MW4 Longshot Distance for Every Weapon Class (2026)

The commonly cited MW4 longshot distance is 30 meters for SMGs, 38 meters for assault rifles, LMGs and marksman rifles, 51 meters for sniper rifles, 20 meters for pistols and 12 meters for shotguns. Those figures are player-measured, published by Dot Esports on October 26, 2026; Infinity Ward has not posted official numbers, and its October 28 update lowered the minimum range for longshot tracking, so today's real thresholds may be slightly shorter.

We checked this against the official MW4 launch patch notes, Infinity Ward's progression and Season 1 blog posts, Dot Esports and esports.gg, as of November 6, 2026.

Longshot Distance by Weapon Class

A longshot is a kill landed beyond a minimum distance, and in Modern Warfare 4 that minimum depends on the class of weapon you are holding, not on the individual gun or its attachments. Here are the figures most players are working from:

MW4 longshot distances by weapon class (community-measured, Dot Esports, October 26, 2026)
Weapon classLongshot distance
Shotguns12 meters
Pistols20 meters
SMGs30 meters
Assault rifles38 meters
LMGs38 meters
Marksman rifles38 meters
Sniper rifles51 meters

Two points about this table matter more than the numbers themselves. First, they are not official: Activision's progression post names longshots as a type of Special Camo challenge but never gives a distance, and esports.gg's own guide (November 5) says the exact distances for every class "haven't been tested yet." Second, the game changed after these numbers were published, which is covered in the next section.

The ranking is consistent across sources even where exact figures are not: close-range classes need far less distance than rifles. That is why an SMG at 30 meters, or a shotgun at 12, is often a quicker longshot grind than a sniper, even though snipers feel like the natural tool for the job.

The October 28 Change You Need to Know

Infinity Ward's patch notes for October 28, 2026 include two lines that directly affect this challenge: "Decreased the minimum range cutoff for Longshot Challenge tracking" and "Increased the maximum range cutoff for Point Blank Challenge tracking." Both changes make these challenges easier to complete. The notes do not say what the new numbers are.

The timing is the important part. Dot Esports published its table two days before that update, so if the cutoffs were lowered across the board, the figures above are now slightly higher than what the game actually requires. In practice that means two things:

  • If you clear the distances in the table, your kill should count. Treat them as reliable targets rather than exact thresholds.
  • If a kill a few meters short of the table value counts for you, that is consistent with the patch, not a fluke.

Earlier, on launch day, Infinity Ward also fixed a DMZ challenge that wrongly asked for longshot kills when it should have asked for headshots, and several inaccurate camo requirements. If you remember a strange longshot requirement from the first days, check the challenge card again.

Where Longshots Show Up in Your Challenges

Longshot kills appear in several progression systems, and knowing which ones you are chasing tells you how many you need:

  • Special Camos: each weapon has three Special Camos with combat-specific challenges, and Activision lists longshots among them alongside double kills, mounted kills and headshots. The required count changes by mode, and DMZ asks for more because AI enemies count there.
  • Operator unlock: Valen, from Valeria's Strike Cell, unlocks in Multiplayer after 20 Operator longshot kills.
  • BlackCell camo track: in Season 1, the LMG "Whirlpool" camo for BlackCell owners asks for 30 longshot kills in Multiplayer with any LMG.

The Special Camo case is the one most players hit, because those three camos stand between you and Gold. Activision's progression rules are strict about order: all eight Military Camos and all three Special Camos on a weapon unlock its Gold challenge, and Platinum opens only after every Gold challenge in that weapon class is done. A single stubborn longshot challenge can hold up an entire class. Our older camo challenges list walks through that chain tier by tier.

Calibrate Your Eye in the Firing Range

The hardest part of longshots is judging distance in a live match, since the game does not show a range readout on kills. The Multiplayer Firing Range solves that. Activision lists practice dummies at 10, 25, 50 and 100 meters, plus a moving target and a stats panel with accuracy, damage and time to kill.

Spend five minutes there with the weapon you are grinding. Stand at the 25 and 50 meter dummies and memorize how big a target looks through your chosen optic at each. For SMGs, the 30 meter mark sits just past the 25 meter dummy; for assault rifles and LMGs, 38 meters falls between the 25 and 50 meter targets, a bit closer to the far one; for snipers, the 50 meter dummy is almost exactly the threshold. Once that picture is in your head, you will stop wasting kills that fall a few meters short. If you play on controller, how your aim behaves at range also matters, since aim assist helps most up close; our guide to MW4 aim assist explains the trade-off.

