Everybody starts Modern Warfare 4 at Level 1. Your Black Ops 7 rank does not come with you, your weapon levels do not come with you, and on 23 October the entire player base is holding the same stock loadout. Rank 55 gates every Prestige reward and most of the late unlocks, so the first week matters more than usual.
The most useful thing here is also the thing most launch guides skip: progression starts three days before multiplayer does. DMZ early access opens 20 October, and the XP you earn in it counts toward the same 1-55 soldier rank. That is a real head start, available to anyone with a digital pre-order, and most of the people who will complain about being under-levelled on launch night are not using it.
MW4 launches Friday 23 October 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X and S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. Below: what travels between modes, where XP comes from, why objective modes out-earn Team Deathmatch, and what Activision has not published.
The head start most guides miss: DMZ on 20 October
DMZ early access opens 20 October at 10am Pacific, worldwide at the same moment, for anyone who pre-ordered a digital edition - Standard or Vault, it does not matter which. Multiplayer has no early access at all; it unlocks for everybody at launch.
What makes those three days valuable is that MW4 treats progression as a global system. Activision has said XP and weapon XP earned during DMZ early access count toward career progression and unlocks, camos included, and Infinity Ward confirmed in a developer AMA on 9 October that weapon levels, attachment unlocks, camo progress and player rank all carry across modes - the phrasing was that any progression achieved across multiplayer and DMZ is counted. Infinity Ward also said the full camo grind is accessible and progressible during early access, so the camo clock starts on the 20th.
Three days will not put you at 55. It is realistically worth a chunk of early levels, a head start on two or three guns, and skipping that launch-night phase with no equipment and no perks. Our DMZ explainer covers how the mode works.

What travels between modes, and what does not
The rules are asymmetric, and assuming the wrong direction wastes time. Into your soldier rank: multiplayer XP, DMZ XP, and from 6 November Warzone XP. With your guns: weapon levels, attachment unlocks and camo progress, all shared across modes.
Not travelling: the right to use a weapon. Unlocking or buying a gun inside DMZ, via Weapon Manuals, does not unlock it in multiplayer, and the reverse holds. Also not travelling: your DMZ level, on a separate 1-70 track that multiplayer and Warzone XP do not feed. So the model is one shared bucket for rank and weapon progress, and two separate systems for which guns you may hold where. A useful side effect: you keep a deployment's DMZ XP even if you fail to exfil, so a bad run is still a paid run.
Where MW4 XP actually comes from
Activision has not published a table of XP values for MW4, so anyone quoting exact numbers is importing them from an older title. What is reliable is the shape, consistent across recent Call of Duty games: eliminations, assists, objective score events such as captures, holds, defends, plants and confirms, killstreak contributions, challenge completions, and finishing the match. That last one is the quiet earner - a lump sum that does not care how you played.
Challenges are the other lump sum and the part most players leave on the table. Dailies reroll, so you can cycle away the ones that ask you to play in a way you hate and keep the ones matching the loadout you were running anyway. Weekly and weapon challenges stack on top. Treat them as a list you check before queueing.

