Yes, Destiny 2 has full crossplay: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC players on Steam, the Epic Games Store and the Microsoft Store can form fireteams and play together, and it is switched on by default. Console players can opt out, and competitive modes keep console and PC players in separate matchmaking pools unless a console player joins a PC fireteam. Crossplay is not the same as Cross Save, which is the separate system that lets you carry one set of characters between platforms.
We checked this against Bungie Help's Cross Play guide and Cross Save guide, the Monument of Triumph support guide and the Wikipedia entry for Destiny 2 in November 2026.
Which Platforms Play Together
Crossplay arrived on August 24, 2021 with Season of the Lost, and it has been part of the game ever since. Bungie's Cross Play guide says it is enabled automatically for every player and needs no activation, and that you do not need a Bungie.net account to use it.

The current platform list is easy to confirm from Bungie's own Monument of Triumph support guide, which gave Update 9.7.0 download sizes for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Steam, the Epic Games Store and the Microsoft Store. All seven versions share the same game and the same final content update, so any of them can party up with the others in activities that allow it.
That matters more now than it once did. With Monument of Triumph confirmed as the last live-service content update, no new activities are coming to split players up, and being able to pull friends from any platform into a raid or dungeon makes a full fireteam much easier to assemble. Our raid guide and dungeon guide cover which activities each purchase unlocks.
How Matchmaking Is Split
Bungie treats competitive and cooperative content differently. Competitive modes such as the Crucible and Gambit use two matchmaking pools, one for console players and one for PC players. If a console player joins a fireteam that contains PC players, the whole fireteam is matched into the PC pool for that activity, which is worth remembering before you invite a PC friend into your Crucible session.
Gambit is worth calling out because it got new life in Monument of Triumph. It now has its own Gambit Ops category on the Director with a tiered reward pool, a new armor set and reprised weapons, and a team that reaches the Primeval phase earns an S grade and Tier 5 gear. Since Bungie counts Gambit as competitive, mixed PC and console fireteams queue in the PC pool there too.
Non-competitive activities and modes, such as strikes and social spaces, matchmake across all platforms without separate pools. That widens the pool for cooperative playlists, so a console player can end up alongside PC players in a strike or a social space without doing anything special.
Trials of Osiris has a stricter rule: Bungie requires players to have crossplay enabled to participate at all. Trials also requires SMS verification and ownership of The Edge of Fate, Renegades or Destiny 2: The Collection, according to the Monument of Triumph support guide. If you turn crossplay off, Trials disappears from your options.
Finally, if you do disable crossplay, you only matchmake with players on your own platform who have also turned it off. A smaller pool can mean longer waits, so it is worth testing a few queues before deciding to leave it off.
Bungie Names, Friends and Invites
To make cross-platform play work, every account received a Bungie Name: the name of the first platform account you logged in with after crossplay launched, followed by a four-digit number. The roster screen shows other players' Bungie Names and the platform they are on, plus your platform friends and your Bungie Friends list.

Bungie Friends are the cross-platform friends list. You can add them in game or on Bungie.net by searching for an exact Bungie Name in the Invites tab of the roster, and you can sync your current platform friends to add them quickly. The limit is 200 Bungie Friends at a time. From the same roster screen you can manage pending fireteam invites, clan invites and friend requests, and on the Settings tab you can choose who is allowed to invite you.
Blocking works across platforms too. Blocking a Bungie Name blocks every platform account linked to it and stops friend requests, session invites and voice and text communication from that player. Names that break Bungie's Code of Conduct or profanity filter are automatically reset to "Guardian" followed by a new number.
Clans are cross-platform as well, and the clan roster shows which platform each member is currently playing on. If you are looking for a group rather than a friend, Fireteam Finder, the in-game LFG tool on the roster screen, is the place to post.
How to Turn Crossplay Off
Bungie's guide lists opt-out options for PlayStation and Xbox consoles. On PlayStation, the setting is in Destiny 2's own in-game settings menu. On Xbox, it is controlled from the console's privacy settings rather than the game:
- Open Settings, then General.
- Select Online Safety and Family, then Privacy and Online Safety.
