In release order, the Destiny 2 expansions run Curse of Osiris (December 2017), Warmind (May 2018), Forsaken (September 2018), Shadowkeep (October 2019), Beyond Light (November 2020), the Bungie 30th Anniversary Pack (December 2021), The Witch Queen (February 2022), Lightfall (February 2023), The Final Shape (June 2024), The Edge of Fate (July 2025) and Renegades (December 2025). After those came Monument of Triumph on June 9, 2026, a free update that Bungie announced as the game's final live-service content release. Not all of those are still playable, so the order you play them in today is a little different from the order they launched.
We checked this against the Wikipedia entry for Destiny 2, Bungie's Destiny 2: The Collection store page, the Monument of Triumph support guide on Bungie Help and Bungie's September and October 2026 studio updates in November 2026.
The Complete Release Timeline
Destiny 2 launched on September 6, 2017 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with the PC version following on October 24. Its base campaign, the Red War, was followed by two smaller expansions in Year One, then one large expansion per year until The Final Shape closed the Light and Darkness saga. Year Eight, called the Year of Prophecy, switched to two mid-sized expansions, each starting a long season with a major free update halfway through.

The status column reflects Bungie's own store page for Destiny 2: The Collection, which bundles every expansion and content pack still on sale. It lists five expansions (Renegades, The Edge of Fate, The Final Shape, Lightfall and The Witch Queen) and four packs (30th Anniversary, Beyond Light, Shadowkeep and Forsaken), and notes that the Beyond Light and Shadowkeep campaigns are free for everyone.
Year One: The Red War, Curse of Osiris and Warmind
The first year built out the original story. Curse of Osiris arrived on December 5, 2017, took players to Mercury and added the Leviathan, Eater of Worlds raid lair. Warmind followed on May 8, 2018, opened the Hellas Basin on Mars, introduced the Escalation Protocol horde mode and added a second raid lair, Spire of Stars. Both raised the level and Power caps of their day and carried timed PlayStation exclusives.
None of that is playable right now. When Beyond Light launched in November 2020, Bungie moved the Red War campaign, Curse of Osiris and Warmind into the Destiny Content Vault, and they have stayed there since. New players today start with the New Light quest from Shaw Han in the Cosmodrome instead of the original campaign.
That is set to change. In its September 17, 2026 post, Bungie said it is working to bring vaulted campaigns, destinations and raids back for all players, and its October Community Update named the first pass: the Red War, Curse of Osiris, Warmind and Forsaken campaigns, their strikes, their raids and raid lairs, and the Menagerie. Bungie expects pre-production to run until roughly January or February, followed by about twelve months of full production.
Forsaken, Shadowkeep and Beyond Light
Forsaken launched on September 4, 2018 as the start of Year Two, with a revenge story built around the death of Cayde-6. It added Gambit, Bows, the Last Wish raid, the first dungeon (The Shattered Throne) and the Dreaming City. Its Tangled Shore campaign was removed when The Witch Queen launched in February 2022, but the Dreaming City and its endgame survive as the Forsaken Pack.

