Modern Warfare 4 has nine mastery camos, not one. Three for Multiplayer, three for Warzone, three for DMZ, each set earned only in its own mode. Stack the four Pyroclast Prestige camos on top of that and you get the figure everyone keeps repeating without explaining: 13 top-end camos per weapon.
That structure was revealed at Call of Duty: NEXT on 21 August 2026 and the names are confirmed. The unlock requirements are not. Activision has published no challenge list as of 19 October 2026, and the "50 headshots"-style requirement tables circulating on guide sites and camo trackers are third-party estimates read off early builds. They contradict each other in places, which is the clearest possible evidence that none of them is authoritative.
MW4 launches on Friday 23 October 2026. This page covers all nine mastery camos by mode, the four prestige camos above them, how the tier sits on top of the Completionist chain, and how to plan a run without betting a fortnight on an unverified number.
Where mastery camos sit in the ladder
Each weapon runs five tiers. Eight Military camos come from weapon level. Three Special camos follow. Then the Completionist tier: Gold, Platinum, Harmonic Break, Divergence, in that fixed order. Mastery is the fourth tier, and it only becomes available once that Completionist chain is finished on the weapon. Pyroclast Prestige is the fifth and sits above everything.
The critical detail is that mastery is where the system stops being mode-agnostic. A weapon has one shared Camo Track that fills from play in Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone alike - Activision has confirmed that DMZ progression contributes to multiplayer progression - so everything up to and including Divergence accumulates wherever you play. Then the track splits three ways and you earn only the set belonging to the mode you are in.
One bar, three endings. That is why you cannot drift into a mastery camo by accident. The full tier breakdown is in our MW4 camo system explained page, and the first challenge-gated step in MW4 Gold camo.
All nine mastery camos, plus the four above them
Here is the complete set with what is and is not confirmed for each group. Treat the right-hand column as the honest state of knowledge rather than a disclaimer you can skip.
| Mode | First | Second | Third | Confirmed as of 19 Oct 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Multiplayer | Mercurial Drift | Polyatomic Reforged | Orion Reforged | Names and order yes; requirements no |
| Warzone | Parallax | Damascus Reforged | Empyros | Names and order yes; requirements no |
| DMZ | Chiral | Ripple Tide | Helio | Names and order yes; requirements no |
| Prestige | Pyroclast / Verge | Pyroclast Scatter | Pyroclast Cascade | Four camos reported; names not independently confirmed |
Nine plus four is 13. It is not 13 camos in total on a weapon - add the eight Military, three Special and four Completionist camos and the per-weapon figure is much larger. With 33 launch weapons including one melee, the full-roster version of this is the biggest camo grind Call of Duty has shipped.

Multiplayer: Mercurial Drift, Polyatomic Reforged, Orion Reforged
The Multiplayer set runs Mercurial Drift first, Polyatomic Reforged second, Orion Reforged third and final. Two of those three names are deliberate callbacks - Polyatomic and Orion were the top-end camos in Modern Warfare II, and "Reforged" signals a reworked version rather than a straight reissue. Reporting from the reveal describes Orion Reforged as a deep-space design built around crimson and nebula tones rather than the green-gold of the original, though final in-game art is the only thing worth judging it on.
Orion Reforged is the one most players are actually chasing, and it is the hardest claim to pin down. Some guides say it opens after Polyatomic Reforged is earned on all 33 launch weapons; others say every base-game weapon; others say the weapon totals have not been published at all. Those cannot all be right. Our Orion Reforged page goes through the competing claims properly.
Warzone: Parallax, Damascus Reforged, Empyros
Warzone runs Parallax, then Damascus Reforged, then Empyros. Damascus is the most storied name in Call of Duty camo history, so putting a Reforged version in the middle of the Warzone set rather than at the end is a notable choice - Empyros is the new name and the actual endpoint.
Warzone mastery work behaves differently from Multiplayer by nature. Engagements per match are fewer and less predictable, which historically made Warzone the slower route for challenge-based camo progress even when the challenges themselves were comparable. Nothing about MW4 has been published that changes that calculus, but it is an inference from how battle royale works rather than a confirmed property of these camos. Empyros covers the Warzone endpoint in more depth.

