MW4 Camo Challenges: Multiplayer Tiers Explained

MW4 camo challenges are the weapon tasks that take you from plain base camos to the three Multiplayer mastery camos in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. Infinity Ward has revealed the structure ahead of the October 23, 2026 launch. It has not published the exact challenge text, kill counts or the full list of base camos.

This guide separates what Activision has confirmed from what has only been reported. It explains how the Multiplayer tiers gate each other, and it uses earlier Modern Warfare games as clearly labelled context where MW4 details are still missing. The store's Modern Warfare 4 listings are on the Modern Warfare 4 hub.

What Activision has confirmed about MW4 camo challenges

Three official statements anchor everything else. First, the Call of Duty: NEXT recap from August 21, 2026 says the weapon camo journey spans Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone. You progress each weapon's Camo Track across all three experiences to unlock its Mastery Camo Challenges, with three mastery camos per mode and nine in total.

Second, Activision's DMZ guide from October 9 describes each weapon's Progression menu. It shows the full levelling path, with attachment unlocks and weapon camos listed at the levels where they appear. Its example M4 has 72 levels. Weapon progression is global, so levels earned in Multiplayer and DMZ count toward the same gun.

Third, the launch arsenal is 33 weapons: 24 primaries, 8 secondaries and 1 melee weapon. Destructoid's coverage quotes the reveal's description of a "shared camo grind", where "no matter what mode you're playing, you're grinding those camos". In other words, base camo progress counts whichever of the three modes you play.

Tier one: the weapon Camo Track

The first layer is each weapon's own Camo Track, the base camos you clear before any mastery challenge appears. Activision's description of the Progression menu shows that at least part of this track is tied to weapon level. Camos are listed at the levels where they unlock. How many base camos each gun has, and which ones need a separate challenge rather than a level, has not been published.

Two official details are designed to cut repetitive levelling. Shared Attachments unlock once across every compatible weapon, and if a level would hand you an attachment you already own, you get a Bonus Level Up instead. Each weapon's Apex Attachment arrives as the final reward once you complete all of its levels.

Tier two: the three Multiplayer mastery camos

Once a weapon's Camo Track is done, its Multiplayer mastery challenges begin. The reveal coverage names three mastery camos, and GamesRadar's breakdown from October 1 gives each one a different scope.

Mercurial Drift: one weapon at a time

GamesRadar reports that unlocking every base camo for a weapon gives you the challenge for Mercurial Drift on that weapon. It is the per-weapon step, so you can earn it on your favourite gun long before you touch the rest of the arsenal.

Polyatomic Reforged: one class at a time

GamesRadar reports that Polyatomic Reforged challenges open for a class only after Mercurial Drift is earned on every weapon in that class, such as all assault rifles or all sniper rifles. If that holds, this is where progress stops being about one gun: a single unfinished weapon keeps every Polyatomic Reforged challenge in its class locked.

Orion Reforged: the whole arsenal

Orion Reforged is the finishing line. It is reported to unlock after Polyatomic Reforged is earned on every base game weapon. The Orion Reforged camo guide covers what that final camo is and how it compares with Empyros in Warzone and Helio in DMZ.

How weapon-class completion gates the next camo

The class gate is the part of the structure that shapes your playtime most. Under the reported rules, you cannot start Polyatomic Reforged on any SMG until every SMG has Mercurial Drift. The weakest weapon in each class decides when that class moves on, not the strongest.

Activision's official Beta unlock list shows how wide the classes are, with assault rifles, SMGs, shotguns, LMGs, marksman rifles, sniper rifles, pistols and launchers all represented. Which classes hold which of the 33 launch weapons is something to confirm in game. For the final step, GamesRadar notes that post-launch weapons should let you skip a few launch guns, as long as you still reach the same overall count.

In practice, it makes sense to finish one class before spreading out. A class you dislike will hold its own Polyatomic Reforged challenges back until you clear it. Every class has to get there before the final camo opens.

What the challenges may ask for: previous-game context

Until the challenge text is visible, the best guide is how Infinity Ward handled earlier Modern Warfare games. Treat this section as history, not as a preview of MW4's requirements.

