PS5 Trophy Didn't Unlock? Sync, Version and Bug Fixes

PlayStation Trophies YouTube thumbnail: PS5 Trophies Not Unlocking? Do This Now to Fix Achievements Fast!

When a trophy you clearly earned did not unlock on your PS5, the cause is usually one of four things: the trophy has not synced yet, you are playing a different version of the game than the list you are checking, the requirement is stricter than it looks, or the game itself has a trophy bug. Work through those in order and most missing PS5 trophies turn up or get explained within a few minutes. This page covers each check, the console-side fixes Sony documents, and when it is time to contact the developer instead.

We checked this against PlayStation's trophy, Safe Mode and console sharing support pages, the PS4 user's guide, PowerPyx trophy guides for Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart and Marvel's Spider-Man 2, and Push Square's PSN outage coverage in November 2026.

Step One: Rule Out a Sync Delay

Trophies are recorded on the console first and then synchronized with the PlayStation Network server. The PS4 user's guide describes this plainly: earned trophies are saved to the system and synchronized automatically. Most of the time the upload is instant, but a busy connection, a short outage or a console that went to rest mode mid-sync can leave a trophy sitting locally while your phone app or a tracker website shows nothing.

Force the issue before you assume anything is broken. On PS5, open your profile, choose Trophies, press the Options button and select Sync Trophies, which is the path PlayStation's support page lists. On a PS4, the equivalent is Trophies, then Options, then Sync With PlayStation Network. Give it a few seconds, then reopen the game's list.

If you played while the console had no connection at all, the trophy will be waiting for the next sync. Our guide to earning trophies offline on PS5 covers what happens during outages and how to make sure an offline session uploads cleanly once you reconnect.

Step Two: Check You Are Looking at the Right List

A surprising number of "missing" trophies are sitting on a different list. Many cross-generation games ship with one trophy list for the PS4 version and a separate list for the PS5 version. If you launched the PS4 version through backward compatibility, any trophy you earned went onto the PS4 list, even though you were playing on a PS5. If you then open the PS5 list, it will look like nothing popped.

The same goes the other way. Starting the PS5 version usually creates a new list at 0 percent, and trophies you earned on PS4 years ago do not appear on it unless that particular game is built to read your old save and unlock matching trophies. The PlayStation Blog's 2020 PS4-on-PS5 FAQ notes that cross-generation save transfer is a developer decision that varies title by title, so there is no single rule. Our walkthrough of how PS4 trophies appear on a PS5 shows how to tell the two versions apart in your library.

Classic games add another layer. Push Square reported in May 2022 that PS1 titles in PS Plus Premium with trophy support come with two separate lists, one for PS5 and one for PS4, with identical content. Play a classic on your PS4 one night and on your PS5 the next, and your progress is split across two lists. Check which one you are viewing before chasing a bug that does not exist.

Step Three: Reread the Requirement

Trophy descriptions are short, and the small print often lives in a guide rather than in the game. Before blaming the console, confirm exactly what the trophy wants: a difficulty setting from the start, a single unbroken run, a specific character, or an action that must happen after a story point.

  • Difficulty locks. Some lists only count a finish on a set difficulty, and lowering it mid-run can void the trophy.
  • Time limits. Stray's "I am Speed" Gold trophy requires finishing the game in under two hours, and PowerPyx recommends aiming for about 1 hour 30 minutes to leave a buffer.
  • Playthrough counts. Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales caps the first playthrough at level 20, so trophies tied to level 30 need New Game+.
  • DLC trophies. Trophies listed under an add-on only unlock if that add-on is installed and owned on the same account.

Hidden trophies are a common trap here because you cannot read the requirement until you reveal it. If the trophy you expected is hidden, our guide to viewing hidden trophies on PS5 shows how to reveal one trophy or a whole list at once, with a spoiler warning for story games.

Step Four: Check for a Known Game Bug

Sometimes the trophy is simply broken, and the fix comes from the developer rather than from your console. Two well-documented examples from recent PlayStation exclusives show what this looks like:

  • Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. PowerPyx notes that the "Shifty Character" trophy now only needs 29 of 30 Blizon Crystals after patch v1.001.002, a change that stopped it from being effectively missable. Commenters on that guide also report occasional failures to pop on other trophies.
  • Marvel's Spider-Man 2. PowerPyx warns that the Gold trophy for full district completion can become unobtainable if a collectible fails to register on the map counter, with Hunter Blinds the most affected. Its advice is to check the counter after each collectible and keep manual saves in separate slots.

