Modern Warfare 4's camo system is the deepest one Call of Duty has shipped. Five tiers per weapon, three separate mastery sets because there are three separate modes, and a prestige layer on top. If you have only ever chased Gold and Platinum in an older title, the shape has changed enough to be worth reading properly before launch.
MW4 arrives on Friday 23 October 2026 across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2, with DMZ early access on 20 October and Season 1 on 6 November. That timing matters here, because the structure of the system is confirmed while the challenge requirements are not.
What follows is the whole ladder end to end: 8 Military camos, 3 Special, 4 Completionist, 9 mastery camos split three per mode, and 4 Pyroclast Prestige camos. That is where the "13 camos" figure comes from, and it is the most misunderstood number in MW4 discussion right now.
The five-tier ladder in one pass
Every weapon runs the same ladder and the tiers are strictly sequential - you cannot skip ahead. Military comes first, tied to weapon level rather than challenges. Special sits above it as a short bridge. Completionist is where the grind proper begins, with four camos in a fixed order: Gold, Platinum, Harmonic Break, Divergence. Above that sits Mastery, where the system splits by mode, and above that again Pyroclast Prestige.
The important structural idea is that a weapon has one shared Camo Track. Based on what was shown at Call of Duty: NEXT in August, that track fills from play in Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone alike, and Activision has separately confirmed that DMZ progression contributes to multiplayer progression. So the bottom of the ladder is pooled across modes - the top is not, and that asymmetry is the whole design.
Military and Special: the first eleven camos
The first eight camos per weapon are the Military tier, unlocked from weapon level rather than from kill or headshot challenges. Use the gun, it levels, camos appear. There is no trick beyond picking modes that give you plenty of engagements - and because the track is shared, time in DMZ or Warzone counts toward the same weapon level as Multiplayer. This is where published guidance is actually safe: weapon levelling was playable in the beta and behaves predictably.
Once Military is complete, three Special camos become available. They function as the gate between "levelled the gun" and "actually grinding" - clearing Special is what makes the Completionist tier visible on that weapon. Activision has not published full names and art for all three per weapon, and they appear to vary rather than being one universal set, so treat any complete Special camo list you find today as provisional.

Completionist: Gold, Platinum, Harmonic Break, Divergence
Four camos, fixed order, and this is where MW4 adds names that did not exist in previous titles. Gold comes first. Platinum follows, and from Platinum upward the requirements appear to shift from per-weapon to class-wide - the traditional CoD pattern, and the reason Platinum is where most grinds slow down. Harmonic Break is third, Divergence fourth and final.
Each tier gates the next, so there is no route to Divergence that skips Harmonic Break, and no route to Harmonic Break that skips Platinum. Gold is the tier nearly everyone meets first and the thinking behind it is different enough to deserve its own page - see MW4 Gold camo. Everything stacked above all four is covered in MW4 mastery camos.
On requirements, be careful. Specific figures are circulating - a headshot count for assault rifle Platinum, a hipfire count for SMG Harmonic Break - and Activision has published none of it as of 19 October 2026. Those numbers come from early builds and third-party inference, and the sources disagree in ways that cannot all be correct. One example: some guides describe Divergence as a per-weapon unlock triggered once the other three Completionist camos are done, others as a single account-wide unlock earned after Harmonic Break across the launch roster. Read the in-game challenge text once the game is live.
Mastery camos: nine, three per mode
This is the tier that makes MW4 different. Rather than one top-end camo per weapon, there are three mastery camos per mode across three modes, so nine in total. The names are confirmed and they are mode-locked.
| Tier | Camos | Names | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Military | 8 per weapon | Weapon-level unlocks | Structure yes, full art no |
| Special | 3 per weapon | Not fully published | Count only |
| Completionist | 4 per weapon | Gold, Platinum, Harmonic Break, Divergence | Names and order yes, challenges no |
| Mastery - Multiplayer | 3 | Mercurial Drift, Polyatomic Reforged, Orion Reforged | Names yes, requirements no |
| Mastery - Warzone | 3 | Parallax, Damascus Reforged, Empyros | Names yes, requirements no |
| Mastery - DMZ | 3 | Chiral, Ripple Tide, Helio | Names yes, requirements no |
| Pyroclast Prestige | 4 | Pyroclast, Pyroclast Verge, Pyroclast Scatter, Pyroclast Cascade | Reported, not independently confirmed |
Nine mastery plus four Pyroclast gives the 13 figure. It is not 13 camos per weapon in total - it is 13 top-end camos, a different claim from the 15 or 19 sometimes quoted by people adding tiers together incorrectly. Orion Reforged is the final Multiplayer mastery camo and the one most people are chasing; our Orion Reforged page covers what is and is not known about it.