Best Maps, Modes and Sightlines

Dot Esports and esports.gg both point to bigger spaces. Ground War is the strongest playlist because its 32v32 maps are built for range: Imjin Farmland's open fields and waterways, the dense streets and rooftops around Wolves Stadium, and the wooded hill of Forest. Hardpoint and Domination are the best 6v6 options because players funnel toward predictable objectives.

  • Coal: esports.gg calls it the largest 6v6 map and suggests watching the central train track windows from the back.
  • Silkworm: hold the main street from behind a car, or the back diner near the Domination C flag.
  • Reactor U92: watch down the train tracks through the central warehouse.
  • Transit 213: look toward the back doorway near the Domination C flag.
  • Rooftops: use the scaffolding side of the map.
  • Season 1 additions: Activision describes Backstab's streets as a place where "long-ranged sightlines reign," and Canyon as wide open space broken up by rock walls, with a central Mesa overlooking both ends.

Hardcore helps too, because its reduced health with no regeneration lets you finish targets at range before they reach cover. For a full list of where each playlist and party mode stands after Season 1, see our MW4 game modes guide.

Loadout Setup for Range

Attachments do not change the distance requirement, and the kill does not need to be a headshot, so the goal is simply a weapon you can keep on target at range. Dot Esports suggests a 3x or 4x optic on maps with long sightlines, a longer barrel for range and bullet velocity, recoil-control attachments and a larger magazine, while skipping builds focused only on ADS speed or hipfire.

A Tactical Insertion (unlocked at Player Level 45) is worth a Field Upgrade slot in Ground War, because it puts you straight back on your favorite lane after a death. If your build relies on a late unlock, a Classic Prestige token can keep it available after a reset; our Permanent Unlock token guide explains how. Streaks matter less for this grind, but a UAV from our killstreaks guide shows you which lanes enemies are crossing.

Mistakes That Waste Longshot Kills

Most failed longshot sessions come down to a handful of habits rather than bad aim:

  • Finishing with the wrong weapon. Weapon camo challenges track kills with the gun the camo belongs to. If you soften a target with your rifle and finish them with a pistol or a grenade, that kill does nothing for the rifle's challenge.
  • Grinding the wrong mode for the count you need. Activision's progression post shows Multiplayer counts are usually lower than DMZ counts for the same camo, because AI enemies count in DMZ. For a longshot challenge that is the difference between a few good sessions and many.
  • Using Overkill without thinking. The Overkill perk lets you carry two primaries. It is handy for running a rifle for range and an SMG for close fights, but only the kills made with the weapon you are grinding progress it.
  • Chasing distance on small maps. Shipment and other tight layouts rarely produce 38 meter sightlines. Save them for Point Blank challenges and move longshot sessions to Ground War or the larger 6v6 maps.
  • Ignoring the challenge card. Counts differ per weapon and per mode, and Infinity Ward has already corrected some wrong requirements since launch. The card in the Career menu is the final word.

Handing Off the Platinum Grind

Longshot challenges are a common place for the camo grind to stall, especially on the classes where 38 or 51 meters is hard to find in 6v6. The store's MW4 Platinum camo service covers the whole route for the weapon categories you choose: max level, all Military Camos, all Special Camos (where most longshot challenges live), Gold and Platinum. Each category is priced separately, Harmonic Break, Divergence and the mastery camos are not included, and a player completes the order by hand on your account after you share your login, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC or Switch 2.

If you want to go past Platinum, or would rather start with something smaller such as weapon levels or a Prestige boost, the Modern Warfare 4 store hub lists the other options. Our older Platinum camo guide explains the per-class Platinum challenges if you are finishing it yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the longshot distance for snipers in MW4?

Players measured 51 meters before the October 28 update. Infinity Ward lowered the minimum longshot range in that patch without giving a number, so 51 meters is now a reliable target rather than an exact cutoff.

Do longshots need to be headshots?

No. Any killing shot from beyond the distance counts, according to Dot Esports' testing.

Do attachments change longshot range?

They do not change the requirement, which is set by weapon class. Barrels and optics just make it easier to land kills at that range.

Why did my long-range kill not count as a longshot?

Most likely you were just short of your class's distance. Check the gap in the Firing Range using the 25 and 50 meter dummies, then hold lanes a little longer.

Do longshots count in DMZ?

Camo challenges are shared across modes, and completing one in any mode unlocks the camo everywhere, but Activision says DMZ versions usually require higher kill counts.

What is the easiest class for longshot kills?

SMGs and shotguns need the least distance (30 and 12 meters on the community figures), so they are usually quicker than assault rifles or snipers.
