MW4 Infected and Every Game Mode Explained (2026)

Modern Warfare 4 YouTube thumbnail: MW4 INFECTED UPDATE is too much fun

Infected came to MW4 on October 30, 2026 as a Halloween party mode: one random player starts as the Infected, every Survivor they kill joins the horde, and the Survivors win by lasting until time runs out. It sits alongside more than a dozen other Multiplayer modes, from the new Inflation, Hijack and Collateral to the classic respawn playlists, and Season 1 added Grind and Drop Zone on November 6.

We checked the rules and loadouts against Infinity Ward's Maps and Modes post (October 21), the Season 1 announcement (October 28), the launch and Season 1 patch notes and Infinity Ward's own announcement post for Infected, in November 2026.

How Infected Works in MW4

Infinity Ward's description is short: "It's Survivors vs. the Infected in this team-based party mode where one player is randomly assigned to the Infected team at the start of the match." Every time an Infected player eliminates a Survivor, that Survivor switches sides. If you are Infected, your job is to grow the horde; if you are a Survivor, hold out as long as you can. The match ends when everyone has been infected or when the Survivors outlast the clock.

The two sides have fixed loadouts, and they are very different:

  • Infected: the FSS Carbon Edge combat knife, a Throwing Knife and the Ninja perk, which makes footsteps quieter with significantly reduced range. The kit is built for speed and stealth.
  • Survivors: the Rezi 12 shotgun hot-loaded with explosive slugs through its Enforcer Apex Attachment, plus a Trip Wire and a Concussion Grenade.

Infinity Ward announced the mode's arrival on October 30 with a post that read "Infected joins the playlist for Halloween weekend!" following the Possession launch the day before. The Season 1 patch notes list Grind, Drop Zone, 6v6 Kill Block and Gauntlet 1v1 as the new modes and do not mention Infected, so whether it stays in rotation is up to the playlist schedule. Check the Party or Featured section of the Multiplayer menu for the current lineup.

Tips for Both Sides of Infected

These are practical suggestions built from the official loadouts rather than anything Infinity Ward has published.

As a Survivor, your Trip Wire is your best friend. Infinity Ward describes it as a thrown explosive trap that deploys a detonation wire on landing, and several can link into a connected network. Wire the doorway or stairwell you are defending and the Infected, who only have knives, have to cross it to reach you. The Concussion Grenade disorients enemies, slowing their reactions and blurring their vision, which buys time for the Rezi 12. Explosive slugs hit hard but the Rezi is still a shotgun, so hold tight angles where the Infected must come close in a straight line, and stay with other Survivors so you cover each other's backs.

As the Infected, the Ninja perk is doing quiet work for you. Rushing straight into a group of shotguns rarely works; flanking from an unexpected direction does. Use the Throwing Knife for the Survivor who peeks too far out of cover, and coordinate with the growing horde so several Infected arrive from different sides at once. The longer a match runs, the more Infected there are, so early patience costs you little. Infected has no killstreaks to worry about, but the moment you head back to core playlists they return; our killstreaks guide covers what you will face there.

Possession and the Other Party Modes

Possession, a brand-new mode, arrived a day before Infected, on October 29, for the Halloween season. Infinity Ward calls it a "fast, visceral party mode moshpit." When you eliminate an enemy, you possess them: you transmigrate to their location and take their loadout. That opens strange tactics, such as killing an enemy near a Hardpoint to teleport onto it, or using kills to clear a Search and Destroy bomb site. The catch is that you always possess whoever you eliminate, so a kill in a bad spot can drop you somewhere worse.

The permanent party option is Gun Game: eliminate players to advance to the next weapon, and the first player to score an elimination with each weapon wins. Matches run 10 minutes with a score limit of 15, and the party size is one, so it is every player for themselves. MW4 also ships Proving Grounds, a training course with movement tutorials and timed courses you can try for an S Rating, which is a good warm-up before any party mode.

Core Respawn Modes

MW4 launched with more than a dozen Multiplayer modes, many in both Core and Hardcore versions. Hardcore uses a limited HUD, friendly fire and reduced health with no regeneration. Two respawn modes are new to MW4:

  • Inflation: eliminate enemies and collect their cash. The more you carry, the bigger the target on your back; players who reach the High Value Target threshold are revealed to both teams. An Overtime in the final minutes raises cash multipliers, and the team with the most cash wins.
  • Hijack: fight over a single Data Spike that you can carry, throw or pass toward the enemy Comm Station. Plant it to score over time, and defend the upload to earn the full bonus. Teams swap sides between rounds.

