On PC, the Valor Mortis save file location is %LOCALAPPDATA%\ValorMortis\Saved\SaveGames, which on a typical install is C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Local\ValorMortis\Saved\SaveGames. The graphics settings live next door in Saved\Config\Windows. On PS5 and Xbox there is no folder to browse; saves are managed through the console's saved data menu and cloud sync. Below is how to find, back up and restore your progress on each platform without letting cloud sync overwrite it.
We checked this against PCGamingWiki, an AllThings. How PC guide, the developer's 1.004 patch notes as reported by MP1ST, PowerPyx, Steam Support and PlayStation Support in November 2026.
Where Valor Mortis Saves on PC
Valor Mortis is an Unreal Engine 5 game, and like most games on that engine it keeps its saves in your local AppData folder rather than inside the install directory. PCGamingWiki lists the Windows save path as %LOCALAPPDATA%\ValorMortis\Saved\SaveGames, and AllThings. How confirms the same folder for the Steam version, noting that the saves are not stored under Steam's own userdata folder for the game's app ID (2828710).

The quickest way to open it:
- Press Windows key + R to open the Run box.
- Type %LOCALAPPDATA%\ValorMortis\Saved and press Enter.
- Open the SaveGames folder.
According to AllThings. How, after the first launch that folder contains Identity.sav, UserSettingsSaveGame.sav (which also stores some menu choices) and a steam_autocloud.vdf file. That last file is Steam's marker that the folder is synced to Steam Cloud, which matters when you restore a backup. The game itself installs under steamapps\common\Valor Mortis in whichever Steam library you chose, and AllThings. How notes that Verify integrity of game files does not touch your saves, since they are not in that folder.
If you cannot see AppData, it is a hidden folder. Typing the path into the Run box or the File Explorer address bar works whether hidden folders are shown or not.
The Settings File and the Patch 1.004 Advice
Graphics and display settings are kept separately in %LOCALAPPDATA%\ValorMortis\Saved\Config\Windows\GameUserSettings.ini, which PCGamingWiki also lists. AllThings. How describes it as the file that holds resolution, fullscreen mode, VSync, upscaling (DLSS, FSR or XeSS) and HDR output, and recommends backing it up before any manual edit and only editing it with the game closed.
This file has an official mention too. In the notes for the first title update, version 1.004 released on 16 October 2026, One More Level said performance issues were still under investigation and advised anyone who had played the Playtest or Demo to delete their settings file at AppData\Local\ValorMortis\Saved\Config\Windows\GameUserSettings.ini. That file holds settings, not progress: your playthrough lives in the separate SaveGames folder, so copy the .ini somewhere first if you want your old options back, and leave SaveGames alone. If you are seeing odd performance after carrying over settings from the demo, that is the first thing to try.
The same update also fixed an issue where the sequence after the Chapter 4 boss was not saving progress correctly, which could block progression in rare cases. If an older save of yours seems stuck there, make sure the game is fully updated before assuming the file is damaged.
How Saving Works In-Game
Knowing the folder only helps if you know what is in it. Valor Mortis does not offer manual saves or multiple save slots. PowerPyx describes it as a single playthrough save that updates automatically, and notes one useful trick: choosing Back to Menu from the pause menu forces the game to save exactly where you are standing.

Two consequences follow. First, MetaBot's reading of the game data notes that choosing New Game from the main menu starts a fresh save and overwrites your current progress, so a stray click there can cost you a full run. Second, because there is only one save, the only way to keep a checkpoint, for example before spending your scarce top-tier upgrade materials, is to copy the folder yourself. Our best weapons guide explains which material choices are permanent, and the trophy guide covers the one choice that can lock you out of a trophy.
Lanterns are the in-game checkpoints: when you die you respawn at the last one you Rekindled, and you drop the Catalysts you were carrying where you fell. A file backup is a blunt tool for that problem, because restoring it also rolls back everything else you did since. If you are worried about losing a big stack, spending it at a Lantern is the better fix; see our Catalyst farming guide for other ways to protect it.
Backing Up and Restoring on Steam
A manual backup takes a minute. AllThings. How's steps are the standard ones:
- Quit the game completely from the pause menu, not just to the title screen.
- Copy the whole SaveGames folder to another location, such as a dated folder in Documents or a USB drive.
- To restore, quit the game again and copy the backed-up files back into SaveGames, replacing what is there.
