How to Use a Permanent Unlock Token in MW4 (2026)

To use a Permanent Unlock token in MW4, open Career, choose Progression, go to Multiplayer Level Unlocks, highlight the item you want to keep and press the Permanent Unlock button shown on screen, then confirm. You only get tokens by choosing the Classic Prestige path when you Prestige, and a spent token cannot be refunded or moved, so it pays to pick carefully.

We checked the rules against Infinity Ward's official Progression and Prestige post (October 19, 2026), the Create-a-Class unlock tables, the launch patch notes, and the GamerBlurb and esports.gg token guides, in November 2026.

Where Permanent Unlock Tokens Come From

Modern Warfare 4 has 10 Prestige levels followed by 1,000 Prestige Master levels, and for the first time in the series you choose between two Prestige paths each time you Prestige. When you finish Level 55, the game asks you to pick Classic or Regular, and it asks again every time you enter a new Prestige level.

  • Classic Prestige resets your level unlocks and Create-a-Class progress. In exchange you get a 20% XP boost, one Permanent Unlock token and bonus cosmetic rewards, such as the "Prime" versions of the Prestige Blueprints and skins.
  • Regular Prestige restarts you at Level 1 but keeps every level unlock and your Create-a-Class content. No token is awarded, because nothing was taken away.

So if you never see a token, the most likely reason is that you have only ever picked Regular. Each Classic Prestige grants one token, and with ten Prestige levels that means up to ten tokens if you choose Classic every single time. Most of the Prestige rewards are shared between both paths; the Classic path just adds extras. Our older MW4 Prestige guide compares the two tracks in more depth.

How to Spend a Token, Step by Step

The token is not applied automatically, and it does not appear in Create-a-Class or Gunsmith. GamerBlurb's walkthrough and the official Career menu layout give this sequence:

  1. From the main menu, open Career.
  2. Select Progression.
  3. Choose Multiplayer Level Unlocks, the Level 1 to 55 track.
  4. Scroll to the weapon, perk, equipment, Field Upgrade or Killstreak you want to keep.
  5. Highlight it and press the Permanent Unlock button prompt at the bottom of the screen.
  6. Confirm. The item stays available through every future Classic Prestige reset.

Two things to know before you confirm. The choice is final: there is no refund and no way to move the token to something else later. And if you are trying to do this while matchmaking, wait; Infinity Ward's launch notes say both Weapon Prestige and Player Prestige are unavailable while you are actively searching for a match, so do your Prestige housekeeping from an idle menu.

What Activision Recommends Spending It On

The official progression post includes a direct tip: when choosing what to spend a token on, prioritize Perks, Field Upgrades, Killstreaks and Equipment over Weapons. The reason is Blueprints. Whenever you get a Weapon Blueprint from the Store or a Battle Pass, the base version of that weapon becomes permanently available for your whole leveling journey, which makes a token on that weapon redundant.

That tip matters more in Season 1 than it did at launch, because the free and premium Battle Pass tracks hand out Blueprints for some late-unlock guns. The Axion assault rifle normally unlocks at Level 52 and the Cronen Squall at Level 55, the last level before Prestige. The Season 1 pass includes an Axion "Prime Echo" Blueprint at Tier 29 and a Cronen Squall "Marked Ops" Blueprint at Tier 83. Once you hold either Blueprint, spending a token on that gun is wasted, so check which tiers you can realistically reach this season before you decide. Our Battle Pass breakdown lists the other Blueprint tiers worth checking before you commit.

The Best Candidates by Unlock Level

The value of a token is the number of levels it saves you every Prestige. These are the late unlocks from Infinity Ward's own Create-a-Class tables, grouped by type:

  • Tacticals: Stim (Level 47), Screamer Mine (53), Decoy Grenade (42).
  • Lethals: Throwing Knife (49), C4 (43), Claymore (37).
  • Field Upgrades: Tactical Insertion (45), Razor Wire Trap (41), Recon Drone (33).
  • Perks: Kill Chain (48), Birdseye (40), Cold-Blooded (36), Tracker (32), Ninja (30), Ghost (24).
  • Killstreaks: Air Lockdown (55), Gunship (51), Argonaut (45), Advanced UAV (40), Railgun Sentry (38), Deathstalker (35).
  • Weapons without a Blueprint: PM-40 Anvil launcher (54), Signal 50 sniper (50), X-58 Nyx SMG (46), APOC-338 LMG (44).

