The Empyros camo is the final Warzone mastery camo in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. It closes a three-step chain that starts with Parallax and runs through Damascus Reforged. It is also the Warzone counterpart to Orion Reforged in Multiplayer and Helio in DMZ.
Activision revealed the Warzone set in a Warzone Mastery Camo Showcase at Call of Duty: NEXT on August 21, 2026. What it has not published yet is the challenge text that unlocks each camo. This guide covers what has been revealed ahead of the October 23, 2026 launch: where Empyros sits among the MW4 Warzone mastery camos, how the unlock path is expected to work, and when Warzone progress can begin.
Details that come from press reporting, or from how earlier Call of Duty games worked, are labelled that way. That keeps the confirmed parts separate from the expected ones.
What Is the Empyros Camo?
Modern Warfare 4 splits its top-end camos by mode. In Activision's words, the Weapon Camo journey spans Multiplayer, DMZ and Call of Duty: Warzone, with three Mastery Camos to earn in each mode for nine in total. Warzone's three are Parallax, Damascus Reforged and Empyros, and the press lists published after the reveal all put Empyros last.
GamesRadar's camo guide calls Empyros the ultimate prize for Warzone camo grinders and compares it to a mode completion reward. That framing is useful. Parallax is a single-weapon achievement, while Empyros is expected to reflect work across the whole Warzone arsenal.
Like every weapon camo, it is a cosmetic, so it changes nothing about how a weapon handles. What it shows is time and consistency in Warzone specifically, which is why it sits at the top of the Warzone track rather than the Multiplayer one.
The MW4 Warzone Mastery Camo Chain
The Warzone set unlocks in a fixed order: Parallax first, Damascus Reforged second and Empyros last. That is the order used by GamesRadar, Destructoid and NME. Damascus Reforged is the familiar name of the three. GamesRadar describes it as an animated remix of the Damascus camo from Modern Warfare (2019), which was a Multiplayer camo in that game and now moves to Warzone.

The table lines the Warzone chain up against the other two modes. All three follow the same three-step shape, but each set is earned in its own mode.
| Mode | First mastery camo | Second mastery camo | Final mastery camo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warzone | Parallax | Damascus Reforged | Empyros |
| Multiplayer | Mercurial Drift | Polyatomic Reforged | Orion Reforged |
| DMZ | Chiral | Ripple Tide | Helio |
How to Unlock Empyros, Step by Step
Activision has confirmed the first half of the path. GamesRadar has reported the rest, and it matches the pattern of recent Call of Duty games, but the in-game challenge text is not public yet. Here is the path as it currently stands.
- Progress the weapon's Camo Track. Each weapon has one Camo Track, and progress counts across Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone. This part is confirmed.
- Open its Mastery Camo Challenges. Completing that track unlocks the weapon's Mastery Camo Challenges. This part is also confirmed.
- Earn Parallax on the weapon in Warzone. Reported as the first Warzone step, available once the weapon's other camos are done.
- Earn Parallax across a whole weapon category. Reported as the gate for that category's Damascus Reforged challenges.
- Earn Damascus Reforged on every weapon. Reported as the requirement that unlocks Empyros.
Two parts of that last step are still open. The first is the weapon count. Activision lists 33 weapons at launch, made up of 24 primaries, 8 secondaries and 1 melee weapon. It has not said whether every one of them counts toward Empyros. Black Ops 7 used a fixed total of 30 weapons for its later Warzone tiers rather than a checklist of named guns, so a count is possible here too.
The second is whether Empyros needs a challenge of its own. In Black Ops 7, the final Warzone camo, Apocalypse, unlocked automatically once Absolute Zero was on 30 weapons. In Black Ops 6, the final Warzone camo, Abyss, still had its own per-weapon challenge. Until the list appears in-game, plan for either.
When Can You Start Working Toward Empyros?
Not on launch day. Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23, 2026, but Activision's announcement says Warzone integrates Modern Warfare 4 content and seasonal progression beginning in Season 1. The official roadmap posted on October 14 puts Season 1 on November 6, 2026, for both Modern Warfare 4 and Warzone.
Season 1 also brings two new Warzone maps. Zodiac is a Resurgence map built by Beenox, and Hajin is the DMZ map coming to Battle Royale. Season 1 is the first point at which MW4 weapons can earn Warzone mastery progress, on whichever maps are in rotation.

