MW4 DMZ Camos: How DMZ Camo Challenges Will Work

MW4 DMZ update thumbnail with tiles for the skill tree, new bosses, dynamic weather and a red mastery camo

MW4 DMZ camos run on the same weapon Camo Track as the rest of Modern Warfare 4, but the mastery challenges on top of it happen inside an extraction mode. That changes the job. The weapon you are levelling has to be in your loadout, and a failed exfil can take it away.

Activision has explained the structure and the DMZ rules around gear, but the DMZ camo challenge list itself is not public ahead of the October 23, 2026 launch. This guide separates what is confirmed from what is reported or unknown, and flags where an earlier Modern Warfare game offers useful context.

How DMZ camo progress fits the MW4 camo system

Activision's August 21 multiplayer blog lays out the frame. Each weapon has one Camo Track that progresses across Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone. Completing it unlocks that weapon's Mastery Camo Challenges, with three mastery camos to earn in each mode.

Weapon levels are shared too. The October 9 FOB guide says weapon progression counts across Multiplayer and DMZ, and attachments already unlocked in Multiplayer are available in DMZ. A summary of Infinity Ward's October 9 Reddit AMA adds that camo progress and player rank carry across modes, while the right to buy a weapon in DMZ does not.

So DMZ camo progress is not a separate silo at the base level: Camo Track work done in another mode counts toward the same weapon. For the Multiplayer side of the same structure, see how the MW4 Multiplayer camo challenges are set up.

The three DMZ mastery tiers

Above the Camo Track sit the DMZ mastery camos, in the order Activision showed them. The class and all-weapon gates come from GamesRadar's October 1 breakdown rather than from Activision, and the exact challenge text is still unpublished.

  • Chiral: a per-weapon mastery challenge that opens after the weapon's base camo progression.
  • Ripple Tide: opens once a whole weapon class has Chiral.
  • Helio camo: the final DMZ mastery camo, tied to Ripple Tide on every gun.

The MW4 Helio camo guide walks through each step and compares the trio with the Multiplayer and Warzone sets, so this page stays on how the challenges play out inside DMZ.

Getting the right gun into a DMZ deployment

Multiplayer lets you equip any weapon you have unlocked. DMZ does not, and that is the first real gate on the DMZ camo grind. Activision lists several ways to get a weapon: the Free Loadout, your Stash, the Gunsmith, the Vendor, Blueprints, and loot taken from enemies, Lieutenants, rival players and military containers.

The Gunsmith is the reliable route, with a catch. It unlocks at DMZ level 10, and to buy a base weapon you must first find and extract with that weapon's Weapon Manual. After that you can buy it as often as you like with DMZ Cash. Activision's example is a base M4 at around 5,000 DMZ Cash, with each attachment slot costing extra.

Looted guns work differently. Any weapon you extract with can be taken into the Gunsmith as a single copy, but extracting it does not unlock that weapon type for purchase, so once that copy is lost it is gone. Blueprints get one free use in DMZ, then a discounted rebuy if lost. The Free Loadout costs nothing and Activision says you keep its items if you extract, but the blog does not say which weapons it includes.

Space is the last limit. At first you can carry two weapons plus a melee in and out of a deployment, and a Weapon Backpack adds room for one more.

DMZ levels that shape the camo grind

DMZ has its own level track from 1 to 70, separate from the 1 to 55 player level. Several early milestones decide how much control you have over which guns you can grind. These come from Activision's FOB guide.

  • DMZ level 2: the 3D Printer and the first recipes, including the Medium Backpack with Secure Slots.
  • DMZ level 5: the Vendor, whose rotating stock includes weapons for DMZ Cash.
  • DMZ level 10: the Gunsmith, where extracted Weapon Manuals become weapons you can buy again and again.

DMZ XP from every deployment counts toward these levels, including runs that end in a failed exfil. Until the Gunsmith opens, the guns available for DMZ camo progress depend on what you loot, buy from the Vendor and store.

Which DMZ camo challenge types could be hardest

This section is partly inference, because the DMZ challenge wording has not been published. What can be judged is which kinds of requirement would clash with how DMZ plays.

Kills on players versus AI

Previous-game context first. In Modern Warfare II, Prima Games noted that AI kills did not count toward weapon camo challenges, and that "Operator" kills meant real players in Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone 2. Activision has not said how MW4's DMZ challenges treat AI combatants.

If they count only rival Operators, they will be slow, because PvP in DMZ is optional and other squads may never cross your path. Chasing players also has a cost Activision has spelled out. Killing rival Operators earns a Bounty, four kills across deployments makes you Wanted, and nearby Operators are alerted when a Wanted player comes close.

Single-run requirements

Any requirement that must be met in one match would have to be met in one deployment, with your loadout at stake. There is no quick respawn to fall back on. A downed Operator has to be revived by a squadmate or get back up with their own kit, or they go missing in action and the run is over for them.

Heavy targets and escalation

Hajin's threat system escalates the enemy response as you draw attention, up to attack helicopters and Deathstalker drones. Commanders such as the Colossus and patrolling tanks are heavily armored. More enemies can mean more kills toward a challenge, but also a higher chance of losing the gun you are levelling.

What a failed extraction costs a camo grinder

Multiplayer camo grinding costs nothing but time. In DMZ, Activision's rules make a failed run cost real things.

  • The Loadout, including the weapon being levelled and the attachments bought for it, because the Loadout only returns after a successful exfil.
  • Backpack items that were not in a Secure Slot.
  • The Operator's gear, since an Operator recovered from MIA status comes back without it.

What you keep is XP. Activision says DMZ XP earned during a deployment counts even if you fail to exfil, and the June deep dive says there are no XP penalties for dying. Neither blog spells out weapon XP, and neither says whether camo challenge progress made before a death is banked. That is the most important unknown for the DMZ camo grind.

Ways to limit those losses are covered in the Helio camo grind planner and the DMZ items guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do DMZ matches count toward MW4 camos?

Yes for the shared Camo Track. Activision says each weapon's Camo Track progresses across Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone, and DMZ also has its own three mastery camos: Chiral, Ripple Tide and Helio.

Are DMZ mastery camos separate from Multiplayer mastery camos?

Yes. The base Camo Track is shared, but each mode has its own mastery trio. Multiplayer ends at Orion Reforged, Warzone at Empyros and DMZ at the Helio camo.

Do AI kills count for DMZ camo challenges?

Not confirmed. In Modern Warfare II, AI kills did not count toward camo challenges, so check each MW4 challenge's wording once the list is live.

Do you keep camo progress if you fail to extract?

Unconfirmed. Activision says DMZ XP counts even after a failed exfil, but it has not said whether camo challenge progress made before a death is kept.

Do you need a Weapon Manual to level a gun in DMZ?

Not to use it. A weapon from your Stash or one picked up in Hajin can be used straight away. The Manual is what lets you buy fresh copies of that weapon in the Gunsmith.
