A god roll in Destiny 2 is the best perk combination a weapon can roll for a given job, such as Light Touch with Jolting Feedback on the Whatchamacallit submachine gun for PvE. As of November 2026, chasing one works differently than it used to: weapons drop in Tiers 1 to 5, Tier 5 copies carry three traits per perk column, and since Monument of Triumph you can upgrade a lower-tier drop that already has your perks instead of farming the whole thing again. Knowing those rules saves far more time than memorizing a list of rolls.
We checked this against Bungie's Update 9.0.0.1 and 9.7.0 patch notes, the Monument of Triumph overview article and the Blueberries god roll finder and individual weapon guides in November 2026.
What a God Roll Means in the Tier System
Weapon tiers arrived with The Edge of Fate in Update 9.0.0.1, and every new or refreshed weapon now drops at a tier between 1 and 5. A Tier 1 weapon is the base version. Tier 2 adds enhanced traits. Tier 3 drops with two traits per column, Tier 4 adds enhanced weapon mods and enhanced barrels and magazines, and Tier 5 adds enhanced origin traits, three traits per column, a unique ornament and combat flair.

That multi-trait behavior changes what a god roll is. On a Tier 5 weapon you can switch between three options in each column, so a single drop can cover a PvE setup and a PvP setup, or a damage perk and a utility perk for different encounters. A lower-tier drop with exactly the two perks you wanted is still valuable, but a Tier 5 copy gives you room to adapt.
Monument of Triumph shifted one detail: enhanced weapon mods now unlock at Tier 3 for all weapons, to give that tier more value now that it is not mainly about multiple perks. Bungie also refreshed more than 200 existing weapons into the tier system, according to Blueberries, so plenty of older favorites can now drop at Tier 5 too.
Upgrading Tiers and Crafted Weapons
The biggest quality-of-life change in the final update is Weapon Tier Upgrading. Every weapon in the gear tier system, including ones already sitting in your vault, gets a new mod socket on its inspect screen where you can apply an upgrade, for a cost, to raise it one tier. That unlocks the enhanced perk benefits and Tier 5 cosmetics of higher tiers.
There is one important limit. Upgrading cannot add traits to a column. A Tier 2 drop upgraded to Tier 5 keeps its single perk per column, so if you want the flexibility of three options, you still need a natural Tier 5 drop. Bungie said activities remain the best and most consistent source of natural Tier 5 weapons.
Crafted weapons got a parallel path. Any Legendary crafted weapon you already own became eligible for a version of tier upgrading through the Crafting Table, and newly crafted weapons can take the same route. Craftable raid weapons also received updated perk pools. That makes crafting the most controlled way to build an exact roll, provided you have the pattern. Deepsight Harmonizers, which can unlock patterns, are on the Chronolog exchange for 300 Chronologs once every two weeks.
Reading a Roll for PvE and PvP
A full roll covers more than two perks. Most guides list a barrel, a magazine, two main perks, a masterwork and an origin trait, and the right answer often differs between PvE and PvP. Whatchamacallit, an Arc burst submachine gun from Pinnacle Ops, shows this well in the Blueberries breakdown.

For PvE, Blueberries recommends Fluted Barrel and Flared Magwell to shore up low handling and reload, Light Touch in the first column because it activates while you are radiant, amplified or have Devour, and Jolting Feedback or Gear Shift in the second, with a reload masterwork and the Accelerated Assault origin trait. Both second-column options reward being amplified, which makes it a natural fit for Arc builds.
For PvP, the same guide swaps to Arrowhead Brake and Accurized Rounds for range and recoil, Headseeker or Keep Away in the first column and Rangefinder or Gear Shift in the second, with a stability masterwork. The lesson applies to any weapon: decide which mode you are chasing before you judge a drop, and remember that a Tier 5 copy may let you carry both versions on one gun.
Heavy weapons follow their own logic. For The Hothead, an Arc rocket launcher Blueberries rates S tier in PvE, the suggested PvE roll is Quick Launch, Impact Casing, Envious Arsenal and Aggregate Charge, with Bait and Switch as an easier-to-trigger alternative. Aggregate Charge rewards a team that applies several debuffs to a boss, while Bait and Switch only needs you to rotate damage through your weapons.
Rolls Worth Chasing After the Final Update
Because Monument of Triumph is the last content update, the weapons it added are effectively the final meta. Blueberries rates several of them S tier, including Accelerando-42 and Terciopelo-4BL from Sparrow Racing League, Ouster Engine and Whatchamacallit from Pinnacle Ops, Rapid Growth from Solstice engrams and The Helmsman from Crucible Ops for PvP.
