MW4 Camo Tracker: How to Track Camo Progress

JGOD video thumbnail breaking down how weapon and account levelling actually works in Modern Warfare 4

Search "MW4 camo tracker" this week and you get two very different things back: the progression menu inside Modern Warfare 4 itself, and a pile of third-party sites promising a complete checklist of every camo challenge in the game. Only one of those is trustworthy right now, and it is the one that ships with the game.

Modern Warfare 4 launches on Friday 23 October 2026. Campaign early access has been live since 16 October and DMZ early access opens on 20 October, but multiplayer progression proper - the part that actually drives a camo grind - begins at launch. That matters, because almost every "full camo requirement list" currently online was assembled from beta builds, datamines and sensible guesswork rather than from the shipped challenge table.

This guide covers what the in-game Camo Track shows you per weapon, how to read it without guessing, how to plan a grind across the five tiers and three modes, and exactly where third-party trackers stop being useful. Anything not confirmed by Activision as of 19 October is flagged as such.

What a "camo tracker" means in MW4 right now

The phrase covers two separate tools. The first is the Camo Track built into the weapon menu: a per-weapon progression view that lists every camo the gun can earn and the challenge text attached to each one. It updates as you play, it is tied to your account, and the requirement it prints is the requirement. There is no interpretation needed.

The second is an external website or spreadsheet where you tick weapons off by hand. These are planning tools - useful for what the in-game menu is bad at, like seeing all 33 launch weapons at once or working out which class you are closest to finishing, and unreliable for exact numbers until the game is live.

If you take one thing from this page: use an external tracker as a notepad and the in-game Camo Track as the rulebook. People who do it the other way round spend a weekend chasing a requirement that was never in the game.

The in-game Camo Track is the only source of truth

You reach it the way you have in every recent Call of Duty: open the weapon in the gunsmith or armory, then move to its camo section. Activision has not published a screenshot-by-screenshot walkthrough of the MW4 menus, so treat exact wording as provisional - but the structure has held across the last several titles and the beta used the same pattern.

Per weapon you get a vertical list of tiers with a state attached to each: locked, in progress with a counter, or earned. Level-gated tiers show the level required. Challenge-based tiers show the challenge text and, once active, a live counter. That counter is the number to plan around, not a figure from a guide. Two habits make it far more useful: check it between matches rather than only at the end of a session, and re-read the challenge text every time you change weapon, because requirements differ by weapon class.

The five tiers, and where tracking gets confusing

MW4 runs five camo tiers per weapon. The first two are effectively automatic if you play the gun, the third is where the grind starts, and the last two are endgame. The table below is the part worth bookmarking, because it separates what a tracker can honestly tell you today from what it cannot.

TierCamosGated byWhat a tracker can tell you on 19 Oct 2026
Military8Weapon levelReliable - these follow levelling, so a weapon-level planner works
Special3Clearing the Military tierTier size confirmed; individual camo names and art not fully public
Completionist4 (Gold, Platinum, Harmonic Break, Divergence)Clearing Special, then each tier in orderOrder confirmed; the challenges themselves are not published
Mastery3 per mode (9 total)Finishing the Completionist chainAll nine names confirmed; unlock conditions are not
Pyroclast Prestige4Prestige progressionNames reported by a single outlet; requirements unknown

Nine mastery camos plus four Pyroclast Prestige camos is where the "13 camos" figure you keep seeing comes from. The full tier-by-tier walkthrough lives in our MW4 camo system explained breakdown if you want the whole ladder in one place.

Reading your progress across Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone

This is the part most trackers get structurally wrong. Based on what was shown at Call of Duty: NEXT in August, a weapon has one shared Camo Track that fills from play in Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone alike - but the mastery camos at the top of it are mode-specific, three per mode. Activision has also confirmed that DMZ progression contributes to multiplayer progression. So the mental model is one bar with three endings: base and Completionist work is pooled, mastery work is not.

