Crimson Desert Elemental Powers: How to Unlock All 4

Crimson Desert YouTube thumbnail: How To Unlock All ELEMENTAL Powers in Crimson Desert!

Crimson Desert has four elemental powers, Frost, Flame, Lightning and Wind, and none of them come from simply spending skill points. Each one unlocks when you restore a specific Abyss sky island by solving its puzzle, reached through one of the Spires scattered across Pywel. Once you have at least one, the Imbue Element skill lets you add elemental effects to your regular attacks. This guide covers every route, the story keys you need, how imbuing works after the Enhanced update, and which order makes sense.

We checked the routes and mechanics against Game8's elemental skill guide (updated October 2026), PowerPyx, GameRiv, Final Boss and Pearl Abyss's official patch notes in November 2026.

The Four Elements and Where They Come From

PowerPyx puts it plainly: all four elements are unlocked by restoring Abysses, the floating islands above the world, and each Abyss has one puzzle that powers it back up. The Spires on the ground are the entry points, so you solve or open the right Spire before you can reach its Abyss. The game itself does not explain this; hovering over the elemental skills only tells you that learning the element is a prerequisite.

  • Frost: Frost Mantle, from the Path of Trials puzzle.
  • Flame: Flame Strike, from the Tree of Slumber puzzle.
  • Lightning: Lightning Surge, from the Courtyard of Precision puzzle.
  • Wind: Storm Veil, from the Riddle Square puzzle.

The skill names above are Kliff's. GameRiv notes that the other characters get their own versions; for Lightning, Damiane's is Lightning Strike and Oongka's is Lightning Pulse. The unlock itself is shared, but how each character uses it differs.

Frost and Flame: The Spire of Ringing Truth Route

Frost and Flame share one chain of Abyss islands, which is why many players get them close together. According to Game8, the chain starts at the Abyss Gate on top of the Spire of Ringing Truth in Pailune, and the gate only opens after you defeat Priscus the Ancient.

  1. Defeat Priscus the Ancient and enter the Abyss Gate atop the Spire of Ringing Truth.
  2. Activate the light bridges through Spire of Ringing Truth, Ether Rest and Frostbitten Paradise.
  3. Solve the Path of Trials puzzle to unlock Frost Mantle.
  4. Keep going: activate the bridges through Path of Trials, Sanctorum of Darkness and Loop of Life.
  5. Solve the Tree of Slumber puzzle to unlock Flame Strike.

GameRiv also mentions that the Tree of Slumber can be reached from Root's End Ruin, so if the light bridge route is giving you trouble there is an alternative way in. GameRiv describes Frost as an early Abyss route out of Pailune, which is the main reason it is often recommended as a first element: the boss gate is the only real barrier, and no story key is involved.

Lightning: The Spire of the Stars Route

Lightning is tied to the story. Game8 explains that you need the Key to the Spire of the Stars, which Dean Gundrir gives you after you defeat Tenebrum in Chapter 4. Once the main quest returns you to the open world, the Spire of the Stars in Hernand becomes your entry point.

  1. Finish the Tenebrum fight in Chapter 4 and collect the key from Dean Gundrir.
  2. Enter through the Spire of the Stars in Hernand.
  3. Activate the light bridges through Spire of the Stars, Sanctorum of Insight, Secret Garden and Vault of Vengeance.
  4. Solve the Courtyard of Precision puzzle to unlock Lightning Surge.

Sources disagree about which element most players get first. Some guides describe Lightning as the usual first unlock because the story hands you the key, while GameRiv recommends Frost first. Both are valid; the game does not force an order. If you are following the story closely, the Lightning key may simply arrive before you have explored Pailune.

Wind: The Spire of Clockwork Route

Wind comes last for almost everyone, because its key is a late story reward. Game8 says you enter through the Spire of Clockwork in Demeniss, and the key drops from Lucian Bastier in Chapter 8; you defeat him as Damiane. GameRiv lists the route as Spire of Clockwork, then the Abyss Gate, then Riddle Square, and ties it to finishing Chapter 8, Blood Coronation.

