Modern Warfare 4 is the first Call of Duty that makes you choose how you prestige. Hit rank 55 and the game offers two different doors: Classic Prestige, which wipes your unlocks and pays you for the pain, and Regular Prestige, which resets the number on your card and leaves your arsenal exactly where it was. Activision's own progression post calls it a series first, and it is.
This is not a one-time commitment. You make the choice again at every Prestige level, so it is less a character build and more a repeated bet on how you want the next 55 levels to feel. MW4 launches globally on Friday 23 October 2026, and nobody carries a rank into it - your Black Ops 7 prestige does not come with you.
Below: what each path resets, what each pays, why the Permanent Unlock Token is the real decision hiding inside the choice, and who should pick which. Anything not confirmed by Activision as of 19 October is flagged rather than guessed.
The road to 55 before any of this matters
MW4's soldier rank runs from Level 1 to Level 55, private up to commander, and most levels hand you at least one unlock on the way - weapons, equipment, perks, field upgrades, killstreaks and Create-a-Class slots. That is the ladder you finish before either door opens.
XP feeds in from more than one place: multiplayer, DMZ, and Warzone once Season 1 arrives on 6 November, all into the same 1-55 track. The flow is one-way, though - DMZ keeps a separate 1-70 progression that multiplayer and Warzone XP do not raise. The efficient route up the ladder is the subject of our levelling to 55 guide.

Classic Prestige: what it costs and what it pays
Classic is the loop Modern Warfare players have been asking to get back for years. Choose it at 55 and your level unlocks and Create-a-Class progress are re-locked. You go back to Level 1 with a stripped loadout and earn the arsenal again.
For that you get three things, in Activision's own framing: a 20 percent XP boost, one Permanent Unlock Token, and bonus cosmetic rewards on top of the standard milestones. The boost is what makes the re-grind survivable. Third-party guides describe it as permanent and stacking once per Classic Prestige, and the top-line Classic reward as an exclusive Prime variant of an Operator or Blueprint - neither appears in Activision's wording, so treat both as unconfirmed.
MW4 offers 10 levels of Prestige and then 1,000 Prestige Master levels, so Classic is a loop you can run ten times. One report says the defined reward list extends to Prestige Master 90 at launch, with level colour customisation around Prestige Master 56. The full 1,000-level reward table is unpublished, so the back half of that track is unknown.
Regular Prestige: keep the gear, reset the number
Regular is the new option and the quieter one. You restart progression from Level 1, but every level unlock and all your Create-a-Class content stay intact. Nothing re-locks. You still earn that Prestige level's rewards, just a subset of them - Activision's description is explicit that the XP boost, the token and the extra cosmetics belong to Classic.
That reads as a worse deal until you price the re-grind. A Classic reset takes away the gun you have been levelling, the perks your loadouts are built around and the Create-a-Class slots you were using. Mid camo grind, or if you play one weapon seriously, Regular collects the emblem and the milestone rewards without surrendering any of it. It is the path for people who want the badge and not the homework.

The Permanent Unlock Token is the entire decision
If you read one section, read this one. The Permanent Unlock Token permanently unlocks a single Level Unlock item of your choice from the available loadout items, and Activision is specific about the scope: it stays accessible for the rest of your levelling journey, including every future Classic Prestige. It is not a one-reset exemption. It is a hole you punch in the re-grind forever.
That reframes the choice. Classic is not simply harder - it is a trade where you accept a full re-lock to make one item immune to every re-lock you will ever do again. Run Classic ten times and you have ten items that never re-lock, so your tenth reset starts with a functional loadout rather than a stock rifle. Spend each token on whatever takes longest to earn back: usually a late-level weapon you are built around, not a cosmetic. The eligibility list is unpublished.

Who should pick Classic, and who should pick Regular
First, the detail most summaries skip: the choice is not made once. Every time you reach 55 you are asked again, so you can mix paths across your ten Prestige levels. A sensible sequence falls out of that. Early on, when the meta is unsettled and you are still learning which weapons you like, Regular keeps your options open at zero cost. Later, once you know which gun you cannot live without, Classic gets much cheaper to take.
Pick Classic if you want the 20 percent XP boost and the full reward set, you enjoy the re-unlock loop as a reason to use guns you would otherwise ignore, and you know which item you want permanent. The boost is the only progression accelerator either path offers, which matters if your goal is Prestige Master rather than the badge at 55.
Pick Regular if you are mid camo grind, play one or two weapons seriously, mainly play with friends and cannot afford to be the one with no equipment for a week, or simply do not enjoy re-earning things. MW4's completionist and mastery camo tiers are a long project and losing your loadout mid-project is a real cost - the structure is in our camo system explainer and the end of that road in the mastery camos guide. Unsure? Regular is lower-regret, because the choice comes back around.
What carries over from Black Ops 7, and what does not
Very little, and this catches people out every year. MW4 is a separate Infinity Ward title with its own progression, so your player level and Prestige do not transfer. Everyone starts at Level 1 on 23 October regardless of Black Ops 7, Black Ops 6 or any earlier Modern Warfare. Weapon levels, attachment unlocks and camos from BO7 do not come across either, mastery camos included. Blueprints are the exception worth knowing: Operators, Operator Skins and Weapon Blueprints from MWII, MWIII, BO6 and BO7 stay usable in MW4's Warzone through a Legacy tab, with Gunsmith limited to a five-attachment version.
What does come across, per pre-launch reporting, is account-level content: COD Points if you stay on the same platform, and unspent double XP tokens. MW4 beta rewards including the Level 30 unlocks become available at launch, and campaign early access since 16 October hands out Operators and XP tokens that unlock for multiplayer and DMZ on the 23rd. Weapon Prestige is reported to return as a separate per-gun track, though how it interacts with the two soldier-rank paths has not been detailed.
What Activision has not confirmed as of 19 October
The gaps, precisely: the full 1,000-level Prestige Master reward table has not been published, and the report of rewards extending to Prestige Master 90 at launch is third-party. Whether the 20 percent Classic boost stacks across multiple Classic Prestiges or replaces itself each time has not been stated. The token eligibility list has not been published. Whether Regular carries any XP bonus is unstated - the official wording credits the boost only to Classic. And nothing covers how Prestige interacts with Ranked Play, which has no announced date, as covered in our Ranked Play post.
If you would rather have the grind handled, our Modern Warfare 4 page covers rank and camo services. Otherwise: take Regular while you are still learning the game, take Classic once you know what your token is for, and remember you decide ten times.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the max rank in Modern Warfare 4?
Soldier rank runs 1 to 55, then 10 Prestige levels and 1,000 Prestige Master levels. The full reward table for those 1,000 levels has not been published.
Does my Black Ops 7 rank or prestige carry over to MW4?
No. Progression starts fresh at Level 1 for everyone on 23 October. COD Points on the same platform and unspent double XP tokens are reported to carry, but rank, weapon levels and camos do not.
Is Classic or Regular Prestige better?
Classic pays more - 20 percent XP, a Permanent Unlock Token, bonus cosmetics - in exchange for re-locking your unlocks and Create-a-Class. Classic wins once you know which item you want permanent; Regular wins while you are still experimenting.
What should I spend the Permanent Unlock Token on?
Whatever takes longest to earn back - usually a late-level weapon or a perk your loadouts depend on. It applies to every future Classic Prestige, not just the next one. The eligibility list is unpublished.
Does prestiging reset my camo progress or DMZ level?
Activision's descriptions cover level unlocks and Create-a-Class, not weapon levels or camo progress, and DMZ's separate 1-70 track is untouched. The precise interaction with weapon progression is unconfirmed until launch notes land.
