If your Modern Warfare 4 camos are greyed out, nothing is broken - the camo system is a locked ladder, and each tier only appears once you have cleared the one below it. This page explains why each tier is locked, the exact order they open in, and the two things that trip up new players most: the shared track and the Divergence gate.
Camos unlock in a fixed order
Every weapon runs the same chain, and you cannot skip ahead. Military camos come from weapon level, so they are locked until the gun levels up. Special camos are locked until you complete short challenges. Gold is locked until the Special camos are done, Platinum until you Gold enough of the class, Harmonic Break until Platinum, and Divergence until Harmonic Break is cleared across the roster. The mastery camos sit above all of that and stay greyed out until Divergence is earned.

The two things that confuse people most
First, the shared track. Everything up to Divergence fills one Camo Track that counts in Multiplayer, Warzone and DMZ alike - so a camo can look "stuck" when you are actually making progress in a different mode than you expect. Second, the Divergence gate. The nine mastery camos are hard-locked behind Divergence, so if the whole mastery row is greyed out, that is why: you have not finished the 33 Harmonic Break challenges yet.
If the mastery row is locked and you want it open
The fastest way to get the mastery camos to appear is to clear the gate. If you would rather not grind Harmonic Break on all 33 weapons yourself, the Divergence service unlocks exactly that - the Completionist camo that opens the Mastery tier - after which you can chase Orion Reforged, Empyros or Helio yourself, or have those completed too. If your guns are simply under-levelled, a Max Weapon Level boost or Platinum service clears the lower locks. It is all on the Modern Warfare 4 services hub.
Camos that are not part of the ladder
A few MW4 camos are locked for a different reason entirely: they come from bundles, pre-orders or event rewards, not the Camo Track. If a camo will not unlock no matter how much you grind, check whether it is actually a store or event item rather than a challenge camo - those never appear in the weapon's progression at all. Camo not unlocking? A quick checklist
If a camo will not unlock, run through this before assuming anything is broken. Is the weapon high enough level - Military camos are level rewards, so a low-level gun simply has not reached them yet? Have you finished the weapon's Special challenges, which is what unlocks Gold? For a class camo like Platinum, have you Golded enough of the class? For the mastery row, have you earned Divergence across the roster, since the whole tier is locked until you do? And are you checking the right mode - progress up to Divergence is shared, but the mastery camos only advance in their own mode? Nine times out of ten, a "stuck" camo is simply a tier you have not reached yet rather than a bug.
Locked vs bugged: how to tell
A genuinely locked camo shows a clear requirement on its challenge card - a level, a challenge, or a higher tier. A bugged camo would show its requirement as met but not award the camo, which is rare. If a camo appears met but unearned, back out to the main menu and back in to force a progress refresh, confirm you are on the account and platform where you did the work, and give shared-track progress a moment to sync across modes. If it still will not pop, it is far more often a store or event camo that was never part of the Camo Track - check that before reporting a bug. Why are my MW4 mastery camos locked?
The entire mastery row is gated behind Divergence, the final Completionist camo. Until you finish the 33 Harmonic Break challenges and earn Divergence, the mastery camos stay greyed out and their challenges are not active.
Why is Gold locked on my weapon?
Gold unlocks only after you complete that weapon's Special camo challenges. If Gold is greyed out, you still have one or more Special challenges left on that specific gun.
Do camos unlock faster in a specific mode?
Up to Divergence, progress is shared across modes, so play wherever you get the most engagements - usually Multiplayer. Only the final mastery camos are mode-locked, earned in Multiplayer, Warzone or DMZ specifically.
A camo will not unlock no matter what - is it a bug?
Usually not. Check whether that camo is a Camo Track reward or a bundle/event cosmetic. Store and event camos are not earned through weapon challenges and will never show progress in the Gunsmith camo screen.
Why won't my MW4 camo unlock even though I did the challenge?
First confirm it is a Camo Track camo and not a store or event item, which never show progress in the Gunsmith. If it is a Track camo, back out to the menu to refresh progress and check you are on the right account and mode - shared-track progress can take a moment to sync.
