MW4 Ending Explained: Who Dies, Who Lives, Post-Credits

Spoiler warning: this page explains the whole Modern Warfare 4 campaign, including the final mission, every major character death and the post-credits scene. If you have not finished the story yet, bookmark it and come back.

Campaign early access opened on 16 October and the full game launches on 23 October. Every story beat below is checked against at least two published recaps - IGN, Game8, Insider Gaming, Sportskeeda and AllThingsHow among them - plus Activision's own posts where they exist.

The short answer: Captain Price dies in the final mission after killing the Archer, Gaz is executed earlier in the story, and Ghost is the only original Task Force 141 member still alive at the end. No choice changes any of that. After the credits, Kate Laswell erases the team's records and hands her role to a successor, pointing the story at DMZ.

How the final missions play out

The campaign runs to 16 missions, and the last two split the ending between its two storylines. In Decapitation, mission 15, Private Park's squad Sierra-1 and Ghost assault North Korea's presidential palace and kill Ri Ju-Young, who murdered her brother to seize power and then launched the invasion. Lieutenant Ko Jin-Hyuk, the officer who defected to Sierra-1, stays behind in North Korea.

Then the credits start, but the campaign is not over. Greater Good, the 16th mission, plays partway through them. Price, the Archer's prisoner since the failed escape, is being moved in a Konni convoy when Ghost ambushes it. The truck crashes, Price frees himself despite a metal pipe lodged in his abdomen, and you chase the Archer through a snowy forest to a frozen lake, where Price kills him at close quarters.

Does Price die in MW4?

Yes. Price wins the fight, but the injuries from the crash and the struggle are too much. Ghost reaches him on the ice, Price uses his last words to admit that Gaz was right about holding the line, and he dies with his old squadmate beside him. Ghost closes his eyes. Finishing the mission unlocks Hold the Line, the achievement for completing the campaign.

Is he really gone? IGN put that to Infinity Ward narrative director Jeff Negus, who said the team "went out of our way in this game to pace character deaths" and that "that scene is consistent with others." Not a flat yes, and IGN's own verdict was that he is dead, with the door left slightly ajar. With Laswell deleting his file minutes later, treat Price as dead as of 21 October.

Does Ghost die in MW4?

No. Simon "Ghost" Riley survives and is the last original Task Force 141 member left standing: Soap was killed by Makarov in 2023's Modern Warfare III, and Gaz and Price die in this one. After closing Price's eyes, Ghost picks up the canister holding the Archer's EMP device and walks away alone. Survival is a thin reward, though: his record is deleted in the post-credits scene with the others.

You may have seen YouTube clips billed as a "secret Ghost death scene". The creators who posted them describe a hidden interrogation scene most players never see. We found no written source explaining what triggers it, so treat it as unconfirmed as of 21 October. It is not how the story ends.

Does Gaz die in MW4?

Yes, and earlier than most players expect. After the Mumbai handover goes wrong, the Archer holds Price, Ghost and Gaz captive in North Korea and tells them Task Force 141 will be framed for the assassination of the Supreme Leader, Ri Seung-Ho. Then he shoots Gaz in the head, in front of both men. It happens just before mission 13, Escape.

In Escape, Price breaks out and frees Ghost from an interrogation room. Ghost gets away; Price is recaptured. The Archer reveals he is Vladimir Makarov's father, keeping Price alive to make him suffer for killing his son in mission 2. He also lets slip that Korea is a test run for his EMP weapons ahead of a Russian invasion of Europe.

Who dies in MW4: the full list

Two familiar names are missing for a reason. Soap died in Modern Warfare III (2023), killed by Makarov, and Price assassinated General Shepherd in that game's mid-credits scene - which is why he starts MW4 as a disavowed fugitive.

Can you save Cho, and do your choices change the ending?

No to both. Private Cho Han, the Sierra-1 private everyone calls Chow, is badly wounded on the way into North Korea, and Park carries him through Survivors after he collapses. Game8 notes the dialogue choices on that walk do not change the mission. He dies of his wounds during Stranded while Park is out on the sabotage objectives, on a fixed trigger after the third one. Activision's campaign reward list does open with a "Cho" Base Operator, unlocked for finishing Mayhem.

