To get Strange Coins in Destiny 2 as of November 2026, play the core activity playlists and events that drop them (Vanguard and Crucible playlists, Onslaught, Iron Banner and Trials of Osiris), claim the weekly reward track in the Seasonal Hub, and spend Chronologs at the Monument to Seasons Past exchange, which sells seven coins for 50 Chronologs up to ten times a week. You spend them at Xûr, who keeps a shop in the Tower Bazaar from Friday until the Tuesday weekly reset. Since Monument of Triumph, you can hold up to 777 at once.
We checked this against Bungie's Update 9.0.0.1, 9.7.0 and 9.7.0.2 patch notes, Bungie Help's ritual reset guide and the Destinypedia entries for Strange Coins and Xûr in November 2026.
Where Strange Coins Come From
Strange Coins are Xûr's currency. They first appeared in the original Destiny, came back in the 30th Anniversary Pack for Starhorse's bounties, and returned to Xûr with The Final Shape, when Starhorse's bounties switched to costing Glimmer. Destinypedia lists ritual activities, Onslaught, Iron Banner and Trials of Osiris as the in-game sources, which in today's menus means the Ops playlists on the Director as well as the two big PvP events.

The second steady source is the weekly reward track. When The Edge of Fate introduced the Portal in Update 9.0.0.1, Bungie gave the Seasonal Hub a weekly, account-wide reward track whose rewards include Exotic Ciphers, Unstable Cores, Strange Coins and Bright Dust. You fill it by completing daily and weekly challenges: dailies award one rank, weeklies award four. The track resets every week, so claiming it each reset is the closest thing to free coins in the game.
A third, smaller boost comes from Xûr himself. Spending coins with him builds reputation and lets you pick up a Favor of the Nine, which grants a Strange Favor buff that gives a chance at a bonus coin whenever a Strange Coin drops. Destinypedia notes the buff stacks up to three times (Strange, Stranger and Strangest Favor) and lasts eleven days unless you pick up another Favor.
The Chronolog Exchange Shortcut
Monument of Triumph turned the Chronolog Exchange at the Monument to Seasons Past into a weekly shop. One of its offers is seven Strange Coins for 50 Chronologs, purchasable ten times per week. Buying all ten gives you 70 coins a week for 500 Chronologs, which is enough on its own for a couple of Xûr purchases.
Chronologs themselves got easier to earn in the same update. The Seasonal Hub's Weekly Reward Track now pays 300 Chronologs in total, up from 50, and Vanguard Alerts pay 200, up from 50, once a week. The Triumphant Rewards Pass, which no longer expires, also includes 3,500 Chronologs. Chronologs now sit among the four featured currencies in the UI, after Glimmer and before Silver.
The catch is competition for those Chronologs. The same exchange sells Enhancement Prisms, Ascendant Alloys and Shards, an Exotic Engram for 300, an Exotic Cipher for 500 and a Deepsight Harmonizer for 300 every two weeks, and Commander Zavala's Arsenal Credit buyback now costs up to 200 Chronologs instead of Bright Dust. Decide each week whether coins are your priority before you spend everything on them.
Xûr's Schedule, Location and Reputation
Xûr appears on Friday and stays until the weekly reset on Tuesday. According to Destinypedia, he used to wander between Nessus, the Tower Hangar and the EDZ, but since The Final Shape he runs a permanent shop in the Tower Bazaar and no longer moves each week. The reset happens at 17:00 UTC, which Bungie Help converts to 9:00 AM Pacific while daylight saving time is off from November to March.

Buying from him now does more than empty your wallet. Update 9.7.0 restored Xûr's reputation rank reward track, with purchases granting reputation, so regular shoppers earn track rewards on top of what they buy. The Edge of Fate had already changed his Xenology quest to award progress for completing Portal activities, with bonuses based on performance grade, average activity duration and playing with clanmates.
His prices for weapons are fixed and worth memorizing. Since The Edge of Fate, non-Adept legacy weapons cost 17 Strange Coins each, while the rare Adept versions he sometimes stocks cost 41. Those two numbers make it easy to budget a week's coins before you even open his menu.