One small inconsistency is worth flagging: the Create-a-Class table lists the Throwing Knife at Level 49, while the example in the progression post says you would need to reach Level 48 again to re-unlock it. Either way, it is one of the last Lethals you get back.

esports.gg's ranked list puts the Stim first, then the Axion, Ninja, Cronen Squall and Gunship, and it adds a caveat that an Axion Blueprint from the Monster Energy promotion also removes the need for a token. Ninja is an interesting pick despite unlocking at only Level 30: if quiet footsteps are core to how you play, every Classic Prestige otherwise spends the first half of the climb without it. For which streaks are worth locking in, see our MW4 killstreaks guide.

A Simple Way to Decide

If you are torn, run through three questions for each candidate:

  1. Do I already own it permanently? Check your Blueprints first. A Store, Battle Pass or promotion Blueprint means the base weapon is already covered.
  2. Is it in most of my classes? A perk or tactical you run on every loadout saves you more than a gun you use on two maps.
  3. How late is it? A Level 53 item saves 52 levels each Prestige; a Level 24 item saves far fewer, so it needs to matter a lot to be worth it.

Think about the camo grind as well. If you are pushing a weapon class toward Gold or Platinum, keeping its supporting perks and equipment available from Level 1 means fewer awkward early loadouts while you grind challenges such as longshots; our longshot distance guide shows which classes need the most range. And if your favorite setup only works in certain playlists, our MW4 game modes guide can help you match the token to how you actually play.

Is Classic Worth the Reset?

The token only exists because Classic takes something away, so the real decision is whether the trade suits you. Classic makes sense if you enjoy rebuilding loadouts, want the 20% XP boost for the next climb, and care about the Prime cosmetics. At Prestige 1, for instance, both tracks earn a Mosin-Nagant Blueprint at Level 50, but Regular players get "The Vet" while Classic players get "The Vet Prime." Every Prestige level follows the same pattern, with a reward every ten levels inspired by a different Infinity Ward game, from Call of Duty (2003) at Prestige 1 to Modern Warfare 4 itself at Prestige 10.

Regular makes sense if you just want to keep playing your current classes while the Prestige number climbs, or if you are deep in a camo grind and cannot afford to lose access to a weapon for forty levels. Because the game lets you pick again at every Prestige, you can mix them: Classic early to bank tokens on your must-have perks and gear, then Regular later once your core loadout is fully locked in. That hybrid route gives you the tokens that matter without resetting your classes all the way to Prestige 10.

When the Token Seems Missing or Broken

A few situations explain most reports of a token that "does not work":

  • You chose Regular Prestige. Only the Classic path awards a token.
  • You are looking in the wrong menu. The prompt appears on items inside Career, Progression, Multiplayer Level Unlocks, not in Create-a-Class.
  • The item is already available. Items you have not lost, such as base weapons covered by a Blueprint, do not need a token.
  • You are in matchmaking. Back out of the search and try again from the menu.

Infinity Ward has also been fixing Prestige issues since launch. The October 25 update changed the Prestige reset process so Loadouts are properly cleared when you Prestige, and the October 24 update fixed weapon attachments not resetting on Weapon Prestige. If something still looks wrong after a restart, check the latest patch notes before assuming the token is lost. Note that Weapon Prestige is a separate system: it relocks a single weapon's attachments in exchange for exclusive camos and has nothing to do with Player Prestige tokens.

Skipping the Weapon Level Climb

Tokens save you Player Levels, but each Classic Prestige still leaves the weapon side of the grind untouched. The store's MW4 max weapon level boost levels the weapons you choose to their base max level, which also unlocks some of the Military Camos along the way. You can pick every weapon on the list or tick only custom weapons, priced per weapon, and camo grinds such as Gold, Platinum and the mastery camos are not part of it.

The work is done by hand on your own account after checkout, so you share your login once you have picked your platform (PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC or Switch 2). For a Prestige climb itself, or camo services beyond max level, the Modern Warfare 4 hub lists the related options.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you get a Permanent Unlock token in MW4?

Reach Level 55 and choose Classic Prestige when you enter the next Prestige level. Each Classic Prestige grants one token; Regular Prestige grants none.

Where is the Permanent Unlock button?

In Career, Progression, Multiplayer Level Unlocks. Highlight an item and the Permanent Unlock prompt appears at the bottom of the screen.

Can you undo a Permanent Unlock?

No. Tokens cannot be refunded and the unlock cannot be moved to a different item afterward.

How many Permanent Unlock tokens can you get?

One per Classic Prestige. With ten Prestige levels, choosing Classic every time gives up to ten.

Should I use a token on a weapon?

Only if you have no Blueprint for it. Activision recommends prioritizing Perks, Field Upgrades, Killstreaks and Equipment, since any Blueprint makes the base weapon permanently available.

Does Regular Prestige keep my unlocks?

Yes. Regular Prestige resets you to Level 1 but keeps all level unlocks and Create-a-Class content, which is why it does not give a token.
