Anyone planning the Helio camo grind wants a number of hours, and nobody can give an honest one before launch. The DMZ challenge list is not public, DMZ is not playable until Early Access opens on October 20, 2026, and the full game follows on October 23. What can be planned is the shape of the work and the risks that slow it down.
This guide covers the factors that will set your pace, a weapon order built around the reported class gate, how to protect the guns you are levelling, which runs suit the grind, and the case for solo or squad play. The MW4 Helio camo explainer covers what the camo is and the unlock path itself.
Why nobody can give an honest Helio camo time yet
Any hour figure published before launch is a guess, because three inputs are missing. The DMZ mastery challenge text and counts are unpublished. Infinity Ward has not shared how XP rates in DMZ compare with Multiplayer, according to a summary of its October 9 Reddit AMA. And nobody knows yet whether challenge progress survives a failed extraction.
What is known is the scope. Activision lists 33 launch weapons, and the DMZ Gunsmith shows 32 of them across eight categories. If GamesRadar's reported structure holds, each counted weapon needs its Camo Track finished and Chiral earned, each class needs full Chiral coverage before Ripple Tide opens, and the Helio camo needs Ripple Tide on every gun. That is a long list of separate jobs, and every DMZ job carries extraction risk.
The factors that will set your Helio camo pace
- How much Camo Track work you do outside DMZ. The track is shared across Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone, so base progress can be done wherever you are fastest.
- How quickly you get weapon access in DMZ. Buying a base weapon needs its Weapon Manual extracted first, and the Gunsmith only opens at DMZ level 10.
- Your extraction rate. Every failed run costs the gun in your Loadout and the DMZ Cash spent building it.
- Whether progress is banked on death. If partial challenge progress is lost with a failed run, careful play will matter far more.
- What counts as a kill. In Modern Warfare II, AI kills did not count for camo challenges. If MW4's DMZ challenges need rival Operators, those will be the slowest part.
- Weapons added later. Activision has not said how post-launch weapons affect the Helio camo requirement.
Plan the Helio camo grind by weapon class
GamesRadar reports that Ripple Tide opens per class, once every weapon in that class has Chiral. If that holds, finishing one class at a time opens Ripple Tide challenges sooner than spreading Chiral thinly across every category. Activision's DMZ Gunsmith list gives the class sizes.
| Category | Launch weapons | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Assault Rifles | 8 | Largest class, so it needs the most Chiral completions before its Ripple Tide opens |
| SMGs | 5 | Second-largest class |
| Shotguns | 2 | Smallest class, so the fewest Chiral completions before its Ripple Tide opens |
| LMGs | 3 | Small class |
| Marksman Rifles | 3 | Small class |
| Sniper Rifles | 3 | Small class |
| Pistols | 4 | Secondary weapons; either weapon slot can hold one |
| Launchers | 4 | No attachments, and not confirmed to count toward the Helio camo |
At first you can carry two weapons in and out of a deployment, plus a melee, and a Weapon Backpack adds room for one more. Levelling two guns from the same class per run is the simplest way to move that class toward its Ripple Tide gate.
Protecting the weapons you are levelling
The Stash at your Forward Operating Base starts with room for 40 items and 12 weapons, with more weapon space coming from 3D Printer upgrades and DMZ level rewards. Twelve slots will not hold a full arsenal early on. That is one reason Weapon Manuals matter: once a Manual is extracted, you can buy that base weapon again whenever you need it instead of storing a spare.
Secure Slots are the second tool. Upgraded backpacks such as the Medium Backpack, craftable from DMZ level 2, have Secure Slots that keep their contents if you fail to exfil. Activision has not said whether a weapon fits in one, so treat them as protection for small, hard-to-replace items. The Vault Edition kit also lists two Weapon Insurance Contracts, which Activision has not explained yet.
Attachments raise the stakes. In the Gunsmith, each extra attachment slot costs more DMZ Cash than the last, and everything on the gun goes with it on a failed run. If a challenge does not need attachments, a lighter build puts less DMZ Cash at risk on every deployment.