Shadowkeep, released on October 1, 2019, returned to the Moon, added the Garden of Salvation raid and the Pit of Heresy dungeon, and started the seasonal model. Beyond Light followed on November 10, 2020 with Europa, the Deep Stone Crypt raid and Stasis, the first Darkness subclass. Both campaigns are now free, and Bungie's help pages say Stasis is unlocked by completing the Beyond Light campaign, which is available to all players.
The Bungie 30th Anniversary Pack sits between Beyond Light and The Witch Queen. It arrived in December 2021 as a mid-season update and added the Grasp of Avarice dungeon in the Cosmodrome's old Loot Cave, plus a quest for the Gjallarhorn rocket launcher. It is a pack rather than a story expansion, but it is part of the Collection and needed for that dungeon.
The Witch Queen, Lightfall and The Final Shape
The Witch Queen launched on February 22, 2022 and centers on the Hive god Savathûn, who had stolen the Light for her brood. It introduced Savathûn's Throne World, Glaives, weapon crafting and the Vow of the Disciple raid. Lightfall followed on February 28, 2023 on Neptune's Neomuna, adding Strand and the Root of Nightmares raid.
The Final Shape, released on June 4, 2024, concluded the Light and Darkness saga inside the Traveler's Pale Heart. It added Prismatic, which lets Guardians mix Light and Darkness abilities, the Salvation's Edge raid and the Exotic class items. After launch Bungie moved to Episodes rather than Seasons: Echoes, Revenant and Heresy, which added the Vesper's Host and Sundered Doctrine dungeons. If you plan to use Prismatic, The Final Shape is the expansion to prioritize; the Exotic class item guide explains why.
The Year of Prophecy and the Final Update
Year Eight began with The Edge of Fate on July 15, 2025, which sent Guardians to the planetoid Kepler, added The Desert Perpetual raid and rebuilt gear with Armor 3.0 and weapon tiers. Its major update, Ash and Iron, arrived on September 9, 2025. Renegades launched on December 2, 2025 as the game's tenth and final expansion, a Star Wars inspired story made with Lucasfilm Games that introduced the Lawless Frontier and the Equilibrium dungeon.
The second major update was originally scheduled for March as Shadow and Order. It was delayed, rescoped and renamed Monument of Triumph, and Bungie announced on May 21, 2026 that it would be the final live-service content update. It launched free on June 9, 2026 with Pantheon, Sparrow Racing League, Distortions, new armor archetypes and refreshed loot for every older raid and dungeon. The two expansions that had been planned for 2026, Shattered Cycle and The Alchemist, were cancelled.
Seasonal events ended too. The Monument of Triumph support guide lists the Guardian Games, Solstice, Festival of the Lost and the Dawning as retired, with some of their rewards moved to the Monument of Guardian Tenets vendors.
Seasons and Episodes Between the Expansions
The expansions are only part of the story. From Forsaken onward, each year also had paid Seasons, and later Episodes, that told smaller stories between the big releases: Season of the Forge, Season of the Drifter and Season of Opulence in Forsaken's year, Season of the Haunted, Plunder and the Seraph during The Witch Queen's year, and Echoes, Revenant and Heresy after The Final Shape. Several of them added endgame content that is still around, such as the King's Fall and Crota's End raids and the Duality, Spire of the Watcher, Ghosts of the Deep and Warlord's Ruin dungeons.
The narrative missions from those Seasons are a different matter. In its October 2026 update, Bungie listed seasonal story missions and seasonal hubs such as the Eliksni Quarter among the content it currently has no path to restore, while seasonal activities from Season 9's Sundial through Season 23's The Coil sit on its stretch-goal list. If you want the full plot of those years, recap videos and the in-game lore books are the practical route for now.
That gap is worth knowing before you plan a story run, because some expansion campaigns open with events that happened in the Season just before them. Lightfall, for example, picks up shortly after Rasputin's sacrifice at the end of Season of the Seraph.
Which Order to Play Them in Now
Because the first three campaigns are vaulted, a new player in November 2026 effectively starts with the New Light quest, then Shadowkeep and Beyond Light, which cost nothing. Beyond Light is worth doing early because it unlocks Stasis. From there, playing The Witch Queen, Lightfall and The Final Shape in order gives you the strongest story run and unlocks Strand and Prismatic along the way.
The Edge of Fate and Renegades come last. Their campaigns now launch from the Destinations screen, and Bungie removed the Renegades auto-launch so returning players are not dropped into it unexpectedly. If you own neither, Destiny 2: The Collection is the simplest purchase because it includes every expansion and pack plus the dungeon keys for The Witch Queen, Lightfall and The Final Shape. Our raid list and dungeon guide show which endgame activities each purchase opens.
Ownership is per platform. Bungie's Cross Save guide states that expansion licenses do not move between platform accounts, so buy on the system you actually play on. Our crossplay and Cross Save guide covers the details.
Want the Whole Timeline Unlocked?
Buying every pack and then playing through each campaign is a big investment of money and time. Some players would rather start on a character that already has the expansions, Exotics and titles in place, and the store's Destiny 2 hub lists accounts from independent sellers that often note owned content, Power and Guardian Rank, with listings refreshed daily. One plain fact before you look: Bungie's Terms of Use bar players from selling, trading or otherwise transferring accounts unless Bungie specifically permits it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What was the last Destiny 2 expansion?
Renegades, released on December 2, 2025, was the tenth and final expansion. Monument of Triumph followed on June 9, 2026 as a free final content update.
Which Destiny 2 campaigns are free?
The Shadowkeep and Beyond Light campaigns are available to all players, along with the New Light quest. Later expansions must be bought.

Not yet. It has been vaulted since November 2020, but Bungie plans to restore it along with Curse of Osiris, Warmind and Forsaken in its unvaulting project.
What is in Destiny 2: The Collection?
All five expansions still on sale, four content packs, the reward passes from the Year of Prophecy and dungeon keys, giving access to ten dungeons and seven raids.
Is there going to be a Destiny 3?
Nothing has been announced. Bungie says it is working on a new future for Destiny but told players not to expect a Destiny announcement at The Game Awards this year.
Do I need to play the expansions in order?
It is not required, but playing The Witch Queen, Lightfall and The Final Shape in order makes the story far easier to follow.