Refreshed older weapons also made the cut. Blueberries lists Submission from Vow of the Disciple, Gnawing Hunger from Gambit Ops and The Hothead from Pinnacle Ops among its top PvE picks after the update, while Igneous Hammer from Trials of Osiris, Rose from Competitive Crucible and Eyasluna from Grasp of Avarice stand out in PvP.
Use these as starting points, not a checklist. A weapon that fits your build is worth more than a higher-rated one that does not, and our builds guide shows which elements and weapon types each class setup leans on.
Where to Farm: Attunement, Focusing and Featured Activities
Attunement is now available anywhere. Monument of Triumph moved it into the Accessories section of your inventory, where you can pick one weapon per category for each activity menu, giving it a much higher drop chance, and change the choice at any time. Always set it before you start a farming session.
Vendor focusing is the second route. Tower vendors can now focus tiered gear from The Edge of Fate, Ash and Iron and Renegades as well as newer drops, with weapons focusable at Tier 3 or Tier 4 depending on your Power level. You can then upgrade those copies to Tier 5. Iron Banner gear is focused with Iron Banner Ciphers earned from match completions; see our Iron Banner guide for when that vendor is active.
PvP players have their own reliable sources. In Crucible Ops, Update 9.7.0 tied reward tiers to your performance grade: a C grade drops Tier 3, a B drops Tier 4 and an A or better drops Tier 5. Trials of Osiris now pulls the Lighthouse chest's featured weapon from a weekly pool rather than a single gun, and Iron Banner's MVP and additional loot rewards now drop Iron Banner weapons, so a strong match can be a farming session in itself.
For raid weapons, the weekly featured raids are the best farm, since encounters drop Deepsight weapons and Master challenges drop Adepts. The raid rotation guide explains which rewards are weekly and which are farmable. Xur is another source of specific weapons; Update 9.7.0.2 added Imperial Decree, Goldtusk, Death's Razor and Throne-Cleaver to his possible stock, and our Strange Coin guide covers how to afford him.
Mistakes That Waste Farming Time
The most common mistake is dismantling a low-tier drop that has the exact two perks you wanted. With tier upgrading, that drop can become a Tier 5 weapon with enhanced perks; you only lose the extra trait options. Keep it until you have something better.
A second is farming on a difficulty that cannot drop the tier you need. Update 9.7.0 fixed the link between difficulty and rewards in Ops activities: Normal aims at a B grade and Tier 1 gear, Expert at an A grade and Tier 3, Master at A+ and Tier 4, and Grandmaster at S and Tier 5, with optional modifiers able to push you one grade higher. If your build can handle Master with an extra modifier, that is often a faster Tier 5 farm than grinding Grandmaster runs you barely finish.
Another is ignoring origin traits and masterworks. A roll with the right main perks but a weak origin trait can be noticeably worse than one that has, for example, Accelerated Assault on a weapon that benefits from it, and on Tier 5 drops the origin trait is enhanced.
The last is running out of space. Monument of Triumph increased vault space and loadout slots, but a tier system with multi-perk drops still fills a vault quickly. Lock the rolls you want, tag duplicates and clear out the rest every week.
Want a Loaded Vault From Day One?
Building a vault of Tier 5 and Adept weapons is the longest grind in the game, especially for raid gear that only drops well on featured weeks. If you would rather begin with that arsenal, the store's Destiny 2 page lists accounts from independent sellers that often mention raid and dungeon weapons, Exotics and Power, and the selection changes daily. One rule to factor in: Bungie's Terms of Use do not allow accounts to be sold, traded or transferred unless Bungie has specifically permitted it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a god roll in Destiny 2?
It is the ideal set of perks, barrel, magazine, masterwork and origin trait for a weapon in a specific role, such as PvE add clear or PvP dueling.
Can I upgrade a weapon to Tier 5?
Yes. Since Monument of Triumph, a mod socket on the weapon lets you upgrade it one tier at a time for a cost, but it cannot add extra traits to its perk columns.
How many perks does a Tier 5 weapon have?
Tier 5 weapons drop with three traits per column, plus enhanced origin traits, a unique ornament and combat flair.
How do I farm a specific weapon?
Attune to it from your inventory, play its source activity on a high difficulty or when featured, and use vendor focusing if the vendor offers it.
Are crafted weapons still worth it?
Yes. Crafted Legendary weapons can now be upgraded through the Crafting Table, so a crafted roll can reach Tier 5 benefits.
Where can I check weapon god rolls?
Community databases such as light.gg and Blueberries list recommended rolls; in game, perk tooltips explain what each trait does.
