Crimson Desert Chapters: Full Main Story List and Order

Crimson Desert YouTube thumbnail: All 12 Chapters of Crimson Desert Explained! (Crimson Desert Story Explained)

Crimson Desert's main story has 14 parts: a Prologue, twelve numbered chapters and an Epilogue called "Journey's End." The chapters run from "The First Encounter" through "The Abyss," and several of them double as unlock gates for camp features, elemental skills, mounts and the Charting the Unknown DLC. Below is the full order with each chapter's story arcs, plus the milestones worth knowing about before you reach them.

We checked the chapter list against Destructoid's main quest list and Shacknews, then cross-referenced the unlock points with Game8, PowerPyx's trophy roadmap and Pearl Abyss's official patch notes in November 2026.

How Many Chapters Crimson Desert Has

Shacknews describes the campaign as a prologue, twelve distinct chapters and an epilogue, which is where the commonly quoted figure of 14 comes from. Some guides count only the twelve numbered chapters, so if you see "12 chapters" and "14 chapters" in different places, both are describing the same structure.

Each chapter is split into named story arcs, and each arc contains several quests. Chapter 2, for example, has three arcs ("Unexpected Gift," "Hernand in Chaos" and "The End of Greed") with more than a dozen quests between them, while the Epilogue is a single arc of eight quests. Your Journal tracks them under the main quest tab, and patch 2.00.00, the Enhanced update, improved the main quest UI so the structure is easier to follow.

The main story also sits beside a large amount of optional content. Faction questlines such as Grounds of the Sunrise, the Greymane camp's own chain, matter just as much for unlocking features as the numbered chapters do, which is why two players at the same chapter can have very different tools available.

Every Chapter in Order

Spoiler note: chapter and arc titles hint at story events and at least one major villain. If you want to go in completely blind, skip the table below and jump to the milestones section.

The chapters vary a lot in size. Chapter 9 is the longest by arc count, with six arcs, while Chapters 10 to 12 each have two arcs. Chapters 6 and 7 both carry four arcs, so the stretch from Chapter 6 through Chapter 9 holds 17 of the 39 arcs listed in the table, the densest part of the campaign.

Chapter Milestones That Unlock Features

This is the part most chapter lists skip. Several systems are tied to specific chapters, and knowing where they land helps you plan side content and avoid wondering why something is still locked.

  • Chapter 1, The First Encounter. Finishing it awards the Novice Adventurer trophy.
  • Chapter 2, Golden Greed. Ends with the fight against Kailok, the Hornsplitter, after which you receive the Sword of the Lord automatically. Since patch 2.00.00, Bilwise also rewards "Double Jump" during the quest "Unexpected Gift" in this chapter.
  • Chapter 3, Howling Hill. Activating the camp here earns Master Camper, and it is the gateway to most camp content. Completing Howling Hill and expanding the camp also starts "A Wider World," the ship questline from the DLC.
  • Chapter 4, The Price of Knowledge. After you defeat Tenebrum, Dean Gundrir hands over the Key to the Spire of the Stars, which leads to the Courtyard of Precision and the Lightning element.
  • Chapter 5, Guest Unbidden. Defeating the Crowcaller rewards the Blackwing Mask and Blackwing Leather Armor, two pieces of a set that guides recommend for Kliff through the middle of the game, so this boss is worth beating before you push into the war chapters that follow.
  • Chapter 7, Homecoming. Completing it earns Protector of Pailune, and afterward you can relocate the Greymane camp to Pailune for the Proud Returnee trophy.
  • Chapter 8, Blood Coronation. Lucian Bastier drops the key to the Spire of Clockwork when you defeat him as Damiane, opening the route to the Wind element. Moren, the Mistwood Huntmaster, whose horn crafts the Icicle Edge Alpine Ibex mount sigil, is also fought in this chapter.
  • Chapter 10, Counterattack. The A.T.A.G mech unlocks during a quest in this chapter.
  • Chapter 11, Truth and Reality. Ends with the Blackstar Dragon, the flying mount, just before the final chapter.
  • Epilogue, Journey's End. Expert Storyteller requires all main quests and unlocks after the first Epilogue quest. Completing Journey's End opens the DLC character stories, Drakesfall Castle and the Garden of Trials.