DMZ: Chiral, Ripple Tide, Helio
DMZ gets Chiral, Ripple Tide and Helio. This is the set that benefits most from MW4's shared-track design, because DMZ progression contributing to multiplayer progression means extraction play is no longer a progression dead end the way it could feel in previous titles.
DMZ early access opens on 20 October, three days before full launch, which gives DMZ-focused players a genuine head start on the shared part of the track - weapon levels, Military camos, Special camos. The mastery camos themselves need the mode live and the Completionist chain done, so the head start is on the preamble rather than the endgame. Helio covers the DMZ endpoint in detail.
Pyroclast Prestige: the four above mastery
Above all nine mastery camos sit four prestige camos, reported as Pyroclast, Pyroclast Verge, Pyroclast Scatter and Pyroclast Cascade. They attach to prestige progression rather than to an individual weapon's track. MW4 caps rank at 55, then opens 10 Prestige levels followed by 1,000 Prestige Master levels.
Two cautions. First, those four names were reported by a single outlet and are not independently confirmed - the count of four is more solid than the names. Second, prestige in MW4 is unusual: two paths, re-chosen at every prestige level. Classic resets your unlocks for a 20% XP bonus, a Permanent Unlock Token and extra cosmetics; Regular restarts you at level 1 but keeps all unlocks and Create-a-Class. Picking Classic mid-way through a class-wide camo requirement can strip access to weapons you still need.
Why the requirements are not public, and what to do about it
The structure was shown at a reveal event; the challenge tables were not. Everything specific you can read today therefore comes from datamines, beta builds or inference. The disagreements are easy to spot once you look: Divergence, the tier directly below mastery, is described by some sources as a per-weapon unlock that triggers once the other three Completionist camos are done, and by others as a single account-wide unlock earned after Harmonic Break across the launch roster. Those are completely different amounts of work.
The practical response is to separate structural decisions from numeric ones. Structural decisions are safe now: which mode's set you want, which weapon class you will finish first, whether you are going for one mastery camo or nine. Numeric decisions - how many weapons, how many headshots, how many matches - wait until 23 October, when the in-game challenge text becomes readable and becomes the only source worth using.

Planning a mastery run
Commit to one mode first. Nine mastery camos sounds like nine goals, but they are three goals in three places, and splitting your attention early means finishing none. Then pick a weapon class rather than a weapon, because from Platinum upward the Completionist requirements appear to go class-wide, so a class is the real unit of progress.
Then front-load the shared work. Everything up to Divergence pools across modes, so level and clear your lower tiers wherever you get the most engagements per minute, and save the mode-specific grind for last. Finally, watch the calendar: Season 1 arrives on 6 November and will add weapons. If a class-wide requirement counts the live roster, finishing a class before it grows is straightforwardly less work. If you would rather not grind the back half of a class yourself, that is what our Modern Warfare 4 services are there for.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many mastery camos are in MW4?
Nine - three per mode across Multiplayer, Warzone and DMZ. Multiplayer has Mercurial Drift, Polyatomic Reforged and Orion Reforged; Warzone has Parallax, Damascus Reforged and Empyros; DMZ has Chiral, Ripple Tide and Helio. Four Pyroclast Prestige camos sit above them, which is where the total of 13 comes from.
What do you need to unlock MW4 mastery camos?
You must finish the Completionist tier on the weapon first - Gold, Platinum, Harmonic Break and Divergence, in that order. Only then does the mastery tier open. The specific mastery challenges have not been published by Activision as of 19 October 2026.
Can I earn Multiplayer mastery camos in Warzone or DMZ?
No. The per-weapon Camo Track is shared, so base and Completionist progress accumulates from any mode, but the mastery camos themselves are mode-specific. Playing DMZ earns the DMZ set, not Orion Reforged.
Are the "50 headshots" style requirement lists accurate?
They are third-party estimates, usually derived from an early build, and they disagree with each other. Activision has not published mastery or Completionist challenge requirements. Read the challenge text in the weapon's Camo Track once the game is live and treat that as the only authority.
What is the final mastery camo in MW4?
There is no single final camo, which is the structural change this year. Orion Reforged ends the Multiplayer set, Empyros ends Warzone and Helio ends DMZ. Above all three sit the four Pyroclast Prestige camos tied to prestige progression rather than to one weapon.
