Crimson Desert Best Armor: Top Sets for Each Character

Crimson Desert YouTube thumbnail: Crimson Desert - Best New OP Legendary Armor Set & Weapon - Plate of Void & 21 Weapons Gear Guide!

The best armor in Crimson Desert for Kliff is the Frostcursed set, which Game8 rates as strong from the early game through the endgame, with the Blackwing set as the standout mid-game pick and Scorchflame for fire-heavy areas. Damiane's top defensive set is Light of the Battlefield, and Oongka's is Valortread. Because the game has no set bonuses, the real goal is the best piece per slot, refined toward +10 and fitted with the right Abyss Gear. This guide covers the sets, where to find them, and how refinement changes the picture.

We checked this against Game8's best armor list, GamingBolt's armor set locations, BrokenBuilds' armor and refinement guide, and Pearl Abyss's official patch notes through the Charting the Unknown update in November 2026.

How Armor Works in Crimson Desert

Start with the rule that changes every armor decision: there are no set bonuses. GamingBolt and BrokenBuilds both confirm that wearing a matching set gives nothing extra, so each piece only contributes its own defense and secondary stats. That frees you to mix pieces from different sets, and it is why "best set" lists are really lists of strong individual pieces that happen to share a name.

Each character wears a helm, a chest piece, gloves, boots and a cloak. Gloves and boots carry attack as well as defense, cloaks often carry elemental resistance, and some pieces add movement speed, critical rate or immunities such as Daze Immunity. Abyss Gear adds a second layer. BrokenBuilds explains that each armor piece can hold up to five sockets, which accept defensive cores only, such as the Aegis, Fortification, Vitality, Flameward, Frostward and Shockward families. Offensive cores belong on weapons. Creating a socket costs Silver at Sylvia or Elowen, while installing and removing cores is free.

Plate, leather and cloth also scale differently. BrokenBuilds lists a fully refined plate chest at 41 defense, leather at 32 and cloth at 21, so plate chests are the defensive ceiling outside areas where a specific resistance matters more.

Frostcursed: The Standout Set for Kliff

GamingBolt describes Frostcursed as the plate set once worn by the Skull Knight, the Frostwarden, and Game8 lists it as strong from early game to endgame. Its chest piece carries 14 base defense, Level 2 movement speed and Level 7 Ice Resistance, the helm grants Daze Immunity, and several pieces arrive with Abyss Gear already slotted. Every piece sits in a chest somewhere in northern Demeniss or near Deadfire Mountain, so you can collect the set in one trip:

  • Plate Helm: in the southern of the two Chattering Rocks Ancient Ruins in northwestern Demeniss, in a room behind vines in the structure with the ladder.
  • Plate Armor: in Misthard Cave north of Deadfire Mountain. Head due north of the "D" in Deadfire, cross the water to the waterfalls and break the destructible wall.
  • Plate Cloak: in the Sanctum of Expiation in northwestern Demeniss.
  • Plate Gloves: in Lunar Spirit Grotto on the Denn River in northern Demeniss. Stab the waterfall to enter.
  • Plate Boots: in the Well of Tragedy cave on the Denn River. Stab the waterfall to enter.

Patch 1.13.00 also added crafting recipes for the Frostcursed Plate Armor, along with the Lightning Bolt Plate Armor and Scorchflame Plate Armor, so if you missed a chest or want a second copy for refinement, crafting is now an option.

Other Strong Kliff Options

Frostcursed is not the only route. Three other sets earn their place depending on where you are in the game and what you are fighting.

  • Blackwing. The Crowcaller's leather and plate set. The Mask and Leather Armor are rewards for defeating the Crowcaller in Chapter 5; the Cloak sits in a shed at the farm in Pororin Village after "The Unreachable Village" quest; the Gloves are in the Sanctum of Penitence; and the Boots are in a secret room at the House of Healing. Game8 recommends it for early lightning resistance and unarmed builds, and its pieces come loaded with Haste, Vigor and Vitality Abyss Gear.
  • Scorchflame. Game8's fire resistance pick, with a chest carrying Level 7 Fire Resistance. Game8 notes the full set cannot be gathered through exploration alone, and suggests Armor of the Shadows as an alternative source of fire resistance.
  • Canta. The early buy. Game8 lists the full set at Rhett, the weapons vendor next to the Smithy in Hernand Town, and the helm grants Tinnitus Immunity.

Kliff and Oongka can also wear Kuku equipment since patch 1.13.00, including the Kuku Lightning-Resistant, Flame-Resistant and Ice-Resistant Armor, which is useful when a single damage type dominates a fight. The same patch added 39 new pieces for Kliff and Oongka, including boss outfits such as the Tarandus the Ashen, Unyielding Hero and Knight of Carnage sets, obtained through quests, achievements, shops and other sources.

