MW4 Gold Camo: How It Unlocks and What It Gates

Gold is the first camo in Modern Warfare 4 that you actually have to earn with a challenge rather than with a weapon level, and it is the gate on everything above it. No Gold means no Platinum, no Harmonic Break, no Divergence, and no mastery camo on that weapon in any mode. It is the smallest step in the Completionist tier and the one that decides whether the rest of the ladder is open to you.

Modern Warfare 4 launches on Friday 23 October 2026, so nobody has ground Gold on a live build yet. What is confirmed is where Gold sits and what it gates. What is not confirmed is the challenge itself - Activision has not published the per-weapon or per-class requirements as of 19 October 2026, and the specific figures circulating online are third-party estimates taken from beta builds.

This page covers where Gold sits in the ladder, what you have to clear before it even appears, what it unlocks further up, how to think about per-weapon versus per-class work, and the mistakes that cost people the most time in previous titles.

Where Gold sits in the MW4 camo ladder

MW4 runs five camo tiers per weapon. Military comes first - eight camos tied to weapon level, no challenges. Special follows with three more. Then comes the Completionist tier, four camos deep and strictly ordered: Gold, Platinum, Harmonic Break, Divergence. Above that sits the Mastery tier with three camos per mode, and above that the four Pyroclast Prestige camos.

Gold is therefore camo twelve on a weapon, not camo one. That trips people up, because in casual conversation Gold is treated as the start of the grind. In sequence terms it is the start of the challenge-based grind, but you have eleven unlocks of work behind you before you see it. The full ladder is laid out in our MW4 camo system explained page.

What you clear before Gold appears

Two things. First the eight Military camos, which come from weapon level. Second the three Special camos, which unlock once Military is complete. Only then does the Completionist tier become visible on that weapon, with Gold as its first entry.

The good news is that this preamble is pooled across modes. Based on what was shown at Call of Duty: NEXT in August, each weapon has one shared Camo Track that fills from Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone alike, and Activision has confirmed that DMZ progression contributes to multiplayer progression. So the eleven unlocks before Gold can be done wherever you most enjoy playing - you are not forced into Multiplayer to set up a Warzone camo run.

That makes the pre-Gold stage an XP problem rather than a camo problem. Weapon levelling was playable in the beta and behaves predictably, which is why levelling advice is reliable in a way challenge advice is not right now. If that is the part you want compressed, maxing weapon levels fast deals with it directly.

What Gold gates

Everything. The Completionist tiers are sequential, so Gold is a hard prerequisite for Platinum, which is a prerequisite for Harmonic Break, which is a prerequisite for Divergence. And because the Mastery tier sits above the completed Completionist chain, Gold is also indirectly a prerequisite for Mercurial Drift, Polyatomic Reforged and Orion Reforged in Multiplayer, Parallax, Damascus Reforged and Empyros in Warzone, and Chiral, Ripple Tide and Helio in DMZ.

That is worth sitting with before you start. A player who Golds twenty-five weapons and stops has twenty-five Gold guns; a player who takes four weapons all the way through has a mastery camo. The second outcome is rarer and takes less total time, which is the most useful thing to understand about this system. Our mastery camos page covers the top of that chain.

Per-weapon or per-class: why the distinction matters

In recent Call of Duty titles, Gold has been a per-weapon challenge while the tier above it has been class-wide - you Gold every weapon in a class before Platinum opens on any of them. Multiple MW4 guides describe the same arrangement, with Gold as a per-weapon task and the requirements going class-wide from Platinum upward. That matches series precedent, but it is not something Activision has published, so treat it as the likely shape rather than a confirmed rule.

If it holds, it changes your weapon order completely. Gold on a gun you dislike is wasted effort unless you intend to finish its whole class. The table below shows how that reasoning plays out.