The tracking consequence is easy to miss. Logging "weapon X: Completionist done" is not enough - you also need to know which mode you intend to take that weapon through, because Mercurial Drift, Polyatomic Reforged and Orion Reforged are Multiplayer camos; Parallax, Damascus Reforged and Empyros are Warzone; Chiral, Ripple Tide and Helio are DMZ. Our multiplayer camo challenges and DMZ camo challenges pages split those out by mode.

Why third-party camo trackers exist, and their hard limit

They exist because the in-game menu is a drill-down: excellent at one weapon, useless at thirty-three. There is no native "11 of 33 weapons at Platinum" view, no sort by closest-to-finished, no export. Players have wanted a spreadsheet layer on CoD camos since Damascus, and sites keep filling that gap.

The limit is specific: the challenge requirements are not public. Lists quoting a precise number of headshots, double kills or hipfire kills per class are third-party estimates, usually from an early build. You can see the problem in how badly they disagree - some describe Divergence as unlocking per weapon once the other three Completionist camos are done, others as a single account-wide unlock after Harmonic Break across the launch roster. Those cannot both be right, and neither is sourced to Activision.

There is also a safety angle. Any tracker that asks you to hand over Activision account credentials to "sync" your progress is not worth the convenience. Until there is an official progression API, keep it to manual checklists.

Building a grind plan you can actually follow

A plan that survives contact with the real challenge list looks roughly like this. Pick the mode you want your first mastery camo in and commit, because that choice fixes which three camos you are working toward. Level weapons wherever you get the most engagements per minute - usually objective modes in Multiplayer, though DMZ counts too. Then work in batches by weapon class rather than across the whole arsenal, because the Completionist tiers from Platinum upward appear to be class-gated rather than purely per-weapon.

A workable launch-week shape: spend the first two days levelling three or four guns in one class to clear Military and Special, read the actual Completionist challenge text in game, then set your order. Do not pre-commit a fortnight of play to a requirement you have only read on a website. For the levelling side, max weapon levels fast and level up fast cover the XP mechanics rather than the camo logic, and our Modern Warfare 4 services page is there if you would rather not grind the back half of a class yourself.

The mistakes that cost the most time

Four come up repeatedly. Chasing a leaked requirement instead of the in-game text wastes whole sessions and is the most common of the lot. Spreading Completionist work across all 33 launch weapons at once feels productive and finishes nothing. Grinding mastery progress in a mode you did not mean to - easy when the base track is shared - means the counter you wanted never moved. And assuming Black Ops 7 progress carries over: it does not. Rank starts fresh in MW4, caps at 55, and prestige begins from there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an official MW4 camo tracker?

Yes, in the sense that the in-game Camo Track in each weapon's menu is the authoritative view of your progress. Activision has not announced a companion web or app tracker for MW4 camos as of 19 October 2026.

Do camos or weapon progress carry over from Black Ops 7?

No. Rank does not carry over from BO7 to Modern Warfare 4 - you start at level 1 and work to the level 55 cap before prestige opens. Camo progress is per title, so MW4 camos are earned from scratch on MW4 weapons.

Does DMZ progress count toward multiplayer camos?

DMZ progression contributes to multiplayer progression, and the shared Camo Track means play in DMZ advances the same per-weapon track. The mastery camos at the top are still mode-specific, though - DMZ play earns the DMZ mastery camos (Chiral, Ripple Tide, Helio), not the Multiplayer set.

Are the exact camo challenge requirements known yet?

No. Activision has not published the per-weapon or per-class challenge requirements as of 19 October 2026. Figures quoted on guide sites and camo trackers are third-party estimates, often read off a beta build, and they contradict each other. Read the challenge text in game once the title is live.

Should I plan my grind now or wait until launch?

Plan the structure now - which mode you want mastery in, which class you will start with, which weapons you enjoy using - and leave the specific challenge targets until 23 October. The structural decisions are safe because the tier order is confirmed; the numeric targets are not.