- Choose Xbox Privacy, then View Details and Customize.
- Open Communication and Multiplayer.
- Set "You can join cross-network play" to Block, and set "You can communicate outside of Xbox with voice and text" to Block.
Reverse those two settings (Allow and Everybody) to turn it back on. On Xbox consoles and the Microsoft Store version for PC, in-game invites between those two platforms stop working when crossplay is disabled, so Xbox and Microsoft Store friends need crossplay on to invite each other.
If you disable crossplay while you are already in a fireteam or activity with players who have it enabled, you will see error code CHICKPEA. Turning crossplay back on through the steps above clears it.
Cross Save Is a Different System
Cross Save lets you choose one Destiny 2 account and set of characters as your active account and use it on any platform you link to your Bungie profile. Characters on your other linked accounts become dormant: they are not deleted, but you cannot use them while Cross Save is active, and Bungie says this applies to Silver purchases, gear and armor as well. Cross Save never merges characters from different accounts.
It is designed as a one-time decision. If you deactivate Cross Save for any reason, there is an unskippable 90-day wait before you can enable it again, with no exceptions, and you cannot disable it until 90 days after Silver was last bought or added. Bungie says the waiting period exists partly to discourage account recoveries by other players.
The most important limit for buyers is licensing. Expansion and pack licenses, such as Beyond Light or Shadowkeep, do not move between platforms with Cross Save, so you must buy them on each platform where you want to play them. Items tied to a DLC you do not own on your current platform may be unavailable there. Our expansion order guide lists what each purchase includes so you can buy once, on the right system.
Older paid passes follow a similar rule. Bungie's Cross Save guide says Season Passes are bound to the first Destiny 2 account you log in with after buying them when you accept the "Cross Save Ready?" prompt, even if that account has no characters yet, and they cannot be moved or refunded afterwards. Log in to the right account before accepting that prompt. Banned accounts, meanwhile, cannot join Cross Save or change an existing setup at all.
Common Problems and Fixes
Most Cross Save trouble comes from authentication. Every linked platform account must be authenticated before you can enable or disable Cross Save, and Bungie suggests clearing your browser's cookies and cache, trying a private window or another browser, or using the official Destiny Companion app if the login keeps failing.
If you cannot log in to one of the linked platform accounts, Bungie cannot remove that link for you; you have to recover the account through that platform's own support. Steam users who see the wrong characters should check that the Steam ID of the account they are logging into matches the one linked to their Bungie profile, since several Steam profiles can share a display name.
For crossplay-specific issues, the quickest checks are whether crossplay is enabled on both players' sides and whether one of you is on a fireteam in a competitive pool you did not expect. Event weeks such as Iron Banner bring a lot of players back at once; our Iron Banner schedule guide explains when those weeks fall.
Starting on the Platform You Want
Because licenses stay on the platform they were bought on, moving to a new system can mean buying the expansions again and rebuilding progress. Some players look for an account that already sits on their preferred platform, and the store's Destiny 2 hub lists accounts from independent sellers, usually described by platform, owned content and Power, with listings that change daily. Before going that route, know that Bungie's Terms of Use forbid selling, trading or transferring accounts unless Bungie specifically permits it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Destiny 2 cross platform between PS5 and PC?
Yes. PlayStation, Xbox and PC players can all form fireteams together, though competitive modes split console and PC matchmaking pools.
How do I add friends from another platform?
Search their exact Bungie Name, including the four-digit number, in the Invites tab of the roster screen or on Bungie.net, and send a Bungie Friend request.
Can I turn off crossplay on PC?
Bungie's Cross Play guide only lists opt-out options for PlayStation and Xbox consoles.
Do I need crossplay on for Trials of Osiris?
Yes. Trials requires crossplay to be enabled, along with SMS verification and ownership of The Edge of Fate, Renegades or The Collection.
Does Cross Save transfer my expansions?
No. Expansion and pack licenses stay on the platform where you bought them, so you need to buy them again on another platform.
What does error code CHICKPEA mean?
It appears when you disable crossplay while in a fireteam or activity with players who have it enabled. Turning crossplay back on fixes it.