The pattern is the same for any game. Search the trophy's name together with "glitched" on a major guide site, check the game's latest patch notes, and look at the developer's support forum. If a fix exists, it is usually a game update, so make sure the game is fully patched before replaying the section.

If you find no reports at all and you are certain the requirement was met, report it to the developer with the trophy name, platform version and the save state you used. Developers can only fix what they can reproduce. A screenshot of the trophy list next to your in-game progress screen, or a short clip of the moment the condition was met, makes a report far more useful than a description alone.

Step Five: Console and Network Fixes

When the list is right, the requirement was met and no bug is known, a few console-side steps clear most remaining cases:

  1. Check the PlayStation Network status page. If a service alert is showing, wait for it to clear before syncing again. In February 2025, PSN went down for roughly 24 hours, and The Sixth Axis reported that Sony only said services had recovered from an "operational issue."
  2. Fully restart the console, not rest mode, and sync again from the Trophies menu.
  3. Rebuild the database. PlayStation's Safe Mode page says Rebuild Database scans the drive and creates a new database of all content, which helps when system features misbehave. To reach it, hold the power button for three seconds to turn the console off, then hold it again until the second beep, connect a controller with a USB cable and press the PS button. Choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, then Rebuild Database.
  4. Back up first. Sony's Safe Mode page warns that some options delete data. Rebuild Database is not one of the reset options, but having your saves in cloud storage or on USB is a sensible precaution before you touch any Safe Mode menu.

Avoid the reset options entirely for a trophy problem. Reset PS5 deletes all user data, and it will not bring back a trophy that never registered in the first place.

Account Mistakes That Look Like Missing Trophies

Trophies belong to the account that was signed in when they unlocked. If a family member's profile was active, the trophy went to them. The PS4 user's guide adds that a guest user must sign in to PlayStation Network to save trophies, so a session played on a guest login without signing in may never reach your list.

Another trap is expecting older progress to carry over automatically. Some cross-gen games read your PS4 save on PS5 and unlock matching trophies, but many do not. Before you replay a whole game hoping for a pop, check whether that title is one of the ones that does it. Our explainer on PS5 auto-pop platinums lists confirmed examples and the games that need a fresh run.

Finally, remember that trophy timing depends on the game, not the console. Some trophies pop the moment the condition is met, others only when you return to a menu, finish a chapter or save. If a trophy is tied to an end-of-chapter tally, play to the next checkpoint before you assume it failed.

When the Replay Is Not Worth It

Sometimes the honest answer is that a bugged or missed trophy means another long playthrough, and not everyone has a free weekend for a second 30-hour run. The store's PlayStation trophy section collects its trophy and platinum services across PS3, PS4 and PS5 in one place, so you can see which games and timestamp options are available before deciding whether to replay or hand the list off.

Each product page there spells out its own platforms and how trophies are added, so read the specific page for your game and console before you order. If you do decide to replay, the checks above should at least make sure the second run actually counts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my PS5 trophy not pop?

The usual causes are a pending sync, earning it on the PS4 list instead of the PS5 list, a requirement you did not fully meet, or a known game bug. Sync manually first, then check the version.

How do I sync trophies on PS5?

Open your profile, select Trophies, press Options and choose Sync Trophies. PlayStation's support page lists this as the PS5 path.

Does rebuilding the database fix trophies?

It can help when system features misbehave, because it rebuilds the console's content database. It will not create a trophy the game never awarded.

Will a glitched trophy ever be fixed?

Only the developer can fix it, usually through a game patch. Check patch notes and report the issue with your platform version and save details.

Do PS4 trophies unlock on the PS5 version?

Only in games built to read your PS4 save and unlock matching trophies. Most cross-gen games keep separate lists that start from zero.

Can I earn trophies while PSN is down?

Trophies are saved to the console and synchronized later, so play on and run a manual sync once the network is back.
