Valor Mortis has no co-op. It is a strictly single-player game, with no online co-op, no local split-screen, no summoning of other players and no PvP or invasions, and that is how it was announced and how it launched on 13 October 2026. As of November 2026 no multiplayer mode has been announced for its post-launch roadmap either. Below is what that means in practice, what kind of help the game does give you, and how two people can still share it.
We checked this against the Steam store listing and its feature tags, PCGamingWiki, Gematsu's announcement coverage, the GAMES.GG FAQ, the publisher's launch announcement and the metabot.gg mechanics data in November 2026.
What the Official Listings Say
Every official source points the same way. The game was revealed at Gamescom Opening Night Live in August 2025 as a single-player, first-person soulslike from One More Level, the studio behind Ghostrunner, published by Lyrical Games. On Steam, the feature list for app 2828710 includes Single-player, Steam Achievements, full controller support, Steam Cloud, HDR and Family Sharing, and nothing for online co-op, local co-op, PvP or cross-platform multiplayer. PCGamingWiki lists Singleplayer as the only mode and has no multiplayer section at all.

The GAMES.GG FAQ puts it most plainly: strictly single-player, with no co-op, no online component and no asynchronous multiplayer of any kind. That last part matters for soulslike fans, because it rules out the light-touch online features the genre often uses, such as leaving messages for other players or seeing their deaths. Every run of Valor Mortis is your own.
Why a Soulslike Without Summons Plays Differently
In many soulslikes, co-op is a pressure valve. A boss that walls you can be beaten by calling in a stronger player. Valor Mortis has no such option, so the only ways past a hard fight are better gear, more levels, a respec or more practice. That changes how you should approach it:
- Every boss is a solo duel. All ten bosses are designed around one player, and their attack patterns assume you are the only target. There is no splitting aggro or reviving a partner.
- There is no difficulty dial to compensate. The game ships with one fixed difficulty. Our page on the lack of difficulty settings covers the options and systems that make fights more manageable.
- Your build carries everything. Without a partner to tank or heal, defensive choices like Maximum Health, blocking upgrades and Ambers carry more weight. Since there are no armor pieces either, our guide to how defense works without armor is worth a read.
- Death has solo stakes. When you die you drop your carried Catalysts where you fell, and dying again before recovering them deletes them. Nobody can pick them up for you.
The Help the Game Does Give You
Single-player does not mean alone. Valor Mortis gives you a cast of non-player allies, and some of them matter for your progress.

- Lucjan Skawinski. The first ally you meet properly. He steps in when General Lothaire beats William on the Battlefield, and he is waiting beside a Lantern after the credits so you can carry on exploring.
- James Stewart. Runs James's Iron Bench at the Abandoned Church, where you upgrade blades and firearms. His stock grows after Chapters 5 and 9.
- Louis Moreau. Runs Louis's Laboratoire, which sells Ferrofluid Flask upgrades and other items and also expands after Chapters 5 and 9.
- The Shrike. The mysterious leader of the rebellion, who guides you to the Experiment 83 fight on The Outskirts.
- The Mice. A group you befriend through conversations and side quests in The Outskirts and the City of Orphans. Reach 10 friendship points and they reward you late in the game, including a Giant Whisker Gift worth 30,000 Catalysts.
None of these characters fights bosses alongside you in a controllable way, but between upgrades, items and shortcuts, they are the support system the game gives you in place of co-op. The one scripted exception is the Lothaire encounter at the end of Chapter I, which our first boss walkthrough explains in full.
Sharing the Game With Someone Else
You cannot play together, but there are official, platform-supported ways for a household or a pair of friends to share Valor Mortis, and in some cases avoid buying it twice:
- Steam Family Sharing. Family Sharing is one of the listed Steam features, so members of a Steam family group can borrow the game through Valve's system.
- Xbox Game Pass. The game launched day one on Game Pass, so anyone with the right subscription can play their own copy on Xbox or PC.
- Xbox Play Anywhere. The Microsoft Store version is marked Play Anywhere, which means one digital purchase covers both Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC, with Xbox cloud saves carrying progress between them.
- Steam Cloud. Steam saves sync through Steam Cloud, which is handy if you play on more than one PC. Our save file location guide explains where the files live and how to back them up.
Note that there is one playthrough save per profile, and choosing New Game overwrites it. If two people take turns on the same console or PC account, each of them should use their own system profile or Steam account, or one will wipe the other's run.
Will Co-op Ever Be Added?
Nothing announced points that way. The publisher's post-launch plan lists free updates, New Game+ in the fourth quarter of 2026, cosmetic packs and a major story DLC in 2027. New Game+ is described as a second run with tougher enemies that keeps your loot and progression, not as a multiplayer mode. Both title updates so far, 1.004 on 16 October and 1.005 on 23 October 2026, were fixes and balance changes. We found no announcement of co-op, multiplayer or online features for Valor Mortis, so treat any claim of a co-op patch with suspicion unless it comes from the developer or publisher directly.
Given how the game is built, with every boss designed as a one-on-one duel, adding co-op would be a large change rather than a quick patch. If it ever happens, it will be announced on the official Steam page and the console stores first.
What You Can Still Share With Friends
Even without co-op, Valor Mortis gives friends plenty to compare. The trophy and achievement list has 39 entries, none of them online, and Steam's global stats make a natural scoreboard. As of November 2026, about 63% of Steam players have Torn Banner for beating General Lothaire, only 26.5% have Behemoth for Captain Raphael, and just 6.2% hold every achievement. Feat achievements give you something to race each other on, too: Hoodsnatcher asks you to decapitate three enemies with a single Claymore attack, Scattershot wants five kills from one Blunderbuss shot, and Aerial Annihilation needs a headshot kill after a wall jump. Each sits under 10% of Steam players.
The Mice friendship system and the side quest choices are another talking point. The game has fifteen story choices that change rewards and dialogue but not the single ending, so two friends playing in parallel will see slightly different conversations and rewards while reaching the same conclusion. Comparing those choices is about as close to a shared run as the game gets.
Making a Solo Run Easier
If you were hoping for a friend to help you through, a few solo habits come close. Light every Lantern as you find it, so a failed boss attempt costs only a short walk. Spend Catalysts before you step through a fog wall. Upgrade the Ferrofluid Flask early, and swap Ambers before each boss rather than running one setup everywhere. Use the first General Lothaire encounter as free practice, since most guides describe it as a fight you are meant to lose and nothing is lost when you do. When a build is not working, remember that your first respec costs nothing and later ones start at just 50 Catalysts, so you can reshape your character for a single boss and change back afterward. And if you are short of levels, an hour spent looping a good farming spot usually does more for you than an hour of failed boss attempts, because every level adds Health or damage that no amount of practice can replace. Expect the story to take roughly 14 to 18 hours on your own, and more if you chase every side quest; our playtime guide breaks down where the time goes.
Bringing Extra Firepower Into a Solo Game
Without co-op, the only way to bring more power into a fight is your own character. The Valor Mortis section of the store lists a modded save for PS5 and PC that starts you with a level 264 character, every skill active, 999,999 Catalysts and all materials at 9,999, so the bosses feel closer to having a strong partner at your side. It is not available for Xbox, and you need to own the game. A PS5 platinum trophy service is listed there as well.
