MW4 Warzone camos are built on a different system from the one Black Ops 7 players know. Modern Warfare 4 gives each weapon a single Camo Track that progresses across Multiplayer, DMZ and Call of Duty: Warzone. That track then opens separate mastery camos for each mode, three of them in Warzone.
None of the Warzone challenges are playable yet. Warzone only takes on Modern Warfare 4 weapons and progression with Season 1, which the official roadmap dates to November 6, 2026, two weeks after the October 23 launch. This guide covers what has been confirmed about the structure, what Warzone camo challenges looked like in the last two games, and which challenge types are worth planning around. Anything inferred from earlier games is labelled.
How MW4 Warzone Camos Fit the Shared Camo Track
Activision's Call of Duty: NEXT recap describes the system in two sentences. The Weapon Camo journey spans Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone. Progressing each weapon's Camo Track across all three unlocks its Mastery Camo Challenges, with three Mastery Camos to earn in each mode.
That is a real change from Black Ops 6. There, each weapon started with nine Military camos per mode. For most weapons, Warzone progress came from eliminations, Multiplayer from headshots and Zombies from critical kills. In MW4 the base layer is one shared track per weapon, so time in Multiplayer or DMZ counts toward the same track that opens a weapon's Warzone camo challenges.
In practice, that splits Warzone camo progress into two parts:
- Shared: each weapon's base Camo Track, progressed in any of the three modes.
- Warzone only: the three Warzone mastery camos, Parallax, Damascus Reforged and Empyros.
When Warzone Camo Challenges Go Live
Activision's announcement says that beginning in Season 1, Warzone will integrate Modern Warfare 4 content and seasonal progression as a connected experience between both titles. The official roadmap puts Season 1 on November 6 for both games. Dexerto's integration guide adds that all of Modern Warfare 4's weapons and Operators come to Warzone in that update, which is when MW4 weapons can start earning Warzone mastery progress.

Season 1 is also a platform cut-off. Warzone on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One stops being playable from the start of Season 1, so the MW4-era Warzone camo grind will not be available on last-generation consoles.
Old camos will not come with you either. Activision corrected its September 24 Warzone post to say that weapon camos from Modern Warfare II, Modern Warfare III, Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 will not be available in Warzone's MW4 chapter. Operators, Operator Skins and Weapon Blueprints from those games remain, and every legacy weapon gets a five-attachment version unlockable through the Armory.

The Three Warzone Mastery Tiers
The Warzone mastery camos are Parallax, Damascus Reforged and Empyros, in that order. GamesRadar reports that Parallax is earned per weapon after its other camos, that Damascus Reforged opens once Parallax is on every weapon in a category, and that Empyros follows Damascus Reforged on every weapon. NME notes that the exact challenges have not been revealed.
MW4 also trims the ladder. Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 each had four Warzone mastery camos, while Activision lists three per mode in Modern Warfare 4. The full step-by-step path, and how Empyros compares with the other modes' final camos, is in the Empyros camo guide.
What Warzone Camo Challenges Looked Like Before MW4
The last two games are the best guide to what Warzone challenge text tends to ask for. The table below is previous-game context, not MW4 information. Where requirements varied by weapon class, it uses the assault rifle version.
| Step | Black Ops 6 Warzone | Black Ops 7 Warzone |
|---|---|---|
| Before mastery | Nine Military camos earned through eliminations, then two weapon-specific Special challenges | All Warzone Military and Special camo challenges for that weapon |
| Mastery 1 | Gold Tiger: 5 kills while you are a Most Wanted Contract target | Golden Damascus: 3 kills in a single match, 5 times |
| Mastery 2 | King's Ransom: Gold Tiger on the whole category, then 3 kills without dying, 5 times | Starglass: Golden Damascus on every weapon of that type, then 5 kills without dying, 5 times |
| Mastery 3 | Catalyst: King's Ransom on 33 weapons, then kill 5 enemies hit by a Flashbang, Stun or Shock Charge | Absolute Zero: Starglass on 30 weapons, then 10 eliminations while in the Top 10 |
| Final | Abyss: after Catalyst, 5 kills without dying, 2 times | Apocalypse: Absolute Zero on 30 weapons, unlocks automatically |
Two patterns stand out. Both games leaned on survival conditions, and PC Gamer summed up Black Ops 7's Warzone set as primarily focused on getting multiple kills without dying. Both also used weapon-count gates for the later tiers: 33 weapons in Black Ops 6 and 30 in Black Ops 7.
