MW4 Release Times: Every Unlock Hour for Launch Day

Tridzo video thumbnail previewing Modern Warfare 4 pre-launch content including Shipment and Season 1

Modern Warfare 4 launches on Friday 23 October 2026, four days out. If you pre-ordered digitally you are not really waiting for launch day: the campaign has been playable since 16 October, and DMZ early access opens tomorrow. What is still locked behind the 23rd is the full multiplayer package - all 12 core maps, every launch mode, and the progression system everything else hangs off.

Unlock times are where this gets messy. Infinity Ward has been precise about the two early access windows and vague about the launch itself. The early access unlocks are single global moments, confirmed to the minute. The launch is a local-midnight rollout on PC, and Activision has not published console unlock hours at all. Everything below is split into what is confirmed and what is not, and the gaps are left as gaps rather than filled with guesses.

If your download has not started yet, start it before you read the rest. Preload has been open on every platform for days and the files are enormous.

The MW4 launch schedule at a glance

Eight dates matter between now and Season 1. Four of them have a published hour attached; four do not.

Campaign early access is already live

Campaign early access opened on Friday 16 October at 10:00am PT, and Infinity Ward described it as a global unlock rather than a regional rollout: 1:00pm ET, 6:00pm BST in the UK, 7:00pm CEST across mainland Europe. It has been open for three days, so there is no countdown left to watch.

The requirement is a digital pre-order or pre-purchase of either the Standard Digital Edition or the Vault Edition, on the same platform account you plan to play on. A physical Standard copy does not include it. Worth repeating, because it lands on someone every year: the disc is cheaper and it costs you a week of campaign.

Switch 2 owners have an extra wrinkle: the boxed release is reportedly a download code rather than a cartridge, and some retailers hold codes until street date, so a physical pre-order there may still miss both windows. Activision has not confirmed the packaging.

DMZ early access: Tuesday 20 October at 10:00am PT

This is the one people need today. Infinity Ward put DMZ early access at "10 AM PT / 6 PM BST on Tuesday, October 20", and like the campaign window it opens everywhere at the same instant. Converted:

10:00am PDT (Los Angeles) / 11:00am MDT (Denver) / 12:00pm CDT (Chicago) / 1:00pm EDT (New York, Toronto) / 2:00pm BRT (Sao Paulo) / 5:00pm UTC / 6:00pm BST (London) / 7:00pm CEST (Berlin, Paris, Madrid) / 8:00pm EEST (Athens, Helsinki) / 10:30pm IST (Mumbai) - then 1:00am on Wednesday 21 October in Beijing and Singapore, 2:00am KST and JST in Seoul and Tokyo, 4:00am AEDT in Sydney and 6:00am NZDT in Auckland.

A fair few roundups label those last two rows AEST and NZST. Both regions are on summer time in late October, so AEDT and NZDT are the correct labels; the clock times above are right either way. Several outlets also reported a mandatory update landing on 19 October ahead of the unlock, which we could not verify against an Activision post - so check your store for a patch rather than assuming one exists.

Those three days are not a throwaway. DMZ progression feeds multiplayer progression in MW4, which makes early access a genuine head start rather than a side mode. Our MW4 DMZ explainer covers the loop if you have not played extraction before.

Full launch: Friday 23 October, and the hour nobody has confirmed

The date is locked. The hour is not, and this is where you should be sceptical of any article giving you a confident number.

On PC, coverage consistently reports midnight local time. For consoles, Activision has not confirmed specific launch times. Two models are circulating. The better supported one is a rolling local-midnight release, flipping over region by region from New Zealand to the US West Coast. The other, which some trackers list, is a single 12:00am ET global moment. Local midnight matches how Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 rolled out, so that is the one to plan around.

If local midnight holds, the UTC equivalents are 11:00 UTC on 22 October for Auckland, 13:00 for Sydney, 15:00 for Tokyo and Seoul, 16:00 for Beijing and Singapore, 18:30 for Mumbai, 22:00 for Berlin and Paris, 23:00 for London, then 03:00 UTC on 23 October for Sao Paulo, 04:00 for New York, 05:00 for Chicago, 06:00 for Denver and 07:00 for Los Angeles. Those are conversions from an assumption, not published unlock times.

