Is MW4 DMZ Free? Price, Early Access and Editions

Is MW4 DMZ free? No. DMZ is part of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, which is a paid game, so you need to own it to play the mode. That is a change from the first DMZ, which arrived as a free-to-play mode alongside Warzone in the Modern Warfare II era.

If you are deciding whether the mode is worth buying into, the practical questions are when you can play, on what, and what each edition adds. This guide answers them using Activision's official posts and press coverage published ahead of the October 23, 2026 launch.

Is MW4 DMZ free to play?

DMZ is one of three modes in Modern Warfare 4, next to the Campaign and Multiplayer. Activision's October 15 post confirms the game launches as a standalone release: to play at launch you have to buy it, and it is not on Game Pass at launch. Activision says it will not join Game Pass until the holiday season a year after launch.

Press coverage agrees on the mode itself. TechTimes reported that DMZ launches as part of the full paid game for Modern Warfare 4 owners, and Pocket Tactics states plainly that you need to own the game to play it. Neither Activision nor Infinity Ward has announced a standalone or free-to-play version of the mode.

Warzone is a separate case. It stays free-to-play and begins integrating Modern Warfare 4 content from Season 1, but playing Warzone does not give you access to DMZ. No free trial weekend for Modern Warfare 4 has been announced either.

MW4 DMZ release date and early access

DMZ launches with Modern Warfare 4 on Friday, October 23, 2026. If you digitally pre-order or pre-purchase the game, DMZ early access opens on Tuesday, October 20, three days early. Campaign early access started earlier, on October 16.

Early access applies to the Standard Digital Edition and the Vault Edition on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2. Physical copies wait for launch day. Activision says early access covers "all of DMZ," and notes that start times depend on your time zone and dates are subject to change, so check your platform for the exact unlock.

Which platforms can play DMZ?

Modern Warfare 4 is on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC through Battle.net, Steam and the Xbox app, and Nintendo Switch 2. It is not on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. On Xbox, Xbox Play Anywhere covers console and PC with one purchase.

A few requirements are easy to miss. Microsoft's store listing says online multiplayer on Xbox needs a Game Pass Essential subscription, sold separately. PC players need TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot enabled, and a mobile phone number linked to your Activision account may be required. The mode runs on live servers with other players, so check your platform's online subscription rules before you buy.

Editions and price: what each one adds for DMZ

There are three editions: a Digital Standard Edition, a Physical Standard Edition for consoles only, and a digital-only Vault Edition.

Modern Warfare 4 editions and their DMZ-relevant content
EditionFormatUS priceWhat it adds
StandardDigital, all platforms$69.99Full game; early access when pre-ordered digitally
StandardPhysical, consoles onlyNot listedFull game; play from launch day
VaultDigital only$99.99Third Active Duty slot, Vault Edition Deployment Kit, Signature Weapon Collection blueprints
Vault upgradeDigital, same platform$30Turns a Digital Standard copy into the Vault Edition

The edition prices are the US figures on the Xbox store listing, and the $30 upgrade is Activision's US suggested price, so expect differences by region and platform. Digital pre-orders also come with a Hunter Killer Operator skin, the Gilded Pearl Camo Pack and the Inner Circuit weapon blueprint, and the Vault Edition adds two Operator packs and a season of BlackCell.

Returning players can get 10% off a digitally pre-ordered Vault Edition until October 23 if they own and have played a Call of Duty released in 2019 or later on the same platform account. That discount does not apply to upgrades.

What the Vault Edition DMZ Deployment Bonus includes

The editions page only promised "additional DMZ content via a Deployment Bonus at launch." Activision's October 9 FOB guide is where the mode-specific Vault perks are spelled out:

  • A third Active Duty Operator slot from the start, instead of two.
  • The Vault Edition Deployment Kit: two Weapon Insurance Contracts, two Operator Rescue Beacons, two Fulton Drop Markers, two Medium Backpacks and two 2-Plate Carriers.
  • One-time access to the Signature Weapon Collection blueprints in your DMZ inventory, with a discount to rebuy any you lose.

Most of this is a head start rather than a permanent edge. Medium Backpacks and 2-Plate vests are early 3D Printer recipes, and standard players can unlock a third Operator slot by leveling up. Activision has not yet explained how the Weapon Insurance Contracts or Rescue Beacons work. The MW4 DMZ operators guide explains why an extra slot matters.

Was there an MW4 DMZ beta?

No. The Modern Warfare 4 beta ran over two weekends: August 21 to 25 for pre-orders on Xbox, PlayStation and PC, then an open weekend from August 28 to September 1 that added Nintendo Switch 2. It focused on Multiplayer, plus a campaign mission and a Warzone map, and DMZ was not part of it. Windows Central noted in October that nobody had touched the mode yet.

When you see "DMZ Beta" online, it usually refers to the original mode from the Modern Warfare II era, which Infinity Ward ran as a years-long beta. For most players, the first chance to play the new version is early access on October 20 or launch on October 23.

How DMZ connects to the rest of Modern Warfare 4

The mode is not walled off from the rest of the game. Weapon levels are shared between Multiplayer and DMZ, so leveling a gun in one mode unlocks its attachments in the other. XP earned there also feeds your main 1 to 55 player level, although Multiplayer and Warzone XP does not count toward the separate 1 to 70 DMZ level.

Camos follow a similar pattern. Destructoid describes a shared camo grind across modes, followed by separate mastery camos for Multiplayer, Warzone and DMZ, with Chiral, Ripple Tide and Helio on the DMZ side. If you mainly play Multiplayer, time in extraction runs still moves your weapons forward, and the Helio camo guide explains the mode's own long-term camo goal.

Is DMZ a reason to buy Modern Warfare 4?

That depends on how you play. Based on what Activision has revealed, a few facts help frame the decision:

  • It is built for long-term progression: a persistent Stash, a base you upgrade and a DMZ level that runs to 70.
  • Solo play is supported, with a tourniquet self-revive and a Stealth Meter aimed at solo players, plus Squad Fill when you want teammates.
  • Other players are always a factor. No PvE-only playlist has been announced.
  • Progress is never fully wasted. XP still counts when a run fails, so your levels and base unlocks keep moving.
  • Losses are real. Failed exfils cost gear, and rescuing a developed Operator costs DMZ Cash.

If those fit your style, start with MW4 DMZ explained for how a run works and the MW4 DMZ items guide for what is at stake on each deployment. The store's Modern Warfare 4 listings are on the Modern Warfare 4 hub.
