Valor Mortis Ending Explained: One Ending and No Branches

Valor Mortis has one ending. It plays out in Entropy after you defeat the final boss, Entity, Voice of the Void, and none of the choices you make during the story changes it; the final conversation only changes some dialogue. This page explains how you reach that ending, what happens in it (behind a clear spoiler warning), what you can still miss before it, and what the game lets you do after the credits as of November 2026.

We checked this against the metabot.gg choices, missables and chapter data, All Things How's boss and ending walkthrough, PowerPyx's trophy roadmap, Insider Gaming's post-game report and the publisher's launch announcement in November 2026.

One Ending, No Branches

If you were worried about locking yourself out of a better ending, you can relax. The metabot.gg database, built from the PC game files after the 1.0.1 patch, lists fifteen choices across the campaign and describes a single ending sequence. The choices that do matter change rewards, not the outcome. Sleeping Beauty in the Cursed Hollow and Misericorde in the City of Orphans alter what you are paid, and a string of conversations with the Mice in The Outskirts and the City of Orphans build a friendship score that unlocks extra rewards late in the game. Misericorde is a good example of how small the stakes are: choosing to end a dying man's suffering pays 3,000 Catalysts on top of the Remnant's Return you get either way, and the story carries on exactly the same.

Dialogue choices when you first meet James at the Abandoned Church and Lucjan Skawinski only set story flags. The same goes for the final conversation: its options change what is said, not how the story ends. That also means there is no ending-related trophy beyond beating the last boss, which PowerPyx lists as In His Own Image, a gold trophy for defeating the Entity that cannot be missed.

How You Reach the Ending

The road to the credits runs through the last three bosses and two regions with no way back. Without story spoilers, the sequence is:

  1. Chapter X: Shackled, the Fortress. Light its six Lanterns (Main Gate, Traverse, Chapel, Ramparts, Courtyard and High Tower) and clear the area.
  2. The High Tower and Captain Raphael. His arena sits beside the High Tower Lantern. This is the point of no return.
  3. Chapter XI: Reflection, Napoleon's Prison. No boss and no fast travel. Its two Lanterns, Prison and Burning City, only let you rest, and once you leave you cannot return.
  4. Entropy. The final region and the fight with Entity, Voice of the Void: 5,000 Health, 700 posture, six unblockable attacks out of nineteen and a 60% resistance to Ignite build-up.

If you are still building toward this stretch, the full boss order covers the Raphael and Entity fights in more detail, and the playtime breakdown gives a sense of how far you have left.

Spoiler Warning: The Final Chapters

Major story spoilers follow from here to the end of the next section. If you have not reached the Fortress yet, skip down to "Before the Point of No Return".

At the top of the Fortress tower, William is captured. He wakes in a prison, convinced he has been sold out, and the Shrike, the mysterious leader of the rebellion whom you have been following through letters since Chapter V, is revealed to be Maria Walewska, Napoleon's confidante. She cuts his bonds and asks for his help. William recovers his gear from the maze-like prison and heads back to camp, unsure who betrayed him.

Chapter XI, Reflection, picks up in Napoleon's Prison. William's journal opens with him reflecting on what he found at the camp before entering a cave. The last journal entry describes a duel in which, in his words, "The face that stared back at me across the blade was my own," and he writes that his doubt has been defeated. That line is the key to the chapter's title, and to the name of the final trophy, In His Own Image.

The Final Cinematic Explained

Spoilers continue. After Entity falls, William reaches into its body and tears out its glowing crystalline heart while it taunts him for betraying Napoleon. He answers that the "untameable fire" had to be quenched, and that the world "deserves to taste the sweetness of peace. Even if only for a moment." A guillotine blade drops, a monologue plays over Napoleon's legacy, and the final shots show an eagle flying over armies marching through snow beside huge walking mega-cannons before the title card appears.

Our reading: the ending frames William's victory as a pause, not a resolution. He destroys the power at the heart of Napoleon's unnatural war, but the closing images of marching armies and war machines suggest the conflict itself rolls on, which leaves obvious room for the major story DLC the publisher has planned for 2027. That is our interpretation of the imagery rather than confirmed lore, so treat it as one reading among several.

The cast is worth knowing if you watch the ending again. Vincent Cassel voices Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, Jennifer English plays the Shrike, and James Alexander voices William Dowsett.

Before the Point of No Return

Because Napoleon's Prison and Entropy have no fast travel, metabot.gg's missables list recommends finishing three things before you climb the High Tower:

  • The Oathbound. All seven Eternal Guard duels and the hidden chamber in the Fortress. Our Eternal Guard locations guide covers every one.
  • The castle bonfire. Lighting it unlocks Frenzied Flame, one of the rarer achievements at 10.4% of Steam players.
  • At least 10 Mice friendship. With 10 or more points, the Mice leave you 3 Special Cartridges in Napoleon's Prison, and the Mouse King in Entropy hands over the Giant Whisker Gift worth 30,000 Catalysts plus the Mice's Key, which opens a shortcut through Entropy. No friendship points are available after the High Tower.

Napoleon's Prison has its own one-way content too: the side quests The Forgotten Fortune and The Choir, several chests and two keys. PowerPyx lists The Choir as the only missable side quest in the game, so pick it up on the way through.

Getting Through the Last Fight

The ending is locked behind the toughest Health pool in the game, so it pays to arrive prepared. Entity, Voice of the Void has 5,000 Health across two phases, and its signature trick is calling in enemies, including ones from earlier regions. Each summon dies to a single hit, so the cleanest approach is to cut down the adds the moment they appear, then turn back to the boss. Keeping the Shield Transmutation ready for its heaviest strikes is the other half of the plan.

A few numbers shape the loadout. Firearms deal 20% less damage to Entity, but its head takes 1.5 times damage, so the Pistol still has a role against weak points even if it is not your main damage source. Fire is less reliable here than against early bosses, because Entity resists Ignite build-up by 60%. Melee pressure and posture damage do the heavy lifting. Update 1.005 on 23 October 2026 also fixed several Entity bugs, including problems with Flame and Stasis Transmutation effects, a floating Claymore and the boss vanishing after a teleport, so if your launch-week attempts felt broken, the fight should behave more consistently now.

Spend your Catalysts before you leave Napoleon's Prison, and use the last Lantern to top off. Beating Entity pays 100,000 Catalysts, the biggest single payout in the game, but you will only get to spend it in free roam after the credits.

After the Credits

The game does not end at the title card. Insider Gaming reports that you load back in beside a Lantern with Lucjan standing next to it; speak to him, then use the Lantern to fast travel and finish any side quests or collectibles you missed. PowerPyx confirms free roam continues after the story, which is why it lists no missable trophies.

What is not there yet is New Game+. The publisher announced it for the fourth quarter of 2026, with tougher encounters and your equipment and progression carried over, but as of November 2026 it has not been released. Choosing New Game from the main menu starts a fresh save that overwrites your current progress, so if you want to keep your finished file, back it up first using our save file location guide. And if you were hoping to see the ending with a friend, the game is solo only; our page on co-op and multiplayer explains why.

Collect the Platinum Without the Cleanup

Seeing the ending gets you In His Own Image, but the platinum still needs every Amber, the feat trophies and the Oathbound. If you would rather have the full list done, the store's Valor Mortis Platinum Trophy service unlocks every bronze, silver and gold trophy and the platinum directly on your account. You can choose instant timestamps, where everything unlocks within seconds, or spaced-out timestamps with realistic gaps between trophies.

The service is for PS5. If you would rather play the ending yourself with a powered-up character, the modded save and other options are on the Valor Mortis store page.