The part people get wrong is Steam Cloud. Because Valor Mortis syncs that folder, Steam can replace your restored files with the newer copy in the cloud the next time you launch. AllThings. How recommends turning Steam Cloud off for the game before restoring an older save. Steam Support's own instructions for that are: in your Steam Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, and toggle the Cloud Synchronization setting on the General tab. You can also disable cloud sync for all games under Steam Settings, Cloud tab.
Cloud sync is also what carries your run to a new machine. With it on, AllThings. How notes your Steam saves can be available on other PCs, so installing Valor Mortis on a new computer or a second drive and launching it should pull your playthrough down automatically. With it off, Steam Support warns that progress is only saved locally on the machine where it was made, which means a Windows reinstall or a wiped drive takes your save with it unless you copied the folder yourself. If you turn cloud sync off to restore a backup, remember to turn it back on afterward so your restored save gets uploaded.
Steam Support is also blunt about the limits of the cloud: because syncing is automated, support has limited ability to fix cloud problems, and lost saves are unlikely to be recoverable. That is a good reason to keep your own copy, especially before a big decision or before trying out any other save file.
Game Pass, the Microsoft Store and Xbox
Valor Mortis is also on the Microsoft Store, included with Xbox Game Pass and sold with Xbox Play Anywhere, per PCGamingWiki, which also lists Xbox cloud saves as supported. In practice that means a Game Pass player on PC and an Xbox Series X|S player on the same account share progress through Xbox cloud saves rather than a folder you manage.
PCGamingWiki's save entry lists only the %LOCALAPPDATA%\ValorMortis path, and we did not find a guide documenting a separate folder for the Microsoft Store build, so we will not guess at one. If you play through Game Pass on PC, treat Xbox cloud sync as your backup, and give it a moment to finish after you quit before uninstalling or switching devices. On an Xbox console you never browse files directly; your progress travels with your Xbox profile through the same cloud saves.
PS5 Saved Data and Cloud Storage
On PS5 you manage Valor Mortis saves through the system menu like any other game. PlayStation Support gives these paths:
- Manual upload: Settings, Saved Data and Game/App Settings, Saved Data (PS5), Upload or Delete from Console Storage, then the Upload to Cloud Storage tab.
- Download a cloud copy: the same menu, Download or Delete from Cloud Storage, then the Download to Console Storage tab.
- Auto-sync: Saved Data (PS5), Sync Saved Data, Auto-Sync Saved Data. PlayStation notes that cloud sync requires automatic updates to be enabled, and that Stay Connected to the Internet should be on in rest mode settings.
Cloud storage requires a PlayStation Plus membership, and the limit is 100 GB of PS5 saved data. If you are about to make a choice you might regret, uploading a manual copy to the cloud first gives you the same safety net a PC folder backup does. Auto-sync is per game and uploads your saved data when you close the game or put the console in rest mode, so switch it off for Valor Mortis if you want an older cloud copy to stay untouched.
Starting Fresh With a Different Save
Some players look for the save folder because they want to start from a different point entirely. The store's Valor Mortis mega modded save is one option for PlayStation 5 and PC: it starts at the very beginning of Chapter I, at the first Lantern, with a level 264 character, every skill active, 999,999 Catalysts and upgrade materials at 9,999. It is not available for Xbox, and only the save is sold, so you need to own the game.
Whatever you decide, back up your current progress first using the steps above, since Valor Mortis keeps only one playthrough save. The Valor Mortis hub lists the save alongside the PS5 platinum trophy service, and our level cap guide explains what a character at that level can and cannot do.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where are Valor Mortis saves stored on PC?
In %LOCALAPPDATA%\ValorMortis\Saved\SaveGames, usually C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Local\ValorMortis\Saved\SaveGames. They are not in the Steam install folder.
Does Valor Mortis have Steam Cloud saves?
Yes. Steam lists Steam Cloud support, and the save folder contains Steam's autocloud marker. Turn it off under the game's Properties, General tab, before restoring an old backup.
Can you manually save in Valor Mortis?
No. There is one autosaved playthrough. Choosing Back to Menu from the pause menu forces a save where you are standing.
Where is the Valor Mortis config file?
GameUserSettings.ini in %LOCALAPPDATA%\ValorMortis\Saved\Config\Windows. The developer advised demo and playtest players to delete it in the 1.004 patch notes.
Does starting a New Game delete my Valor Mortis save?
Yes. New Game starts a fresh save and overwrites your current progress, so back up the SaveGames folder or your PS5 cloud copy first.
Does Valor Mortis progress carry between Xbox and PC?
On Game Pass and the Microsoft Store, the game supports Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox cloud saves, so progress follows your Xbox account between console and PC.
