Yes, you can play MW4 DMZ solo. Switch Squad Fill off on the Ready Up screen and you deploy into Hajin as a squad of one. There is no separate solo mode, though: you share PvPvE servers with everyone else, and matchmaking only tries to pair you with other solos.
DMZ early access in Modern Warfare 4 opened on 20 October for digital pre-orders, so this guide pairs Activision's own DMZ posts with what Infinity Ward and the press have reported since. It is checked as of 21 October, with single-source details flagged.
How to deploy solo in MW4 DMZ
The switch sits on the last screen before you drop:
- At the Forward Operating Base, open Deploy.
- Choose Story Missions, Dynamic Operations or Free Roam; matchmaking uses this to group players with similar goals.
- For Dynamic Operations or Free Roam, pick an infil. On foot is free.
- On the Ready Up screen, turn Squad Fill off with the on-screen prompt and ready up.
With Squad Fill on, the game fills your squad to three; with it off, nobody is added, so a party of two deploys as a duo. One reported exception: two walkthrough sites say the Random Story Mission card requires Squad Fill. Our DMZ story missions guide covers which other cards are realistic alone.
Squad size, lobby size and solo matchmaking
Squads hold up to three players and can reach four through assimilation, recruiting someone you meet in Hajin. "We do allow assimilation, but only one player on your team, so just four," Infinity Ward's multiplayer creative director Geoff Smith told Screen Rant. Truces go through the ping wheel, but betrayal is allowed.
Matches hold up to 20 squads, or 60 players, all dropping at the start. In its 9 October Reddit AMA, quoted by Dexerto and AllThings. How, Infinity Ward said "matches are built with the direction of putting solos with solos, duos with duos, and trios with trios," but with no guarantee. Expect the odd full trio, and assume any Operator you see has company.
There is no PvE-only playlist either; in a Destructoid interview published 20 October, Smith said the team likes "the mix that we have."
| Topic | Solo (Squad Fill off) | Squad (party or Squad Fill on) |
|---|---|---|
| Squad size | 1, or 2 if you party up with fill off | Up to 3; assimilation can take any squad to 4 |
| Matchmaking | Aims for other solos, no guarantee | Aims for squads of the same size |
| Lobby | Up to 20 squads and 60 players, all dropping at the start | The same lobbies |
| When you go down | Tourniquet, Self-Revive Kit or the Possum trait | Teammate revives, plus the same tools |
| Enemy AI and Threat | No documented scaling for squad size | Same patrols, Threat levels and Hunt Squads |
| Story Missions | Any unlocked card except Random Story Mission, reported to need Squad Fill | Every card |
| Helicopter infil | You fly it yourself | One player flies, the rest ride |

What changes when you play alone
The AI does not get easier: nothing in Activision's guides or the AMA coverage suggests enemies scale with squad size. What changes is how much you can afford to fight.
- Threat. Each location's Threat level, Low to Extreme, climbs as you fight. Human Operators are not counted, so a Low area can still hide a squad.
- Hostiles Kill Count. Fill this meter and a Hunt Squad comes for you.
- Stealth Meter. It tracks AI only, turning from white to yellow to orange before a soldier spots you; go prone or into cover and the soldier is never alerted. "That whole stealth system is 100% for solo players," Smith told Screen Rant, adding that with a suppressor, "the star system just kind of really ignores you."
Going down is the bigger shift. Without a self-revive, your tourniquet gets you up Wounded, at 100 maximum health instead of 150, per Infinity Ward's AMA. Only a Medkit repairs the wound and re-arms it; go down again on bandage or painkiller health and it will not get you up. Beyond that:
- Self-Revive Kits have their own Loadout slot. Loot them, print them from DMZ level 48, or take them from the level-27 Triage Kit.
- Traits on Activision's example list include Possum (self-revive into Last Stand once per match), Free Revive (repairs your first Wound) and Die Hard (reaching an exfil in Last Stand calls it). Minor traits are randomized.

Surviving Hajin solo
Activision's Hajin guide rates every major location. Deadtown's streets, most of Imjin Farmland, Cheongun Village, Mirae General Hospital and Songdo Wharf are Low; the 14th Political Prison, the Heavenly Luck Casino, the Haneul reactor, The Grid and Chang-san Air Base are High or worse. Learn the Low areas first, then:
- Buy information before fights. A UAV Tower is a Side Op that pays DMZ Cash and pulses nearby Operators and enemies onto your map.
- Kill quietly, then move. Activision recommends melee, throwing knives and suppressed shots in higher-threat areas, and breaking line of sight calms Threat down.
- Leave a Lieutenant's Dog Tag Case unless you are ready to exfil. Picking it up broadcasts your position, and the kill alone still pays XP and DMZ Cash.
- Skip the Hunt Operators Dynamic Op, which sends a full rival squad at you, and avoid going Wanted: four Operator kills across deployments flag you to nearby players.