Best Armor for Damiane and Oongka

Damiane and Oongka have their own armor pools, and Game8 picks out a few clear winners:

  • Damiane, Light of the Battlefield. Her highest-defense set, with Fortification, Aegis and Vitality Abyss Gear already slotted.
  • Damiane, Official Knight's. An offensive option suited to unarmed builds, with stamina-focused Abyss Gear.
  • Damiane, Elegant Carmine. Easy to get: craft it at the Smithy after collecting blueprints found across Delesyia and the Crimson Desert region.
  • Damiane, White Bloodwind. Lightning and ice resistance, but Game8 calls it difficult to obtain, since it requires 100 Trust with several NPCs including Olanelle at the Demeniss Tailor's Shop.
  • Oongka, Valortread. His strongest defensive set, paired with defensive Abyss Gear such as Gourmet, Aegis and Fortification.
  • Oongka, Ashad. Built around stamina regeneration, with gloves whose Abyss Gear improves grappling attacks.

Their options grew over the summer. Patch 1.13.00 let Oongka equip most outfits available to Kliff and gave Damiane access to boss sets including the guardian of Odeck and Dark Marksman outfits, plus eight new armor pieces of her own. BrokenBuilds also names the Solas, Ashad and Belkandor plate sets as Oongka's maximum-defense options.

Refinement: Where Your Defense Really Comes From

Base stats matter less than refinement. BrokenBuilds explains that armor refines from +0 to +10 at a blacksmith, with levels 1 to 4 using standard materials such as Iron Ore, Copper Ore and Thin Hide, and levels 5 to 10 also requiring Abyss Artifacts. Each step adds roughly 2 to 3 defense, and the final step is the largest. Game8 adds that refining costs materials rather than currency, and that your first blacksmith is Turnali in Hernand.

Several patches made refinement less painful:

  • Patch 1.01.00 added Refinement Tokens, which temper equipment up to Stage 4 without materials and come from certain main and faction quests.
  • Patch 1.06.00 added Extraction, which recovers the materials spent on refinement by rolling an item back toward its base level without destroying it, and limited refining with duplicate items to the levels before Abyss Artifacts are required.
  • Patch 1.08.00 added instant refinement using a selected method, so you no longer pick materials by hand each time.

A sensible order for spending: take the chest piece first, since a plate chest has the highest ceiling of any slot at 41 defense, then gloves and boots, which add attack as well as defense, and leave the helm and cloak for last unless you need a cloak's resistance. Use any Refinement Tokens from quests on pieces you plan to keep, because they cover the cheap early stages for free.

Extraction is the reason to refine freely: if a better chest drops later, you can pull your materials back out of the old one. Abyss Artifacts are also the currency for skills, so balance armor refinement against your skill tree, especially the elemental skills covered in our Crimson Desert elemental powers guide.

Resistances, Diving Gear and When to Swap

Resistances matter more than they did at launch. Patch 1.04.00 increased the damage taken from elemental status ailments, and patch 1.06.00 adjusted the elemental resistances of certain cloaks. Keep a resistance chest or cloak in your inventory for frost, fire and lightning heavy areas rather than relying on one set everywhere. The Frostcursed set's ice resistance and the Blackwing pieces' lightning resistance both justify carrying a spare.

Charting the Unknown added a new kind of armor decision. Diving uses a breath gauge, and refining your diving suit raises the maximum breath capacity, so a diving set becomes a second outfit you swap into for underwater exploration. Pre-order customers received the Charter's Diving Set for Kliff and Oongka and the Charter's Light Diving Set for Damiane. Our Crimson Desert DLC guide covers how to start the ocean content.

Armor is only half of a build. Our guide to the best weapons in Crimson Desert covers the weapon side, and our chapter list shows when bosses like the Crowcaller arrive.

Already Like Your Look? Max It Instead

Refining a favorite piece to +10 takes a lot of ore, hide and Abyss Artifacts. If you already like your armor and simply want the numbers, the store's Crimson Desert Any Armor Maxed service brings one armor piece or set line to max, including the upgrades and defensive nodes in that max path. You name the exact in-game armor in the checkout notes, the team confirms before logging in, and the session completes the max-out; ambiguous names may need a screenshot.

The page suggests pairing it with the weapon equivalent for a full combat tune-up, and the rest of the options are on the Crimson Desert services hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best armor set in Crimson Desert?

For Kliff, Frostcursed is the most commonly recommended set from early game to endgame. Damiane's top defensive set is Light of the Battlefield and Oongka's is Valortread.

Do armor sets give set bonuses?

No. Matching pieces give no extra bonus, so pick the best piece for each slot.

Where is the Frostcursed armor?

In chests across northern Demeniss: Chattering Rocks Ancient Ruins (helm), Misthard Cave (chest), Sanctum of Expiation (cloak), Lunar Spirit Grotto (gloves) and Well of Tragedy (boots).

What is the max armor refinement level?

+10. Levels 5 to 10 require Abyss Artifacts on top of standard materials, and Extraction lets you recover those materials later.

How do you add sockets to armor?

Visit Sylvia or Elowen to create sockets for Silver. Armor sockets accept defensive Abyss cores only, and installing or removing cores is free.

Can Oongka wear Kliff's armor?

Mostly, yes. Patch 1.13.00 let Oongka equip most outfits available to Kliff, including Kuku equipment.
