Helio Camo MW4: The Final DMZ Mastery Camo Explained

Three rifles in red, black and gold, and red finishes under a DMZ Mode Mastery title naming Chiral, Ripple Tide and Helio

The Helio camo is the third and final DMZ mastery camo in MW4, the extraction mode's equivalent of a top-tier Multiplayer mastery camo. Activision revealed it on August 21, 2026, alongside Chiral and Ripple Tide, as part of a system with three mastery camos each for Multiplayer, DMZ and Call of Duty: Warzone.

Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23, 2026, and DMZ Early Access opens for digital pre-orders on October 20, so nobody has earned the Helio camo yet. This guide covers what has been revealed ahead of launch: what Activision has confirmed, what reputable outlets report about the unlock path, and which details are still open.

For the challenge mechanics inside a DMZ run, see the guide to how DMZ camo challenges work. For pacing, weapon order and risk, the Helio camo grind planner picks up where this page stops.

What the Helio camo is

The Helio camo is a mode-specific mastery reward. Activision's August 21 multiplayer blog says each weapon's Camo Track unlocks Mastery Camo Challenges, with three mastery camos to earn in each mode for nine in total. DMZ's three are Chiral, Ripple Tide and Helio, and Destructoid, NME and GamesRadar all list them in that order.

Activision's DMZ Mastery Camo Showcase video, embedded in the same blog, shows them in that sequence too. Chiral is a dark red and black pattern. Ripple Tide is black with gold streaks. The MW4 Helio camo closes the video as a glossy, bright metallic red finish, shown on a pump-action shotgun.

One practical DMZ detail: Activision's FOB guide says weapon camos and stickers cost no DMZ Cash to apply in the Gunsmith. Once a weapon has the Helio camo, putting it on a DMZ build will not eat into the in-game money you need for attachments.

Where the Helio camo sits among MW4's camos

Weapon camos in Modern Warfare 4 come from a few places. Some arrive through weapon levels: Activision's FOB guide says a weapon's progression path shows the attachments and weapon camos available at each level, and its example M4 has 72 levels. Above that, each weapon has a Camo Track of base camos, which Destructoid and GamesRadar both describe as the step to finish before mastery begins.

Mastery is the top layer: three camos per mode, plus a separate Prestige set. The Helio camo is the last DMZ step of that layer. It is not a single-weapon unlock like a base camo. On the reported structure, it marks DMZ mastery across the whole arsenal.

The Helio camo unlock path, step by step

Activision has confirmed the outline of the system. The individual challenge text and counts are not public yet, so the steps below separate what is official from what GamesRadar reported in its October 1 breakdown.

  1. Finish the weapon's Camo Track. This part is official. The Camo Track progresses in Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone, so time in any of the three counts. Weapon levels are also shared between Multiplayer and DMZ.
  2. Open the mastery challenges. Also official: completing a weapon's Camo Track unlocks its Mastery Camo Challenges, and DMZ has its own set.
  3. Earn Chiral on that weapon. Reported: GamesRadar describes Chiral as a challenge that appears once the weapon's base camo progression is done.
  4. Earn Ripple Tide class by class. Reported: Ripple Tide opens once every weapon in a class, such as every SMG, has Chiral.
  5. Reach the Helio camo. Reported: GamesRadar ties the Helio camo to having Ripple Tide on every gun in DMZ. It expects no extra challenge at this step, based on how earlier top-tier mastery camos worked, so treat that part as an expectation.

The scale is the real story. Activision lists 33 launch weapons: 24 primary, 8 secondary and 1 melee. The DMZ Gunsmith shows 32 of them across eight categories. Activision has not said whether the melee weapon or the four launchers count toward the Helio camo, or how weapons added after launch will be handled.

Why the Helio camo is tied to DMZ's item system

A bad Multiplayer match costs you nothing but time. In DMZ, every Helio camo attempt happens inside a deployment: the gun you are levelling sits in a Loadout that only comes home after a successful exfil, and buying a fresh copy in the Gunsmith first needs its Weapon Manual. Activision has not said whether camo challenge progress made during a failed run is kept, so assume a death can cost you the weapon you were working on. The DMZ camo challenges guide breaks down what a failed extraction costs, and the MW4 DMZ items guide covers what you keep and lose.

Helio camo vs Orion Reforged and Empyros

The Helio camo is one of three mode-final mastery camos. Orion Reforged tops the Multiplayer track and Empyros tops the Warzone track. All three share the same starting point, each weapon's Camo Track, but the mastery challenges above it belong to their own mode.

Activision describes the mastery camos as earned in each mode. Multiplayer time can speed up a weapon's shared Camo Track, but it is not expected to earn Chiral, Ripple Tide or the Helio camo for you. Collecting all three final camos means finishing three separate mastery tracks.

What is still unconfirmed about the Helio camo

Several details that will decide how hard the Helio camo is have not been published ahead of launch.

  • The exact DMZ challenge wording, and the kill or completion counts for Chiral and Ripple Tide.
  • Whether challenge progress survives a failed extraction.
  • Whether kills on AI combatants count, or only kills on rival Operators.
  • Which of the 33 launch weapons count toward the Helio camo, and how later weapons change the requirement.
  • Whether the Helio camo, once earned, can be equipped in Multiplayer and Warzone as well as DMZ.
  • Whether DMZ Early Access progress counts. A summary of Infinity Ward's October 9 Reddit AMA reports the studio saying the full camo grind can be progressed in Early Access, but Activision's own blogs do not state it.

Getting ready for the MW4 Helio camo

Nothing on the DMZ mastery track can be earned before Early Access opens on October 20. What you can do is decide how to split the work. Because the Camo Track is shared, one option is to push base progress in the mode you enjoy most, then take finished weapons into DMZ for the mastery challenges. Dates, editions and platforms are covered in the guide to whether MW4 DMZ is free.

If you would rather not grind it yourself, a Helio camo unlock is listed for after launch, once the DMZ mastery challenges are live. The store's Modern Warfare 4 listings are on the Modern Warfare 4 hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Helio camo in MW4?

It is the third and final DMZ mastery camo in Modern Warfare 4, revealed on August 21, 2026 with Chiral and Ripple Tide. In Activision's showcase video it is a glossy, bright metallic red finish.

Which camos come before the Helio camo?

Chiral comes first and Ripple Tide second. Both sit above each weapon's Camo Track, which has to be completed before the DMZ mastery challenges open.

How do you unlock the Helio camo?

Finish a weapon's Camo Track, earn Chiral on it, complete Chiral across a class to open Ripple Tide, then get Ripple Tide on every gun in DMZ. The class and all-weapon steps come from GamesRadar's reporting, and the exact challenges are not published yet.

Does the Helio camo count toward Orion Reforged or Empyros?

No. Each mode has its own mastery trio. The base Camo Track is shared, but Orion Reforged belongs to Multiplayer and Empyros belongs to Warzone.

Is the Helio camo harder than Orion Reforged?

Nobody can say until the challenge lists are public. The structural difference is that DMZ challenges happen inside extraction runs, where a failed exfil can cost the weapon you are levelling, while Multiplayer has no gear at risk.