A solo loadout you can afford to lose
Start from Activision's checklist, also the first DMZ Order, Gear Up: a weapon, a plate carrier, a backpack and a Medkit. Armor plates fill automatically on infil. Then tilt it toward solo play:
- A suppressed primary. The Gunsmith opens at DMZ level 10; before that, loot one or check the Vendor (level 5).
- Throwing knives (level 7 recipe) and smoke grenades (level 4).
- A Medium Backpack, printable at level 2 from 50 Synthetics and 5 Rigid Synthetics; the eight-slot Basic Pack has no Secure Slot.
- Medkits (30 Chemicals, 1 Binding Catalyst, 5 Biomaterials) and any Self-Revive Kit. Field Upgrades do not recharge in DMZ.
The game trains this kit anyway: on Game8's Orders list, Work Quietly asks you to gunsmith a suppressor, print a throwing knife and kill eight enemies in a row without taking damage. While learning the map, use the Free Loadout; anything you extract from it is yours.
Secure Slots and insurance habits
Secure Slots are the only protection confirmed to work: on a failed exfil, everything in your Backpack outside one is lost. Activision gives no count per backpack, and PC Gamer's reviewer had "a safe slot" on his upgraded pack, so plan around one.
- Secure valuables the moment you loot them; alone, nobody covers you while you sort a menu.
- Bring guns you can rebuy. Once you extract a weapon's Manual, the Gunsmith sells it for DMZ Cash; a one-off looted gun is gone when you die.
- Do the Op before the looting. Activision says Mission and Op cash is wired straight to your FOB wallet, and PC Gamer's reviewer kept it after dying; cash you pick up only banks on exfil.
Weapon Insurance Contracts and Operator Rescue Beacons come from the Vault Edition kit, the second page of the Counterfeit, Underground and Human Intel Orders, and the level-70 Advanced SERE Kit. Activision's posts do not say what they do, and the only explanation we found was on a fan wiki, so read the in-game description first. The MW4 DMZ items guide has the full keep-or-lose rules.
Picking an Operator: Active Duty slots and MIA
Alone, more downs become deaths, and a dead Operator goes MIA: they cannot deploy until you pay DMZ Cash to rescue them, at a price that rises with every Trait Point. They return with their traits but no gear, or you dismiss them and restart at a Steel I Dog Tag. You start with two Active Duty slots, three with the Vault Edition, and DMZ level 15 adds one. That suits a solo rotation:
- Build your main for survival, with Possum, Free Revive or Die Hard early.
- Keep a low-trait second Operator for Critical zones and boss fights. Their rescue is cheap, and they keep earning if your main is MIA.
- Bank one rescue's worth of DMZ Cash before taking a heavily traited Operator anywhere rated High or above.
The MW4 DMZ operators guide covers slots, trees and Prestige.
Solo-friendly Orders, Ops and exfil
Several early Orders on Game8's list suit a lone player: Triage Protocol (a bandage and 30 Chemicals from a clinic), Execute Intel (the UAV tower in Deadtown), Hunter (climb a Lieutenant Hunt tower) and Preparation, done at the FOB. Save No One Left, clearing a defended compound, for a geared run.
Dynamic Operations, started at Deploy or from a Dynamic Ops phone, are the other staple: each completion in a deployment calls in a better Supply Drop, from Common to Uncommon to Rare.
Exfil is where solo runs die. You call the Twin Heli Exfil at the green smoke and hold until it lands, and Activision warns that squads use exfils as ambush points. Clear nearby buildings first, or use a Fulton balloon or a flare, though flares are "extremely loud and visible from great distances."
The Cargo Plane infil lets you pick your exact drop point, at 100,000 DMZ Cash a drop, and Story Missions are the documented route to the LTV and helicopter infils. If you would rather skip that progression, the store offers DMZ infil vehicle unlocks. Our FOB guide covers every station, and MW4 DMZ explained the basics of a run.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you play MW4 DMZ solo?
Yes. Turn Squad Fill off on the Ready Up screen. There is no solo playlist, so you share PvPvE servers with squads.
What is the max squad size in MW4 DMZ?
Three, from a party or Squad Fill. Assimilating a player you meet in Hajin can make it four, the cap. Matches hold up to 20 squads and 60 players.
Do solo players only face other solos?
Not reliably. Infinity Ward aims to group solos with solos but gives no guarantee, so full squads still turn up.
Is there a PvE-only DMZ mode?
No. Every deployment is PvPvE, and as of 21 October Infinity Ward had only said that real demand for PvE would start a conversation.
Can you revive yourself in MW4 DMZ?
Yes. The tourniquet gets you up at 100 maximum health and re-arms only after a Medkit repairs the wound. Self-Revive Kits and the Possum trait add more chances.
What happens if you die solo in DMZ?
Your Operator goes MIA, and your Loadout and unsecured Backpack items stay in Hajin. XP still counts. Rescue the Operator with DMZ Cash or dismiss them.
