, a tourniquet lets you pick yourself up once when you are downed without a self-revive, and a Stealth Meter warns solo players before AI spots them. Proximity chat now has distance falloff and direction.

Price is the other big change. The first version was free alongside Warzone, but this one comes with the paid game. The details are in is MW4 DMZ free, with release dates and editions.

Where camo progress fits in DMZ

Extraction runs also feed your weapon grind. Activision's Hajin guide notes that combat inside the mode earns XP, advances weapon progression and completes camo challenges, and weapon levels are shared with Multiplayer. There is also a separate mastery track for this mode, with Chiral, Ripple Tide and Helio listed as its mastery camos.

That matters because every camo kill happens while your gear is at risk. If camos are your main goal, read how MW4 DMZ camo challenges work and the Helio camo breakdown before you build your first loadout.

The Multiplayer and Warzone camo tracks are covered in the Orion Reforged and Empyros guides, and the store's Modern Warfare 4 listings are on the Modern Warfare 4 hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Modern Warfare 4 have DMZ?

Yes. DMZ is one of the three modes in Modern Warfare 4 and launches with the game on October 23, 2026. Players who digitally pre-ordered get early access from October 20.

Is MW4 DMZ PvP or PvE?

Both. You fight AI forces, Lieutenants and Commanders, and other player squads deploy into the same zone. Activision has not announced a PvE-only playlist ahead of launch.

Can you play MW4 DMZ solo?

Yes. You can deploy alone with Squad Fill turned off. Solo-friendly features include the tourniquet, which gets you up from a downed state, and the Stealth Meter, which warns you before AI enemies spot you.

How many players are in a DMZ squad?

Activision has not stated a maximum squad size. Squad Fill drops you into a deployment with two other allied players, which points to three-player squads.

Do you lose XP if you die in DMZ?

No. XP earned during a deployment counts even if you fail to exfil. What you lose is gear: anything in your backpack outside a Secure Slot, plus the loadout your Operator carried.
