Auto-pop is when a PS5 version of a game unlocks trophies on its own list the moment it reads progress you already made, usually from an imported PS4 save, so you get the PS5 trophies without replaying. Only some games do it: Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered and Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade are well-known examples, while games like Stray need a fresh run on each list. This page covers how PS5 trophy auto-pop works, the steps to trigger it, confirmed examples on both sides, and the pitfalls that stop it working.
We checked this against PlayStation Universe's auto-pop list, the PlayStation Blog's PS4-on-PS5 FAQ, PlayStation's backward compatibility page, PlayStation LifeStyle's July 2025 Call of Duty report, Gfinity's Spider-Man Remastered guide and PowerPyx roadmaps in November 2026.
What Auto-Pop Means
When a game launched on both PS4 and PS5, the PS5 version very often got its own trophy list. That list starts empty. Auto-pop describes what happens when the PS5 version can see progress from the other version, typically by loading a transferred save, and immediately awards every trophy whose condition that save already meets. PlayStation Universe summed it up in its June 2021 guide: if you earned the platinum on one system, the matching trophies on the other will pop once your progress has been transferred.

The result is a second set of trophies, often including a second platinum, on a separate list. Hunters use the term loosely, so you may also see it applied to games that pop trophies when you simply launch a new release of the same title. The common thread is that you get trophies for progress you made earlier rather than for playing through again.
It is not a console feature you switch on. Whether a game reads old progress and pops trophies is entirely up to how the developer built it. The PlayStation Blog's October 2020 FAQ on PS4 games on PS5 said cross-generation save support is a developer decision that varies title by title, and auto-pop follows from that decision.
Games That Auto-Pop
Here are documented examples, each with the source that reported it:
- Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered. Gfinity's guide says that if you already hold the PS4 platinum, transferring your save to PS5 and loading it should award the PS5 platinum automatically.
- Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade. PlayStation Universe lists it, noting that trophies pop when you transfer your save to PS5.
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Modern Warfare III. PlayStation LifeStyle reported on July 30, 2025 that both were re-released as standalone titles with new trophy sets, that MW3 gained its first PS5 platinum, and that all trophies unlocked in the previous versions would auto-pop when you boot the new version.
- PlayStation Universe's 2021 list also names Marvel's Avengers, Destiny 2, Fortnite, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, No Man's Sky, Outriders, Rainbow Six Siege, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2, World of Warships Legends and Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time.
Treat older lists as a starting point rather than a promise. That PlayStation Universe guide dates from June 2021, and game updates, server changes and re-releases can change how a title behaves. Before you count on a free platinum, check a recent trophy guide or forum thread for the specific game.
How to Trigger an Auto-Pop
For save-based auto-pop, the process is the same in almost every case: get your old save onto the PS5, then let the PS5 version read it.

- Confirm the game supports it. Look up the title first. If it does not read PS4 saves, none of the steps below will help.
- Move the save. PlayStation's backward compatibility page says you can transfer digital games and game data from a PS4 to a PS5 over Wi-Fi, and the PlayStation Blog adds LAN cables as an option. PS Plus members can also upload PS4 saves to cloud storage and download them on PS5.
- Install the PS5 version. Many eligible PS4 games can be upgraded to the digital PS5 version, sometimes at no extra cost and sometimes for a fee, depending on the game.
- Load the save inside the PS5 version. Some games prompt you to import on first launch; others have an import option in a menu. The trophies pop as the game reads your progress.
- Sync. Open Trophies, press Options and choose Sync Trophies, which is the PS5 path PlayStation's support page lists, so the new list appears everywhere.
Check upgrade eligibility before you plan around a free second list. PlayStation's upgrade page notes that disc-based upgrades need a PS5 with a disc drive and the PS4 disc inserted every time you play the PS5 version, and that PS4 games redeemed through PS Plus are generally not eligible for upgrade at all. If your copy came from a monthly PS Plus lineup, the PS5 version may have to be bought separately before any import can happen.
Use the same PlayStation Network account throughout. Trophies, saves and purchases are tied to one account, so a save from a family member's profile will not pop anything on yours. If the trophies do not appear after loading, our checklist for PS5 trophies that did not unlock covers the sync and version checks to try next.