Operators add a third layer. Each Active Duty Operator keeps their own Backpack and Loadout, and you start with two slots, or three with the Vault Edition. An Operator who dies goes MIA and, if recovered with DMZ Cash, returns without their gear. The DMZ operators guide and the FOB guide cover both systems in depth.
Which DMZ runs suit the Helio camo grind
Activision offers three deployment types: Story Missions, Dynamic Operations and Free Roam. Dynamic Operations pay DMZ Cash and XP, and each completed Operation gives your squad a Supply Drop of increasing rarity. That cash is what funds replacement weapons and attachments during a long grind.
Free Roam has no mission attached, which leaves the whole run for challenge work and Manual hunting. A ground infil is free, while vehicle, helicopter and cargo plane infils cost between 5,000 and 100,000 DMZ Cash, money that could otherwise rebuy a lost weapon.
Manual hunting pays for itself. Activision says Weapon Manuals, like Recipes, are consumed at exfil and always pay out 5,000 DMZ Cash, about what its example base M4 costs in the Gunsmith. A summary of Infinity Ward's AMA says the studio pointed to military containers and safes as good places to find them.
Hajin's threat system also sets a rhythm. Enemy reinforcements escalate as you draw attention, so shorter runs that end in an exfil before the response peaks protect the gun you are levelling better than staying until the zone turns on you.

Solo or squad for the Helio camo grind
Activision built DMZ for both. Squad Fill drops you in with two other allied players, and squads can share guns: one player can carry an extra weapon in a Weapon Backpack and drop it for a teammate. A squad can also revive a downed Operator, which keeps the weapon you are levelling in play.
Solo play gives full control over pace and risk. The Stealth Meter, which warns you before AI enemies spot you, is designed to help solo players in particular. A summary of Infinity Ward's AMA also notes that FOB upgrades stay personal in a party, so joining a friend with a developed base does not hand you their upgrades.
There is no confirmed answer on which is faster, because it depends on challenge wording that has not been published. If DMZ challenges count AI kills, a squad's extra firepower helps clear patrols safely. How kill credit is shared inside a squad has not been confirmed.

A realistic way to think about the time
Instead of hours, think in phases. First comes base Camo Track progress in whichever mode you are fastest. Second, Manual hunting and early Chiral challenges as DMZ levels open the Gunsmith. Third, class-by-class Ripple Tide work. Last come the final weapons standing between you and the Helio camo, which tend to be the ones you have been putting off.
DMZ Early Access, from October 20 for digital pre-orders, is the earliest anyone can start. The MW4 DMZ access guide covers editions and dates. Activision's blogs do not confirm that camo challenges are active during Early Access, although a summary of Infinity Ward's AMA reports that the full camo grind will be.
If you would rather hand the DMZ mastery track to someone else, a Helio camo unlock is listed for after launch. The store's Modern Warfare 4 listings are on the Modern Warfare 4 hub.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the Helio camo grind take?
There is no reliable figure before launch. The DMZ challenge counts are unpublished, Infinity Ward has not shared how DMZ XP rates compare with Multiplayer, and it is unknown whether progress survives a failed extraction. Plan in phases rather than hours.
Should I finish Camo Tracks in Multiplayer before DMZ?
It is a reasonable option. Activision says each weapon's Camo Track progresses across Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone, so base progress can be done where you are fastest. The DMZ mastery camos themselves are earned in DMZ.
Is the Helio camo grind faster solo or in a squad?
Not known yet. Squads add revives, shared weapons and firepower, while solo play gives control and the Stealth Meter. The answer depends on challenge wording that has not been published.
What should go in a Secure Slot during the grind?
Small items you cannot easily replace. Secure Slots keep their contents after a failed exfil, but Activision has not said that a weapon can go in one.
Does DMZ Early Access help with the Helio camo grind?
It opens on October 20 for digital pre-orders, three days before launch. A summary of Infinity Ward's AMA says the full camo grind will be progressible then, but Activision's blogs do not state it.
