No. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has no Zombies mode, round-based or open-world, and nothing Activision has published about the game mentions one. MW4 launches on 23 October 2026 with three modes: the Campaign, Multiplayer and DMZ, the extraction mode that takes the slot Zombies held in Modern Warfare III, Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7.
That is easy to check. Activision's reveal post from 28 May describes the Campaign, Multiplayer and DMZ and nothing else, and the launch posts, DMZ guides and pre-season roadmap since have added no Zombies content. GameRant, Dexerto and Prima Games reach the same answer.
Below: why Infinity Ward's games skip the mode, how close DMZ gets, where Zombies lives now, and what is known about the future. Anything unconfirmed as of 21 October is labeled that way.
What Activision has confirmed about MW4's modes
Modern Warfare 4 is led by Infinity Ward and releases on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. Activision's announcement lays the structure out plainly: a Campaign built around a North Korean invasion of the South, Multiplayer built on the new Ballistic Authority gunplay, and DMZ, where you deploy into a hostile exclusion zone as an off-the-books asset. There is no fourth mode, no Zombies teaser and no "more modes later" line.
The Campaign is single-player only; an Activision representative told Digital Foundry there is no co-op, a change from Black Ops 7's co-op campaign. No Spec Ops-style co-op mode is in the launch lineup either. That leaves DMZ as the only MW4 mode built around teaming up against computer-controlled enemies, which is why Zombies players are looking at it.
Most outlets saying "no Zombies" are reading that same mode list rather than quoting a developer; GameRant's 19 October explainer quotes none. That settles the launch question, but claims about future seasons deserve more caution.
Why Infinity Ward's Call of Duty games skip Zombies
Zombies is Treyarch's mode. It started in World at War in 2008 and has appeared in every Treyarch release since, and when another studio's game has carried Zombies recently, Treyarch built it: Vanguard's Zombies in 2021 and Modern Warfare III's open-world MWZ in 2023 were both Treyarch work.
Infinity Ward goes a different way. When it rebooted Modern Warfare in 2019, campaign director Jacob Minkoff told PlayStation LifeStyle that a Zombies mode would undercut the grounded, realistic feel the studio wanted across the whole game. The studio has made undead content before, with Zombies in Spaceland in 2016's Infinite Warfare, but its Modern Warfare games have used Spec Ops and DMZ for their co-op side.
| Year | Game | Lead studio | Zombies? | Main co-op or PvE mode |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2019 | Modern Warfare | Infinity Ward | No | Spec Ops |
| 2020 | Black Ops Cold War | Treyarch and Raven | Yes, round-based plus Outbreak | Zombies |
| 2021 | Vanguard | Sledgehammer | Yes, built by Treyarch | Zombies |
| 2022 | Modern Warfare II | Infinity Ward | No | Spec Ops and the original DMZ |
| 2023 | Modern Warfare III | Sledgehammer | Yes, open-world MWZ built by Treyarch | MWZ |
| 2024 | Black Ops 6 | Treyarch and Raven | Yes, round-based | Zombies |
| 2025 | Black Ops 7 | Treyarch and Raven | Yes, round-based | Zombies and a co-op campaign |
| 2026 | Modern Warfare 4 | Infinity Ward | No | DMZ |
The pattern is plain: in recent years, whenever Infinity Ward leads, Zombies sits out. MW4 is also the first mainline release without Zombies since Modern Warfare II in 2022.
What MW4 has instead: DMZ's PvE side
If what you like about Zombies is fighting computer-controlled enemies with friends, DMZ is the closest thing in MW4. You deploy into Hajin, an exclusion zone where Russia meets the Korean peninsula, solo or with a squad, pick a Story Mission, a Dynamic Operation or Free Roam, then loot, fight and try to exfil before a radiation storm closes in. Our MW4 DMZ explainer covers the whole loop.
The enemy roster is where it overlaps most with Zombies. Activision's Hajin field guide lists four tiers of North Korean soldiers, from grunts up to faceless armored troops, plus drone swarms, LMG drones, robotic K9s that mostly lurk underground, helicopter patrols and convoys. Above them sit two kinds of boss: Lieutenants, named targets you can buy intel on and hunt for their Dog Tag Cases, and roaming Commanders, which Activision lists as the Colossus, a seven-foot armored soldier with a minigun; the Deathstalker, a helicopter-sized drone; and a North Korean battle tank.