The gap before Season 1 is not wasted. Because the Camo Track is shared, base progress made in Multiplayer from October 23 counts toward the same weapon's track, and progress from DMZ early access (October 20, digital pre-orders) should too, although Activision has not explicitly said early access progress carries into launch. The MW4 Warzone camos guide covers what changes when Warzone integrates, including the Season 1 maps, the last-gen cut-off and what carries forward.
Why Empyros Is Earned Separately From Multiplayer
The shared part of the system is the base Camo Track. The mastery layer is split by mode, with three camos to earn in each, so the Warzone set has to be earned in Warzone. Multiplayer progress toward Orion Reforged does not move you toward Empyros.
That matters because Warzone challenges in recent games have been written around battle royale conditions. In Black Ops 7, the Warzone tiers asked for 3 kills in a single match five times, 5 kills without dying five times, and 10 eliminations while in the Top 10. MW4's versions are unpublished, but the same pacing problem applies: fewer fights per match than a respawn lobby. The guide to MW4 Warzone camo challenges covers those challenge types in detail.
There is a carry-forward angle as well. Activision corrected its Season 1 Warzone post to say that weapon camos from Modern Warfare II, Modern Warfare III, Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 will not be available in Warzone's Modern Warfare 4 chapter. Operators, Operator Skins and Weapon Blueprints do carry forward. Older mastery camos stay behind, which makes this Warzone set the new top-end collection for the chapter.
Empyros vs Orion Reforged vs Helio
Each mode's final camo is reported to follow the same logic: a per-weapon first step, a category-wide second step and an arsenal-wide final step. GamesRadar describes Orion Reforged as needing Polyatomic Reforged on every base-game weapon, and Helio as needing Ripple Tide on every gun in DMZ.
The difference is where the work happens. Orion Reforged is earned in Multiplayer, which is playable from launch day. Helio is earned in DMZ, so its progress comes from deployments into Hajin rather than standard matches. Empyros is earned in Warzone, which has the latest start of the three because it waits for Season 1.
Nobody can say yet which of the three will be hardest, because Activision has not published the mastery challenge text for any mode. Any ranking published before Season 1 is a guess.
What to Check Once Season 1 Is Live
When Warzone integrates on November 6, a few minutes in the camo menu will settle most of the open questions. Check these before committing to a long grind:
- The Parallax challenge text for one weapon in each category.
- The exact requirement listed under Damascus Reforged and Empyros, including any weapon count.
- Whether the challenge description names specific Warzone modes.
- Whether progress moves after a single match, before you spend an evening on it.
For time and planning, the Empyros camo grind guide covers mode choice, weapon order and how to avoid wasted progress.
For players who would rather not grind it themselves, the Modern Warfare 4 hub lists an Empyros unlock, though it stays unavailable until the Warzone mastery challenges go live.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Empyros camo in MW4?
Empyros is the third and final Warzone mastery camo in Modern Warfare 4, after Parallax and Damascus Reforged. Activision revealed it at Call of Duty: NEXT on August 21, 2026, as one of nine mode mastery camos, three each for Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone.
How do you unlock Empyros?
Progress a weapon's shared Camo Track to open its Mastery Camo Challenges, then work through the Warzone chain. Press reporting says Parallax is earned per weapon, Damascus Reforged after Parallax across a category, and Empyros after Damascus Reforged on every weapon. The exact challenge text has not been published.
Can you earn Empyros by playing Multiplayer or DMZ?
Only partly. Multiplayer and DMZ progress counts toward each weapon's shared Camo Track, but the mastery camos are earned per mode, so the Warzone set needs Warzone play.
When does the Empyros challenge go live?
Not before Season 1. The roadmap dates Warzone's Modern Warfare 4 integration to November 6, 2026, the first point at which MW4 weapons can earn Warzone mastery progress. Shared track progress can begin earlier, in Multiplayer from October 23, or in DMZ early access from October 20 for digital pre-orders if early access progress carries over, as an Infinity Ward AMA summary reports.
Is Damascus Reforged the same as the Modern Warfare 2019 Damascus?
It is a remix rather than a copy. GamesRadar describes Damascus Reforged as an animated version of the Modern Warfare (2019) Damascus, which was a Multiplayer camo in that game and is now the middle step of the MW4 Warzone chain.