DecisionIf Gold is per-weapon and Platinum is class-widePractical consequence
Gold one favourite gunFine - self-contained, no class obligationFastest visible reward, dead end for the ladder
Gold three guns in three classesThree Golds, zero Platinum progressFeels productive, unlocks nothing above Gold
Gold every gun in one classOpens Platinum for that classThe only route that moves you up a tier
Pick the class with the fewest weaponsFewest Golds needed to open PlatinumLowest-cost first tier clear - verify counts in game
Start before Season 1 on 6 NovClass rosters are at their smallestNew weapons may enlarge class requirements later

That last row is the one people miss. There are 33 launch weapons including one melee, and Season 1 arrives on 6 November. If a class-wide requirement counts the current roster, finishing a class before it grows is simply less work.

Realistic time expectations

Here is where honesty beats a confident number. Nobody can tell you how long Gold takes in MW4, because the challenge is not public. Anyone quoting "about forty minutes per gun" is extrapolating from a different game.

What can be said usefully is the shape of the cost. The eleven unlocks before Gold are driven by weapon XP, which scales with engagements per minute - objective modes in Multiplayer, or DMZ where progression also counts. The Gold challenge itself has historically been a single per-weapon task, completable in a session or two of focused play. The expensive part has never been Gold on one gun; it has been Gold on every gun in a class, which multiplies that task by the class roster.

So budget by class, not by weapon, and re-budget on 23 October when you can read the real challenge text. If your plan only survives when the leaked figure is right, it is not a plan.

Choosing which weapons to Gold first

Pick by three filters in this order: a class you will finish, guns you genuinely like using, and current performance. Class first, because of the class-wide gate above Gold. Enjoyment second, because this is a long grind and nothing kills it faster than forcing a weapon you hate. Performance last, and loosely.

On performance, be careful with tier lists. Beta data put the M4 as the consensus top assault rifle at around 59% of loadouts, with the ISO Nightshade the standout SMG at roughly 13% and the close-quarters favourite. The Kastov 762 hit hard with more recoil, the Rezi 12 was the best shotgun, and sources disagreed sharply on the KG-7 Vulcan and Signal 50 snipers. All of that is beta balance and will change at launch, so use it as a hint about which guns feel good rather than as a ranking. Our best guns page tracks the live meta instead.

Common mistakes

Four, in rough order of how much time they waste. Scattering Gold across classes, which produces a nice-looking armory and no tier progress. Planning around a leaked requirement instead of the in-game challenge text. Assuming Black Ops 7 progress carries over - it does not, rank starts fresh and caps at 55 before prestige opens. And prestiging mid-grind without reading the two paths first: MW4's Classic prestige resets your unlocks in exchange for a 20% XP bonus and a Permanent Unlock Token, while Regular restarts you at level 1 but keeps everything. Losing access to a weapon halfway through a class-wide Gold run is an avoidable self-inflicted wound. If you would rather have a class handled for you, that is what our Modern Warfare 4 services are for.

If you are running several weapons at once, it is worth reading how to track camo progress in MW4 before you start, because the order you clear weapons in is easier to plan than to undo.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you unlock Gold camo in MW4?

Clear the eight Military camos on a weapon, which come from weapon level, then the three Special camos. That opens the Completionist tier, and Gold is its first entry with its own challenge. The exact Gold challenge has not been published by Activision as of 19 October 2026.

Is Gold camo per weapon or per class in MW4?

Multiple guides describe Gold as per weapon, with the requirements turning class-wide from Platinum upward. That matches how recent Call of Duty titles worked, but Activision has not confirmed it for MW4, so verify it against the challenge text in game at launch.

How long does Gold camo take in MW4?

There is no honest answer yet, because the challenge is unpublished. Historically Gold on a single weapon has been a session or two of focused play, with the real cost being Gold on every weapon in a class. Budget by class rather than by gun, and recalculate once you can read the real requirement.

Can I earn Gold in DMZ or Warzone instead of Multiplayer?

The per-weapon Camo Track is shared across Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone, so the work leading up to and including the Completionist tier accumulates from any of them. Only the mastery camos above that tier are mode-specific, three per mode.

Should I Gold a weapon I do not enjoy using?

Only if you intend to finish its whole class. If the class-wide gate above Gold behaves as expected, a single Gold on a gun you will not touch again contributes nothing to the tier above it. Pick the class first, then the weapons inside it.