The classics are all there too: Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint, Kill Confirmed, Free-For-All and Frontline, where you always spawn from your base and kills outside it count for more. Here are the official limits from Infinity Ward's launch post:

MW4 respawn modes at launch (official Maps and Modes post, October 21, 2026)
ModeMatch timeScore limit
Inflation10 minutesN/A (most cash wins)
Hijack4 minutes per round300
Frontline10 minutes100
Team Deathmatch10 minutes100
DominationUnlimited200
Hardpoint5 minutes250
Kill Confirmed10 minutes75
Free-For-All10 minutes30

Infinity Ward is still tuning these playlists. The November 2 update switched Free-For-All to show the Final Killcam instead of Best Play, said voice chat outside parties is coming to that mode in a future update, adjusted Shipment spawns, and fixed a Cash Mastery challenge that was not tracking in Inflation. Earlier updates improved Hijack spawn locations and respawn timing and fixed the announcer intro for Frontline and Hijack. If a mode felt off during launch week, it is worth another try now. As a rule of thumb, objective modes like Domination, Hardpoint and Hijack suit players who want steady XP and streaks from the Smart Streak meter, while Team Deathmatch, Kill Confirmed and Free-For-All reward raw gunplay.

Round-Based, Ground War and Kill Block

Collateral is the third new mode, and it is the most different. It combines Search and Destroy with a Buy Phase: you start each match with a pistol and $800, earn cash from objectives and eliminations, and spend it between rounds. There are no respawns and no custom loadouts; die and you lose your gear but keep your cash. The buy menu covers armor and perks (including Ghost and Fast Hands), equipment, pistols, two weapon tiers and a team-funded UAV, and the first team to six rounds wins. Infinity Ward raised the XP for a kill in Search and Destroy and Collateral from 100 to 300 on October 25.

Search and Destroy and Gunfight round out the tactical side. Gunfight gives every player the same loadout, which changes every two rounds, with 50-second rounds and an Overtime flag; it runs in 2v2 on four small maps and in 3v3 and 10v10 on Kill Block, the modular map with more than 500 layout combinations. Ground War's new Combat Outpost reimagines Domination at 32v32 with captured Outposts that become spawn points and can be reinforced for rewards from a local UAV up to a Light Tank. Big maps like these are also where longshots are easiest, as our longshot distance guide explains, and every map is covered in our older MW4 maps overview.

What Season 1 Added

Season 1, live since November 6, brought back two modes. Grind has you collecting dog tags and banking them at one of two Banks; you can carry many at once but drop them all on death. Drop Zone has teams fighting over a single rotating objective while airdrops deliver random killstreak packages into it. Kill Block also opens up to 6v6 modes, starting with the static Crash combo, and Gauntlet 1v1 is a winner-stays-on Gunfight duel tied to the Wager Match event.

Infinity Ward has promised more at mid-season: Counter Attack, where teams try to detonate bombs at the enemy Comm Station while protecting their own, and a new twist on Team Deathmatch. The full list of Season 1 maps, weapons and DMZ changes is in our Season 1 guide. DMZ is a separate experience altogether, and Season 1 put Ghost in charge of its new X01 operations; our Ghost skin guide covers how to play as him.

Climbing Prestige Without the Repetition

Party modes like Infected and Possession are fun, but they are rarely where serious leveling happens, and the MW4 Prestige track is long: 55 levels for each of ten Prestiges. The store's MW4 Prestige boost takes an account from its current Prestige to the one you choose, up to Prestige 10, completing Levels 1 to 55 for each Prestige in the order and unlocking the Prestige rewards along the way.

You pick Classic or Regular Prestige on the form, and that path is used for every Prestige in the order; if you have not Prestiged yet, you select 0. It is completed by hand in standard matches on your own account after you share your login, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC or Switch 2, with completion time depending on how many Prestiges you order. The Modern Warfare 4 store hub has the other options, such as camos and weapon levels.