One more PC wrinkle: Steam and Battle.net have historically unlocked Call of Duty on a fixed Pacific hour rather than per-region midnight, with Black Ops 6 going live around 9:00pm PT the night before. Nobody has confirmed that pattern for MW4, so watch your storefront countdown on the day.

The daylight-saving trap that trips up most launch articles

Pedantic, and worth an hour of your evening. European clocks do not go back until Sunday 25 October 2026, two days after launch, so on both 20 and 23 October the UK is still on BST (UTC+1) and mainland Europe on CEST (UTC+2). Australia and New Zealand went the other way weeks ago: AEDT (UTC+11) since early October, NZDT (UTC+13) since late September. US daylight time runs to 1 November, so PDT and EDT hold all week.

Plenty of published timetables quote the winter offsets and land an hour out. If a table tells you London is UTC+0 for the 23rd, it is wrong.

What early access actually requires

Short version: a digital pre-order, any edition. Both windows unlock for Standard Digital, not just Vault. A handful of outlets described DMZ early access as a Vault perk, which does not match the official wording or the bulk of the coverage. Physical Standard is the exclusion, and the pre-order has to sit on the platform account you will actually play on.

If you have not bought yet, the Vault Edition's 10% loyalty discount is a pre-order offer that ends at launch on 23 October, and it only applies to buying Vault outright rather than upgrading later. Our MW4 editions comparison covers whether that extra $30 is worth it before the window closes.

What your early access progress carries into launch

XP and Weapon XP earned during campaign and DMZ early access are reported to count toward MW4 career progression, including camo unlocks. That fits the design Infinity Ward has described, where DMZ progression contributes to multiplayer progression, but it is reported rather than spelled out in an Activision post - so do not bank your whole grind plan on it.

What definitely does not carry over is your rank from Black Ops 7. MW4 starts everyone at level 1, caps military rank at 55, and then opens 10 Prestige levels plus 1,000 Prestige Master levels on top. If you want to be deep into that on day one, our guide to levelling fast in MW4 is the better read, and our Modern Warfare 4 services exist for people who would rather skip the first fifty levels entirely.

The drop calendar after launch

The 14 October roadmap puts Shipment on Tuesday 27 October, Possession on Thursday 29 October, Infected on Friday 30 October and Season 1 for MW4 and Warzone on Friday 6 November. No time of day was given for any of them.

Shipment not being in the launch pool is the detail most people miss. The 23 October board is 20 named battlegrounds and Shipment is not one of them, which changes the first weekend's grind considerably - our full MW4 map list breaks down what you actually get on day one. Possession is a genuinely new mode with nothing public beyond a name, a NEW badge and a pumpkin icon. Three modes named in August - Counter Attack, Gunfight 10v10 and Drop Zone - are absent from the October graphic, and Activision has not said why.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exact time does MW4 unlock on 23 October?

On PC, midnight local time is what coverage consistently reports. For PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2, Activision has not published launch hours as of 19 October, so anyone giving you a confirmed console minute is guessing. Plan for local midnight.

Can I get DMZ early access with a physical copy?

Not with a physical Standard Edition - early access for both the campaign and DMZ is tied to a digital pre-order. On Switch 2 the boxed version is reportedly a download code, so it depends when your retailer releases the code.

Is campaign early access still open?

Yes. It opened on 16 October at 10:00am PT and runs straight into launch. If you have a digital pre-order, the campaign is playable right now.

Does XP from early access carry over to launch?

It is reported to. Campaign and DMZ early access XP and Weapon XP are said to feed MW4 career progression and camo unlocks, which fits the stated design where DMZ progression contributes to multiplayer progression. Activision has not published a detailed carryover statement, so it is not fully nailed down.

When does Shipment arrive?

Tuesday 27 October, four days after launch. It is not in the 23 October map pool. No unlock time has been published.

Is MW4 on Game Pass at launch?

No. Unlike Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7, MW4 is not on any Game Pass tier on day one, and reporting puts its arrival at least a year after release. No specific date has been announced - see our MW4 and Game Pass rundown for the detail.