Why objective modes usually beat Team Deathmatch
This is arithmetic rather than a trick. In Team Deathmatch the only score events available are kills and assists. In Hardpoint, Domination or Kill Confirmed you still get the kills, then get paid again for capturing, holding, defending and picking up tags. The same ten minutes produces more score events, and matches run longer.
Hardpoint deserves attention because the objective moves, so fights keep happening in the same handful of places and you are nearly always near something that pays. Domination rewards the player who breaks a spawn and holds two flags rather than chasing three. Kill Confirmed is the compromise if you only want to shoot - a second payment for walking four metres. Two caveats: it only works if you play the objective, and MW4's launch pool leans medium-sized because Shipment is not in it on day one. The full map list has the breakdown.
| Date | What opens | Effect on soldier rank |
|---|---|---|
| 16 October | Campaign early access, digital pre-order | No multiplayer XP; banks five XP tokens |
| 20 October | DMZ early access, 10am Pacific | Full XP, weapon XP and camos toward 1-55 |
| 23 October | Full launch, multiplayer for everyone | Campaign and beta rewards usable |
| 27 October | Shipment joins the pool | Small-map option for fast challenge XP |
| 29 October | Possession mode | Another objective score source |
| 30 October | Infected mode | Party playlist, XP profile unconfirmed |
| 6 November | Season 1 and Warzone integration | Warzone XP feeds the same rank |
Your double XP tokens, and when to burn them
You will probably start launch day with more tokens than you realise. Campaign early access has been live since 16 October and its 16 missions hand out three Double XP Tokens and two Double Weapon XP Tokens, plus eight base Operators and a few cosmetics, all unlocking for multiplayer and DMZ on 23 October. Unspent double XP tokens from Black Ops 7 are also reported to transfer, so check your inventory before assuming you have none.
Timing is simple if you are disciplined. Do not activate a token until you have a clear hour, a full party and a playlist you are happy to sit in - a token spent on two games before bed is worse than no token. Queue the mode that pays most, not the one you are best at. And line up several near-complete challenges first, because their lump sums land inside the window and effectively double too. One report says MW4 tokens only tick down while you are in a match rather than in real time; that is unconfirmed, so do not plan around it.
If you reach 55 and take Classic Prestige, that path carries a 20 percent XP boost of its own. Both paths are in the prestige guide.
Weapon XP is a separate track, and it is shared by class
Soldier rank and weapon level are different ladders, and the weapon ladder rewards planning. Standard attachments unlock per class rather than per gun: earn a part once and it becomes available on every weapon in that class that can accept it. If a weapon level would hand you a duplicate, that level is skipped and you get a Bonus Level Up instead.
So the first weapon you max in each class is the expensive one and everything after is cheaper. Picking your first rifle and first SMG deliberately, rather than spreading XP across six guns, is the difference between two finished weapons and six half-built ones. A weapon's Apex Attachment is also the last reward on its track. More in maxing weapon levels fast.
A launch-week plan, and what is not confirmed
From the 20th, play DMZ as weapon levelling with a side of rank: pick one rifle and one SMG and commit. From the 23rd, run objective playlists with your challenge list open, and save tokens for your longest session rather than your first. From the 27th, Shipment makes challenge clearing dramatically faster. Expect the meta to move, which is why our Modern Warfare 4 coverage avoids frozen tier lists.
The gaps, as of 19 October: no XP values have been published for any MW4 action, so every per-kill figure circulating is inferred from older titles. No double XP event schedule has been announced. The XP profile of Possession and Infected is unknown. Whether tokens tick only during matches is unconfirmed, as are the weapon levels required for any gun or its Apex. And the claim that Master Prestige permanently unlocks all multiplayer content does not appear in Activision's wording - what is described is a single Permanent Unlock Token per Classic Prestige.

Levelling and camo progress run on the same weapon track, so it pays to keep an eye on camo progress while you grind rather than discovering a half-finished class later.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does DMZ XP really count toward multiplayer rank in MW4?
Yes. Activision has said DMZ early access XP counts toward career progression and unlocks including camos, and Infinity Ward confirmed weapon levels, attachment unlocks, camo progress and rank carry across modes. The reverse is not true for DMZ's own 1-70 level.
Can I level up before MW4 launches?
From 20 October, yes, through DMZ early access with a digital pre-order. Campaign early access from 16 October does not grant multiplayer XP, but its rewards and tokens unlock at launch.
What is the fastest mode to rank up in MW4?
Objective modes such as Hardpoint, Domination and Kill Confirmed generate more score events per minute than Team Deathmatch. Activision has not published XP values, so no mode can be called fastest with certainty.
Do my Black Ops 7 double XP tokens carry over?
Unspent tokens are reported to transfer, as are COD Points if you stay on the same platform. Rank, weapon levels and camos do not carry - everyone starts at Level 1.
Is Shipment available at launch for grinding?
No. Shipment arrives 27 October, with Possession on the 29th and Infected on the 30th. The first four days lean medium-sized, so challenge clearing will be slower than you are used to.