Escalation will feel familiar too. Every location has a Threat Level that rises as you fight, and if your Hostiles Kill Count meter fills, an enemy Hunt Squad comes after you and you are Marked for Death. It is not a round counter, but the pressure builds the same way. A Stealth Meter pitched at solo players warns you before AI enemies spot you, and Squad Fill drops you in with two other players.
How DMZ compares with Zombies, honestly
The parallels are real. Lieutenants and Commanders do the job of special and boss zombies, Story Missions push a narrative through set objectives the way a main quest does, the 3D Printer at your Forward Operating Base plays the part of a crafting table, and the Warfighter, Scout and Survivalist Trait Trees let you specialize an Operator much as augments shape a Zombies loadout. MWZ veterans will recognize the loop of contracts, loot and exfil, which that mode shared with the original DMZ.
The differences matter more. DMZ is PvPvE: rival squads deploy into the same server, a Bounty system rewards hunting other players, and none of Activision's DMZ guides describe a PvE-only option. Failing to exfil costs every backpack item outside a Secure Slot, and your Operator goes Missing in Action, unable to deploy until you pay DMZ Cash to recover them or dismiss them for a fresh recruit. Nothing Activision has shown resembles Pack-a-Punch, Perk-a-Colas or Wonder Weapons. DMZ is also part of the paid game, as our guide to whether MW4 DMZ is free explains.
The fair summary: DMZ will suit Zombies players who enjoyed MWZ's open map and can live with other players, and it will frustrate anyone who plays Zombies to get away from PvP. Going in alone? Start with our MW4 DMZ solo guide, and the DMZ story missions guide covers the closest thing the mode has to a quest line.
Zombie-adjacent modes in MW4's first weeks
Multiplayer is where Halloween shows up. The pre-season roadmap released in mid-October lists Shipment on 27 October, a new mode called Possession on 29 October and Infected on 30 October, ahead of Season 1 on 6 November. Possession carries a pumpkin icon, but its rules had not been published as of 21 October, so do not assume it involves the undead. Our MW4 release times guide keeps every date in one place.
Infected is the one with a real zombie flavor. In previous Modern Warfare games it starts with one infected player hunting everyone else, and every survivor they kill switches sides until nobody is left or the clock runs out. MW4's version has not been detailed yet, so treat the specifics as unconfirmed.

Where to play Call of Duty Zombies right now
Black Ops 7 is still the home of Zombies. It launched on 14 November 2025 with Ashes of the Damned, which Activision billed as the biggest round-based Zombies map, alongside Dead Ops Arcade 4, and has added maps through its seasons. Season 06, The Haunting, went live on 17 September 2026 with Tenshu, a Survival map set in a samurai castle, Directed Mode for Rex Infernus, a Rogue Run update with pumpkin-headed zombies, and a Super Easter Egg for players who finished every round-based Main Quest.
One line in that Season 06 post matters for anyone waiting on more: Activision calls Rex Infernus "the final Round-Based Zombies map for Black Ops 7". Its round-based list is complete. Black Ops 7 is a separate purchase from MW4, and Black Ops 6 and MW3 are older options tied to owning those games.

For a free taste, Warzone's Season 06 Haunted Hollow runs a Giant Infected mode in which survivors who go down without a revive come back on the zombie team. That is Black Ops 7 season content, and whether it survives MW4's Season 1 integration on 6 November is unconfirmed.
Will MW4 ever get Zombies?
Nothing official points that way as of 21 October. The roadmap through Season 1 has no Zombies content, Activision's MW4 posts never mention the mode, and none of Infinity Ward's earlier Modern Warfare games added Zombies after launch. Expect DMZ to remain MW4's PvE offering, though seasons can surprise.
Further out, it is reporting and inference. GameRant expects Zombies to return with Treyarch's next game, reasoning from the studio's track record rather than an announcement. A December 2025 Insider Gaming report relayed a leaker's claim that the 2027 game, said to be Sledgehammer's, does not plan to include Zombies; Insider Gaming urged caution, noting the same leaker's earlier MW4 claim appeared to have been knocked down by Infinity Ward. We found no announcement of a 2027 Call of Duty as of 21 October, so none of that is confirmed.
If Zombies is your main mode, Black Ops 7 remains the game to play; buy MW4 for its Campaign, Multiplayer or DMZ, not in hope of a Zombies update. Our Modern Warfare 4 hub collects the rest of our launch coverage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does MW4 have a Zombies mode?
No. MW4 launches on 23 October 2026 with the Campaign, Multiplayer and DMZ only, and none of Activision's official posts for the game mention Zombies.
Is there open-world Zombies in MW4 like MW3's MWZ?
No. MWZ was a Treyarch-built mode for 2023's Modern Warfare III and did not carry over. DMZ is the closest equivalent, with AI enemies, bosses and exfil, but rival human squads share your server.
When is the MW4 Zombies release date?
There isn't one. Activision has not announced Zombies for MW4, and the roadmap through Season 1 on 6 November has none, so any date you see is speculation.
Is MW4 DMZ PvE only?
No. Rival squads share the server, and the Bounty system rewards hunting other players. None of Activision's DMZ guides describe a PvE-only playlist.
Can you play the MW4 campaign in co-op?
No. Activision has confirmed the campaign is single-player only, unlike Black Ops 7's co-op campaign.
Where can I play Call of Duty Zombies in 2026?
In Black Ops 7, a separate purchase from MW4. Its Season 06 added the Tenshu Survival map in September.