You will see Wind credited to "Riddle Square" in some lists and to the "Spire of Clockwork" in others. They describe the same route, one naming the puzzle and the other the entrance, and both Game8's October update and GameRiv agree on it. Storm Veil is worth the wait. Final Boss describes Wind as the element that launches and destabilizes enemies, which is ideal for breaking up groups and creating space in crowded fights.

How Imbue Element Works

Learning an element does nothing to your normal attacks on its own. GameRiv explains that Imbue Element appears in the skill tree once any character learns at least one elemental skill, and you upgrade it to unlock elemental versions of specific moves. For Kliff, those are Elemental Turning Slash, Elemental Charged Shot, Elemental Force Palm and Elemental Meteor Kick. Damiane's list is Elemental Smiting Strike, Elemental Charged Shot, Elemental Shield Toss and Elemental Meteor Kick. Oongka has his own set.

To pick which element is active, Final Boss says you use the radial menu, the same wheel used for food and consumables, and compatible attacks stay imbued until you switch or the effect ends. Patch 1.04.00 added a "Using Skill: Element" option: choosing the Quick Slot Option lets you assign elements to individual inputs instead of cycling through the wheel. The same patch made your selected element persist when you retry a boss after dying, so you are not resetting your setup every attempt.

The Enhanced update changed how you pay for all of this. Patch 2.00.00 added Abyss Links as a new skill-learning resource: when one character spends Abyss Artifacts on a skill, the other playable characters receive an equivalent number of Abyss Links. Skill resets now work per character and refund that character's Abyss Links. The update also reset every player's skill progression once, with all spent resources refunded, so returning players need to rebuild their Imbue Element investment.

What Each Element Does in Combat

Final Boss summarizes the four elements by role, which is a useful way to decide what to slot for a fight:

  • Flame applies burn pressure, steady damage over time that rewards long engagements.
  • Frost leans defensive: Frost Mantle spends Spirit for a protective window and releases ice when it ends.
  • Lightning creates shock fields and stun pressure, strongest against clustered enemies.
  • Wind launches and destabilizes targets, breaking formations and creating space.

Pearl Abyss has also tuned the system since launch. Patch 1.01.00 added weak point indicator effects for each element, so you can see when an enemy is vulnerable to what you are using. Patch 1.02.00 added an Escape key prompt when you are hit by an elemental status effect, and patch 1.04.00 increased the damage taken from elemental status ailments, which makes resistance on your gear matter more. Our Crimson Desert best armor guide covers the sets with fire, ice and lightning resistance.

Elements also interact with your weapon choice, since the imbued moves are tied to specific attacks such as Turning Slash, Charged Shot and Force Palm. Our guide to the best weapons in Crimson Desert breaks down which weapon types suit which play style, so you can pair an element with the attacks you actually use most.

A Sensible Order to Unlock Them

GameRiv suggests Ice, then Fire, then Lightning, then Wind, while noting that this is not the only order the game allows. That order makes sense for most players for three reasons: the Frost route is reachable early, Flame sits on the same chain so you can grab it on the same trip, and Lightning and Wind are both held behind story keys you will get naturally.

A practical plan looks like this. Clear the Spire of Ringing Truth chain as soon as you can beat Priscus the Ancient. Pick up Lightning right after Chapter 4 hands you the Spire of the Stars key. Then save Wind for after Chapter 8. Our chapter-by-chapter story list shows where Chapters 4 and 8 fall, so you can plan the detours. Restoring Abysses also counts toward the Abyss challenges, and completing all 40 earns the Conqueror of the Abysses gold trophy, so these trips feed the list covered in our Crimson Desert trophies breakdown.

Skipping the Abyss Puzzles

If the Spire and Abyss chains are the part of the game you enjoy least, or you want every element available early, the store's Crimson Desert All 4 Elements Unlock + Full Skill Tree service unlocks Wind, Flame, Frost and Lightning and levels the full skill tree, including Imbue Element at 4/4. It works on PS5, Xbox and PC, can be done at any level or chapter, and is applied directly to your account while your progress stays as it is. The page notes you will be able to imbue all elements in game, even in the early game, and you must already own Crimson Desert.

Other unlocks and services are listed on the Crimson Desert services hub.