For the elements specifically, our guide to Crimson Desert elemental powers walks through each Spire and Abyss route these keys open.

Can You Replay Chapters?

Not directly. PowerPyx's trophy guide states that free roam is available after the story, but quests cannot be replayed. That matters for anyone chasing story-linked challenges, because there is no chapter select to go back to a missed moment.

Your safety net is the save system. PowerPyx lists 9 manual save slots and 3 autosave slots, so keeping a manual save at the start of each chapter is cheap insurance. If something goes wrong in a later chapter, you can roll back without losing the whole run.

The Enhanced update added a second option for players who want to see the story again. Patch 2.00.00 introduced a feature that carries Abyss Links and other in-game currency over from an existing save when you start a new game, available after completing all main quests. Patch 2.03.00 added that 1,000 or more Silver from the old save is awarded as stackable silver pouches in the new game. It is not a true New Game Plus with gear and progress, but it gives a second playthrough a head start.

What the Enhanced Update Changed in the Story

If you finished the campaign at launch and are wondering whether a replay is worth it, patch 2.00.00 is the reason to consider one. Pearl Abyss's notes describe improvements to the main story and its narrative flow, with new knowledge, items, memory fragments, dialogue lines and conversations added to give the bosses more context. The Enhanced update also added five voice languages and eight new skills for Kliff that unlock at a certain point in the main story.

One practical effect: Enhanced reset all existing skill progression the first time the game launched after the update, refunding the resources spent, including Abyss Artifacts. Players who returned mid-chapter found their skill trees empty and needed to spend everything again, so if that happens to you, it is intended behavior rather than a corrupted save.

Difficulty and Characters Across the Campaign

The campaign launched with a single difficulty, and patch 1.04.00 added Easy, Normal and Hard options under Settings, Play. Easy reduces the damage you take and lowers enemy health, aggression and speed, while Hard raises all of those and delays food effects until the eating animation finishes. You can change the setting during the campaign, and PowerPyx notes that difficulty has no effect on trophies, so dropping to Easy for a boss that is holding up a chapter costs you nothing on the trophy list.

Kliff carries most chapters, but the story also hands control to Damiane and Oongka at key moments; the Chapter 8 key drop above, for instance, comes from a fight you take as Damiane. Pearl Abyss spent much of the summer improving the other two characters. Its June 2026 dev update promised adjustments so all three playable characters get a share of the spotlight, patch 1.13.00 let Oongka and Damiane enter the Abyss, and the Enhanced update made skill resets work per character, with each character spending their own Abyss Links. If you have been neglecting them, investing in their skill trees before the late chapters makes those sections smoother, and it matters again after the credits because the Garden of Trials lets you queue all three.

How the Chapters Connect to the DLC

Charting the Unknown hooks into the campaign at two points. The ocean content follows Chapter 3, while the three new character quests, one each for Kliff, Oongka and Damiane, appear in the Journal only after you complete Journey's End. Our Crimson Desert DLC guide lists every unlock condition and the release details.

A few habits keep the campaign smooth if you plan to play the expansion:

  • Push through Chapter 3 early and invest in the camp, since it unlocks the most side systems.
  • Activate travel points as you pass through each chapter's regions; our fast travel guide explains how Abyss Nexus and Cresset points work.
  • Track the chapter-linked trophies as you go, especially the challenge-based ones that can be missed. Our Crimson Desert trophies breakdown lists which activities feed each one.

Unlock Everything Without Losing Your Place

Because chapters gate so many systems, some players reach Chapter 4 or 5 and want the mid-game tools without rushing the story. The store's Crimson Desert Unlock All Pack is applied to your account on PS5, Xbox or PC, adds everything to your latest save instead of replacing it, and leaves your quests exactly where they are. The page says it can be done at any level, location or quest, and lists all fast travel, all elements with the full skill tree, all mounts and pets, and weapons and armor at max level 10 among the contents. You must already own the game, and the delivery is done by logging in to your account.

Smaller, more targeted options are listed on the Crimson Desert services hub.