  • Modern Warfare (2019): Charlie INTEL reported that unlocking all of a weapon's camos earned Gold. Gold on every weapon in a class earned Platinum, and Platinum on every weapon earned Damascus.
  • Modern Warfare II (2022): each Gunsmith weapon had four base camo challenges, the first a kill count and the rest unlocked at weapon levels. Gold came next, then Platinum gated by class, Polyatomic gated by Platinum on 51 weapons, and Orion gated by Polyatomic on 51 weapons, per Charlie INTEL.
  • Challenge types: Modern Warfare II's Gold challenge asked for kills without dying. Activision also said each weapon's Polyatomic challenge differed, citing the M4 and the RPG-7 as an example. PC Gamer noted that Orion had no challenge of its own.

The pattern is consistent: a per-weapon tier, a class tier, then an arsenal tier. MW4's reported structure keeps that shape, with one change in the base layer, which is now shared across three modes. If you see challenge lists with exact numbers before launch, check whether they cite Activision. As of the reveal coverage, the specific challenges had not been published.

MW4 camos that do not come from weapon challenges

Not every MW4 camo sits on the mastery ladder. Digital pre-orders include the Gilded Pearl Camo Pack. Its Moonlit Pearl camo unlocked straight away in Black Ops 7. Gilded Ruin comes from a Black Ops 7 challenge of 5,000 Skulls, with serial-numbered versions for the first 100,000 players. Activision says players who earned them can put both on any MW4 weapon from October 23.

The Prestige set is separate too. Activision showed a Prestige Mastery Camo Showcase at NEXT, and GamesRadar lists four Pyroclast variants tied to Prestige progression. Older camos are a different story. Activision clarified in September that weapon camos from earlier games will not carry forward into the Modern Warfare 4 version of Warzone, as Dexerto reported.

How to read the challenges on October 23

The first session is the best time to set your plan, before any progress is at stake:

  • Open a weapon's Progression menu and note which camos come from levels and which need a challenge.
  • Read the Mercurial Drift challenge for each class you plan to grind, so you know which ones are slow.
  • Check whether Orion Reforged needs its own challenge or unlocks automatically, as Orion did in Modern Warfare II.
  • Confirm which weapons count toward the class and arsenal totals, especially launchers and the melee weapon.
  • Watch your progress bars after early matches. In December 2022, Infinity Ward acknowledged camo challenges not tracking for some Modern Warfare II players, according to Charlie INTEL.

For time estimates and a suggested weapon order, the MW4 camo grind planning guide picks up where this one ends. DMZ and Warzone have their own mastery ladders, covered in the DMZ camo challenges guide and the Warzone camo guide. If you would rather not grind the Multiplayer ladder yourself, the Orion Reforged camo page describes that option for after launch.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the MW4 camo challenges?

They are weapon tasks that progress each gun's Camo Track and then its mastery camos. Activision has confirmed that the Camo Track is shared across Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone, with three mastery camos per mode, but it has not published the exact challenge text ahead of launch.

What order do the MW4 Multiplayer mastery camos unlock in?

Mercurial Drift comes first, then Polyatomic Reforged, then Orion Reforged, as named in the Call of Duty: NEXT reveal coverage. GamesRadar reports that the second step opens per class and the final step after the whole base arsenal.

Do MW4 camo challenges carry across modes?

The base Camo Track does. Activision says you progress it across Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone, and weapon levels are global between Multiplayer and DMZ. The mastery camos themselves are earned separately in each mode.

Has Activision revealed the full MW4 camo challenge list?

Not ahead of launch. GamesRadar and NME both noted that the specific challenges had not been revealed, so any list with exact kill counts should be treated as unconfirmed until it matches the in-game text on October 23.

Are there Gold and Platinum camos in MW4?

Activision's reveal named the mode mastery camos and a Prestige set, not Gold or Platinum tiers. Gold and Platinum were Modern Warfare II's first two mastery camos, so check the in-game camo menu at launch rather than assuming the old names return.

When do MW4 camo challenges go live?

Multiplayer camo challenges arrive with the full launch on October 23, 2026. Digital pre-order players can start earning weapon levels in DMZ Early Access from October 20, since weapon progression is shared between DMZ and Multiplayer, although Activision has not explicitly said early access progress carries into launch.