MW4 does put real decisions in front of you, but none of them branch the story, and there is one ending:

  • Following Orders (mission 3), the defector. As an unnamed North Korean soldier, you are ordered to hang a defector. Execute him and the mission moves on; refuse and Ri Ju-Young shoots you, then has him hanged anyway. The mission does not fail.
  • Following Orders, the hidden woman. Keep her hidden and another soldier finds her, and Ri executes you as a traitor. Hand her over and she is executed with the villagers. She dies either way, and handing her over is the only route to the No Stone Unturned achievement, because the last note is in her cellar.
  • Hired Gun (mission 4), Graves. Shoot at the FIRE prompt and Price kills him; hold fire and Graves kills you, which fails the mission back to a checkpoint.

The post-credits scene: Laswell, the Watcher Program and DMZ

Stay through the rest of the credits. Kate Laswell, Price's former CIA handler, sits at a laptop and permanently deletes three personnel records: Gaz, Ghost and Price. A woman then joins her. Laswell explains that she is stepping back and that operations are moving into the DMZ, and welcomes the newcomer to the Watcher Program as its new head. None of the coverage we checked names her.

That scene is the bridge into the new mode. Activision's DMZ deep dive describes it as "tied directly to the events of the Campaign", its reveal post casts you as "an off-the-books asset" recovering military technology left in the wake of war, and its Hajin intel post name-checks a "Watcher 2" in a recon report. Add Ghost walking off with the EMP device and DMZ reads as the next chapter, not a side mode. Our DMZ explainer covers how the mode works, and the DMZ story missions guide covers its story content.

Is this the end of the Modern Warfare reboot?

Activision sold MW4 as the finale - the campaign trailer's description promises "the epic conclusion" - and with Soap, Gaz and Price gone and the task force erased, it plays like one. Asked by IGN whether this ends the rebooted saga, Negus answered "I don't know," adding that the team "tried to tell a definitive, conclusive story." He also said there was no long-term plan for the story when the reboot began in 2019.

The honest read as of 21 October: Price's arc is closed, Ghost is the loose end, and the Watcher Program gives Activision a ready-made way forward through DMZ, with Season 1 arriving on 6 November.

If you are heading back in, the 16 campaign completion rewards - eight Base Operators including Cho, Kal and Park, five XP tokens, a calling card, an emblem and a loading screen - become usable in multiplayer and DMZ at launch, and Realism difficulty unlocks once you finish the story. Operators are covered in the DMZ operators guide. The wider launch picture is on our Modern Warfare 4 hub, where the campaign completion rewards are also offered if you would rather not replay anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Captain Price really dead in MW4?

Every recap treats it as a death: he dies of his wounds on the frozen lake after killing the Archer, with Ghost beside him. Infinity Ward's Jeff Negus would only tell IGN the scene is "consistent with others". Treat him as dead unless Activision says otherwise.

Who kills Gaz in MW4?

The Archer. He shoots Gaz in the head while Gaz, Price and Ghost are held captive in North Korea, just before the Escape mission, after telling them Task Force 141 will be framed for the Supreme Leader's assassination.

Who is the Archer in MW4?

The Russian Defense Minister who runs the Konni ultranationalist PMC, played by Mads Mikkelsen. In Escape he reveals he is Makarov's father. He backs Ri Ju-Young's coup to test his EMP weapons in Korea, and Price kills him in Greater Good.

Can you save Cho in MW4?

No. Pvt. Cho "Chow" Han dies of his wounds during Stranded while Park is away on the sabotage objectives. The death is scripted, and nothing you say or do changes it.

Does MW4 have multiple endings?

No. Following Orders and Hired Gun offer choices, but each one either ends in the same story outcome or fails the mission. The final mission and post-credits scene are the same for everyone.

Is there a post-credits scene in MW4?

Yes. After the credits, Laswell deletes the records of Gaz, Ghost and Price and hands the Watcher Program to a successor, with operations moving into the DMZ. The final mission itself plays partway through the credits, so do not skip them.