What to Spend Strange Coins On
Xûr's stock follows rules Bungie set in The Edge of Fate. He sells two Exotic armor pieces per class each week, one from his classic pool and one from the Beyond Light through The Final Shape pools, the latter only if you own that expansion. He sells three Legendary weapons per slot, drawn from sources that include Nightfalls, Trials, the Brave arsenal and older Episodes, and he keeps Exotic catalysts in a Strange Gear Offers submenu.
Monument of Triumph updated his inventory again with new catalysts and tiered armor, and Update 9.7.0.2 gave him a chance to sell Imperial Decree, Goldtusk, Death's Razor and Throne-Cleaver. Those four can also drop from his Strange Engrams. They are not tiered, but their patterns can be unlocked for crafting with Deepsight Harmonizers, which makes them a good long-term buy if you like crafting exact rolls; our god roll guide explains how crafted weapons can now be upgraded.
His Exotic armor is a better buy than it used to be. Monument of Triumph gave all Armor 3.0 Exotic armor Tier 5 stats and access to every tuning mod, so a piece you buy from Xûr is no longer a stat compromise compared with one from an endgame activity. If an Exotic you have never owned shows up in his weekly pair, it is usually worth the coins, because it immediately opens a new build option rather than adding a duplicate to your vault.
Prismatic players should watch his Strange Gear section too. Blueberries reported that Update 8.5.0.2 in August 2024 let Xûr sometimes sell randomly rolled Exotic class items for 41 Strange Coins to players who have unlocked them through Dual Destiny. Whether that offer appears in a given week varies, so check his menu every Friday. The Exotic class item guide explains which perk pairs to look for.
A Weekly Routine for Steady Coins
A simple routine covers most of what you need. On Tuesday after reset, check the Seasonal Hub's weekly challenges and plan your Ops runs around them, since they feed both the reward track and Chronologs. During the week, play the Vanguard or Crucible playlists you enjoy, adding Iron Banner on the weeks it runs and Trials on weekends when it is live.
- Clear the daily and weekly challenges that fill the weekly reward track and claim every rank.
- Run the Vanguard Alert for its Chronologs once a week.
- Spend Chronologs at the exchange on the seven-coin bundle, up to ten times, if coins are your priority that week.
- Visit Xûr on Friday, pick up a Favor of the Nine if your Strange Favor has expired, and buy what you planned.
- Keep enough coins in reserve for a surprise Adept or catalyst at 41 coins.
Free-to-play players can follow most of this routine, with one gap. Bungie Help says every player can join Iron Banner regardless of expansion ownership, though free accounts need SMS verification, while Trials of Osiris needs both SMS verification and ownership of The Edge of Fate, Renegades or Destiny 2: The Collection. If you own none of those, lean harder on the playlists, the reward track and the Chronolog Exchange.
Iron Banner weeks deserve special attention because the event appears in Destinypedia's list of coin sources and also pays its own gear. Our Iron Banner schedule guide explains the four-week cadence.
Caps, Old Currencies and Common Confusion
The cap matters if you save up. Update 9.7.0 raised the maximum stack of Strange Coins to 777, so you can bank a healthy reserve for weeks when Xûr has something special. Anything above the cap is wasted, so spend before you hit it.
Older guides still mention Legendary Shards as a Xûr currency or as a way to buy Exotic engrams. Bungie's Monument of Triumph FAQ says Legendary Shards and planetary materials were deprecated, and some can be exchanged with Rahool for other currencies. If a guide tells you to farm shards for Xûr, it is out of date.
Finally, Xûr no longer sells some items that older lists mention. The Edge of Fate removed Nightfall Ciphers, Osirian Ciphers, Upgrade Modules and Ritual Engrams from his shop and moved his legacy armor sets to Ada-1. If you need those items, look elsewhere in the Tower.
Skipping the Coin Grind
Coins only buy what Xûr happens to stock, and building a full collection of catalysts, Exotics and Adepts that way takes months. If you would rather start with a well-stocked character, the store's Destiny 2 hub lists accounts from independent sellers, typically described by Exotic count, Power and titles, and those listings change daily. Bear in mind that Bungie's Terms of Use say accounts and their contents may not be sold or transferred without Bungie's specific permission.