Why Warzone Challenges Play Differently From Multiplayer
Multiplayer respawns you straight back into a small map. Battle royale does neither. Large maps mean long stretches of looting and rotating, so a challenge that needs five kills in one life depends on finding enough fights before a single mistake resets the count.
Resurgence softens that. The official MW4 beta guide describes Resurgence on Zodiac as a 44-player mode where you stay alive while teammates redeploy, and eliminations and Contracts shorten their return timer. Battle Royale on a big map such as Hajin is the slower of the two.
Per-match challenges also reset every game. Black Ops 7's Golden Damascus asked for 3 kills in a single match five times, so a match that ends on two kills does not count toward it.
The Challenge Types Most Likely to Slow You Down
MW4's Warzone challenge text is unpublished, so this section is based on the last two games. If similar conditions return, these are the ones to plan around.
Kills without dying
Black Ops 6's King's Ransom and Black Ops 7's Starglass both asked for several kills inside one life, repeated five times. They punish hot drops and third-party fights. Picking engagements deliberately works better than chasing every gunshot on the map.
Several kills in one match
Per-match totals like Golden Damascus are easier when one death does not end your match. That points toward Resurgence, where you redeploy while a teammate stays alive.
Placement conditions
Black Ops 7's Absolute Zero only counted eliminations made while in the Top 10. Kills before that point did nothing for the challenge, so staying in the match came first.
Weapon-count gates
Later tiers in both games depended on how many weapons had the previous camo. MW4 launches with 33 weapons, and Empyros is reported to need Damascus Reforged on every weapon, so the slowest weapon in each class decides how fast the next tier opens.
Which Warzone Modes Will Count?
Activision has not said which Warzone playlists will count toward camo challenges. What is confirmed is the Season 1 map list in the NEXT recap: Zodiac for Resurgence and Hajin for Battle Royale.
Questions about casual or bot-filled playlists come up often, and the honest answer for MW4 is that nobody knows yet. Read the challenge description once Season 1 is live, then confirm the counter moves after one match before building a routine around a playlist. Mode choice and session planning are covered in the Empyros camo grind guide.
How to Prepare Before Season 1
The shared Camo Track means the weeks between launch and November 6 can still be useful:
- Push base camo progress on the weapons you expect to use in Warzone, through Multiplayer from October 23 or, if early access progress carries over as Infinity Ward has reportedly said, DMZ early access from October 20.
- Keep a simple list of which weapons have finished their track, sorted by category, since categories reportedly gate Damascus Reforged.
- Study Zodiac footage from the beta, since it is one of the two Season 1 maps.
- Read the Multiplayer camo challenges and DMZ camo challenges breakdowns, since the base track is shared.
For players who would rather hand off the Warzone set, the Modern Warfare 4 hub lists an Empyros unlock, though it stays unavailable until the Warzone mastery challenges go live.
Frequently Asked Questions
When do MW4 Warzone camos unlock?
Warzone takes on Modern Warfare 4 content and seasonal progression with Season 1, which the official roadmap dates to November 6, 2026. Base Camo Track progress can start earlier in Multiplayer and DMZ, but Warzone mastery progress needs MW4 weapons in Warzone.
Do Multiplayer and DMZ kills count toward Warzone camos?
They count toward each weapon's shared Camo Track, which unlocks its Mastery Camo Challenges. The Warzone mastery camos themselves are a separate per-mode set, so they are earned in Warzone.
Do my Black Ops 7 camos carry over to MW4 Warzone?
No. Activision corrected its Season 1 Warzone post to say legacy weapon camos will not be available in Warzone's Modern Warfare 4 chapter. Operators, Operator Skins and Weapon Blueprints from MW2, MW3, Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 do carry forward.
Which Warzone modes count for MW4 camo challenges?
That is not confirmed yet. Season 1 brings Zodiac for Resurgence and Hajin for Battle Royale, but Activision has not listed which playlists count. Check the challenge text in-game and confirm progress after one match.
How many Warzone mastery camos does MW4 have?
Three: Parallax, Damascus Reforged and Empyros. Activision lists three mastery camos per mode, nine across Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone, down from the four Warzone mastery camos in Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7.
