MW4 Camo Challenges List: Every Tier Explained

Modern Warfare 4 camo tier pyramid rising from base camos up through Gold, Platinum and Diamond tiers

Modern Warfare 4 stacks five camo tiers on every weapon, and each tier is gated behind its own challenge set. This is the full list of what you are actually signing up for, tier by tier, so you can see where the easy unlocks end and the real grind begins. MW4 went live on 23 October 2026, so the challenge text below is now readable in game - where third-party trackers still disagree on a number, we say so and point you back to the in-game challenge card as the only authority.

The five camo tiers, in order

Every weapon runs the same ladder: eight Military camos from weapon level, three Special camos, the four-step Completionist chain, then the mode-specific Mastery tier, with Pyroclast Prestige camos above all of it. The important structural fact is that the whole ladder up to and including Divergence fills from a single shared Camo Track - play Multiplayer, Warzone or DMZ and it all counts toward the same bar. Only at Mastery does the track split three ways.

MW4 camo tiers and what each challenge group asks for
TierHow it unlocksWhere it counts
Military (8 camos)Reach weapon levels - purely from weapon XP, no special challengesAny mode (shared track)
Special (3 camos)Short per-weapon challenges (kill-type and streak tasks)Any mode (shared track)
GoldComplete the weapon's Special camo challengesAny mode (shared track)
PlatinumEarn Gold on a set number of weapons in the same classAny mode (shared track)
Harmonic BreakEarn Platinum across the required weaponsAny mode (shared track)
DivergenceFinish the 33 Harmonic Break challenges (one per launch weapon)Any mode - opens the Mastery tier
Mastery (9 camos)Mode-specific challenges - see belowMultiplayer, Warzone or DMZ only

So Military through Harmonic Break is volume, not difficulty. The first genuine wall is Divergence, the Completionist camo that requires Harmonic Break on all 33 launch weapons before the Mastery tier will even appear. It is the single unlock that opens everything above it, which is why it is the one most players look to skip.

Multiplayer mastery: Mercurial Drift, Polyatomic Reforged, Orion Reforged

Once Divergence is done, the Multiplayer set unlocks in order. The commonly cited requirements per weapon are: Mercurial Drift - get 10 kills in a single match, 250 times; Polyatomic Reforged - get 3 kills without taking damage, 300 times; and Orion Reforged - get 5 kills without dying, 500 times. Some trackers list a flat 250 repetitions for all three, so confirm the exact number on the weapon's challenge card. Either way, Orion Reforged is a per-weapon repetition grind measured in hundreds of qualifying matches.

Warzone mastery: Parallax, Damascus Reforged, Empyros

Warzone runs Parallax, then Damascus Reforged, then Empyros. Reporting at launch describes Empyros as unlocking once Damascus Reforged is earned on every weapon in Warzone, with the full numeric challenge wording expected to be finalised alongside Season 1 camo information on 6 November. Warzone mastery is inherently slower than Multiplayer because engagements per match are fewer, so even comparable challenge counts take more real time.

DMZ mastery: Chiral, Ripple Tide, Helio

DMZ gives Chiral, Ripple Tide and Helio. Helio is the one with the widest spread in the guides: most list 25,000 kills with Legendary weapons on a max-level Operator after Ripple Tide, while at least one source lists 2,500. That is a tenfold difference, so this is the clearest case of "read the in-game card before you trust a number". DMZ progression now also feeds the shared track, so the lower tiers are no longer a dead end for extraction players.

Pyroclast Prestige: the four above Mastery

Above all nine mastery camos sit four Pyroclast Prestige camos tied to prestige progression rather than to a single weapon. MW4 caps rank at 55, then opens 10 Prestige levels and 1,000 Prestige Master levels. These are the only top-end camos not earned from the weapon's own challenge track.

Where the grind is skippable

If you want the finishes without the hundreds of qualifying matches, the final camos can be completed on your own account: Orion Reforged for Multiplayer, Empyros for Warzone and Helio for DMZ, or the Divergence gate on its own if you only want the Mastery tier opened. There are also Platinum and Max Weapon Level services for the earlier tiers. The full menu is on the Modern Warfare 4 services hub. For the full tier picture, our MW4 mastery camos breakdown covers every camo name by mode, and if you are weighing whether to grind it, our camo grind time estimate has the hours.

How the camo challenges differ by mode

The same mastery camos take very different amounts of real time depending on the mode, because each mode produces eligible actions at a different rate. Multiplayer is the fastest: short matches, high kill counts and predictable spawns mean the Multiplayer mastery challenges tick over quickly, which is why Orion Reforged is the most reachable final camo. Warzone is slower by nature - fewer, less predictable fights per match - so Empyros is the longest grind even for comparable challenge counts. DMZ sits apart again, with Helio built around a Legendary-weapon kill requirement that rewards extraction regulars. Plan your route around that: do the shared tiers wherever kills come fastest, and save the mode-specific grind for the mode you actually enjoy.

Tracking your camo challenges

The only fully reliable source for what a challenge requires is the in-game challenge card for each weapon, which updates live and reflects the shipping requirements. Third-party camo trackers are useful for planning and for seeing the whole ladder at a glance, but several were built from beta data and disagree on specific numbers - the Helio kill count is the clearest example. Use a tracker to map your route, then confirm each actual requirement in game before committing hours to it. For a sense of the total time involved, our camo grind time guide turns these challenge counts into realistic hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many camo challenges are in MW4?

Per weapon you have eight Military camos from level, three Special camos, the Gold/Platinum/Harmonic Break/Divergence Completionist chain, and then a mode-specific Mastery tier. Across all 33 launch weapons that is thousands of individual challenge completions, which is why it is the largest camo grind Call of Duty has shipped.

What unlocks Divergence in MW4?

Divergence is the final Completionist camo. It unlocks after you finish the 33 Harmonic Break challenges - one per launch weapon - and earning it is what opens the Mastery tier above it.

Do camo challenges carry across Multiplayer, Warzone and DMZ?

Everything up to and including Divergence fills a single shared Camo Track, so it counts in any mode. The nine Mastery camos are the exception - they are earned only in their own mode, so Orion Reforged needs Multiplayer, Empyros needs Warzone and Helio needs DMZ.

Why do the camo requirement numbers differ between guides?

Several third-party trackers were built from early or beta data and have not all been corrected. The in-game challenge card for each weapon shows the live requirement - treat that as the only authority, especially for Helio and the Warzone set.

What is the hardest camo challenge in MW4?

The mastery camos are the hardest, and among them Helio's large Legendary-weapon kill requirement in DMZ and Orion Reforged's 500-per-weapon streak challenge are the most demanding. Divergence is the biggest Completionist wall because it needs Harmonic Break on all 33 weapons.

Where can I track MW4 camo challenges?

The in-game challenge card for each weapon is the authoritative tracker and shows live requirements. Third-party trackers help you see the full ladder, but confirm specific numbers in game, since some were built from early data.