Games That Do Not Auto-Pop
Plenty of popular games give you a separate PS5 list with no way to carry progress across. Knowing this before you start saves a lot of disappointment:
- Stray. PowerPyx notes the game is cross-buy eligible but has no save transfer and no auto-pop, so each list needs its own playthrough. A repeat run is short, though: PowerPyx estimates two to three hours if you are stacking a second list.
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2. It is a PS5 exclusive with no PS4 version, so there is nothing to pop from. PowerPyx confirms no auto-pop or cross-buy.
- Maneater. PlayStation Universe reported in October 2020 that the developer called the PS5 version a separate application where trophies, stats and saves would not transfer.
- PS Plus Premium PS1 classics. Push Square reported in May 2022 that these have separate, identical PS4 and PS5 lists, so you can earn everything twice, but only by playing on each console.
If you are choosing which version to play for the first time, this is the key question to answer. For a game that auto-pops, playing the PS4 version first and transferring later can give you both lists for one run. For a game that does not, pick the version you care about and stick with it. Our guide to PS4 trophies on PS5 explains how the two lists appear side by side on your console.
How Auto-Pop Affects Your Profile
An auto-popped list counts just like any other list. Using the community-derived values, the platinum is worth 300 points and every other trophy adds its usual value, so a big list popping in one go can move your level noticeably, especially at lower levels. Separate stacks of the same game each count on their own, which matters a great deal to players chasing the top of the leaderboards. Our look at the highest trophy levels on PSN shows how those numbers add up.
Third-party trackers do not all treat stacks the same way. The PSN100 tracker, for example, explains on its methodology page that it merges game stacks and filters out unobtainable trophies before calculating its own rankings, so a second auto-popped platinum may not raise your position there the way it raises your console level.
There is also a community debate about whether auto-popped platinums are as meaningful as earned ones. That is a matter of taste rather than rules. On the console they sit in your trophy list and feed your level like any other trophy.
Pitfalls to Watch For
A few things regularly trip people up:
- Wrong version installed. Launching the PS4 version on a PS5 adds to the PS4 list, not the PS5 one. Check the game's tile before you load anything.
- Re-release confusion. PlayStation LifeStyle reported that the 2025 Modern Warfare II and III standalone releases prompted some existing digital and disc owners to buy them again. Check ownership carefully before paying for a re-release just for the auto-pop.
- Missing the condition on the original list. Spider-Man Remastered's PS5 platinum, for example, relies on you already holding the PS4 platinum, according to Gfinity. A partial PS4 save only pops what it covers.
- Assuming every cross-gen game works the same. Lists of auto-pop games age quickly. Check per title.
If you are shopping for a game where a second list is worth the effort, pick ones with short and forgiving trophy lists. Our roundup of easy PS5 platinum trophies includes Stray, which does not auto-pop but is one of the quickest repeat runs around.
When There Is No Auto-Pop to Lean On
For PS5 lists that start from zero with no import option, the choice is a second playthrough or getting the list completed another way. The store's PS5 Trophy Platinum Services page adds the platinum and all trophies for the PS5 games you choose, with Instant Time Stamps or Legit Time Stamps selected at checkout.
That page covers PS5 games only, and only titles on the list it links, which it says updates daily. For PS4 and PS3 lists or larger packages, browse the full PlayStation trophy section and read each product page for its platforms.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does auto-pop mean for PS5 trophies?
It means a game unlocks trophies on its PS5 list automatically by reading progress you already made, usually from a transferred PS4 save, instead of making you replay.
Does Spider-Man Remastered auto-pop the platinum?
According to Gfinity, yes, if you already have the PS4 platinum and load your transferred save in the PS5 version.
Does Stray auto-pop between PS4 and PS5?
No. PowerPyx notes Stray is cross-buy but has no save transfer or auto-pop, so each list needs its own run.
Do I need PS Plus to transfer saves for auto-pop?
Not necessarily. You can transfer from a PS4 to a PS5 over Wi-Fi or a LAN cable. Cloud storage is the route that requires PS Plus.
Do auto-popped trophies count toward my level?
Yes. They are normal trophies on a normal list and add the usual points for their grade.
Did Modern Warfare II and III get auto-pop?
PlayStation LifeStyle reported in July 2025 that trophies from the earlier versions auto-pop when you boot the new standalone releases.