Pyroclast Prestige: the four above mastery
The four Pyroclast camos - Pyroclast, Pyroclast Verge, Pyroclast Scatter and Pyroclast Cascade - are tied to prestige progression rather than to a single weapon's track. MW4 caps rank at 55, then opens 10 Prestige levels plus 1,000 Prestige Master levels on top.
Prestige itself is unusual this year. There are two paths and you re-choose at every prestige level: Classic resets your unlocks in exchange for a 20% XP bonus, a Permanent Unlock Token and extra cosmetics; Regular restarts you at level 1 but keeps all unlocks and your Create-a-Class setups. Classic taking your unlocks away mid-grind is not something you want to discover by accident, and the prestige guide covers the trade in detail.
How the Pyroclast camos attach to that system - which levels award which camo, whether they apply per weapon or account-wide - has not been officially detailed, and the names are reported rather than independently confirmed.
What carries across Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone
The clean summary: base progression is shared, mastery is not. One Camo Track per weapon fills from any mode, so Military, Special and Completionist work done in DMZ counts toward the same weapon as work done in Multiplayer. At the mastery layer the track splits and you earn the three camos belonging to whichever mode you are playing.
Practically, mode choice becomes a late decision rather than an early one - a real improvement over titles where a Warzone player had to grind Multiplayer to finish a camo set. What you cannot do is accidentally earn Orion Reforged while playing DMZ.
Camos that are not part of the track at all
Worth separating out, because it distorts camo counts. Store bundles, pre-order rewards, event unlocks and beta rewards all put camos in your armory that have nothing to do with the five-tier ladder - cosmetic, instant, and counting toward nothing. So if you are working out how far through the system you are, count tiers, not camos in the list. A weapon with 20 camos available might still be three tiers from Gold, which is why trackers that total raw camo counts mislead.

How to approach it from launch day
Pick a class and a mode, not a weapon and a hope. Because Platinum and above appear to be class-gated, finishing a class is worth more than scattering Gold across the arsenal. Beta data pointed to the M4 as the standout assault rifle and the ISO Nightshade as the strongest SMG, but that was beta balance and it will change - do not build a month of grinding around a tier list from a test build. Our best guns page tracks the meta as it settles, and our Modern Warfare 4 services page exists for anyone who would rather not grind the back half of a class.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many camos are in MW4?
Per weapon: 8 Military, 3 Special and 4 Completionist. Above those sit 9 mastery camos - three each for Multiplayer, Warzone and DMZ - plus 4 Pyroclast Prestige camos, giving the 13 top-end camos people refer to.
What order do the MW4 Completionist camos unlock in?
Gold, then Platinum, then Harmonic Break, then Divergence. The order is confirmed and strictly sequential - each tier gates the next. The exact challenge attached to each tier has not been published by Activision as of 19 October 2026.
Does camo progress carry between Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone?
The per-weapon Camo Track is shared, so base, Special and Completionist progress accumulates from any of the three modes. The mastery camos at the top are mode-specific, three per mode, so you earn the set belonging to whichever mode you played.
Are the camo challenge requirements confirmed?
No. The tier structure and the camo names are confirmed, but the per-weapon and per-class challenge requirements are not public as of 19 October 2026. Numbers circulating on guide sites are third-party estimates from early builds and they contradict each other in places.
Do the Pyroclast camos work like the mastery camos?
They sit above mastery and are tied to prestige progression rather than a single weapon's track. MW4 has 10 Prestige levels plus 1,000 Prestige Master levels after the level 55 cap. Exactly how the four Pyroclast camos attach to those levels has not been officially detailed, and the names themselves are reported rather than independently confirmed.
