Gene-Seed locations in Space Marine 2 are not fixed: in each Operation the Gene-Seed appears at one of several possible spots, often where a Guardian Relic would otherwise spawn, so you check a short list of candidate locations rather than one marker. This guide lists the documented spots for the launch Operations (Inferno, Decapitation, Vox Liberatis, Fall of Atreus and Reliquary), explains what the Gene-Seed does for your squad's XP, and covers how to carry it home without losing it. Spot lists come from walkthroughs written in the game's first weeks, so treat them as a search route rather than a promise, as of November 2026.
We checked this against Game8's Operation walkthroughs, GameRiv's Gene-Seed list, the official Hotfix 15.1 notes on Steam and the Patch 4.0 to 13.0 notes for map additions in November 2026.
How Gene-Seeds Work in Operations
A Gene-Seed is a rare pickup that only exists in Operations, the replayable three-player PvE missions. Picking it up puts it in your inventory alone, not the squad's. If you finish the mission while still carrying it, your whole squad gets a large XP bonus, which early guides measured at about 30 percent. If you are incapacitated or killed while holding it, the Gene-Seed is destroyed and the bonus is gone.

Three rules shape how you should hunt for it.
- Only one Gene-Seed appears per mission, at one of several candidate spots. Game8's walkthroughs mark many of those spots with the note that a Gene-Seed may appear in place of a Guardian Relic.
- The carrier cannot hold a Guardian Relic at the same time, so carrying the seed removes your personal safety net against a Mortal Wound.
- Spawns were cleaned up in October 2026. Hotfix 15.1 fixed relic spawns that had become too predictable on higher difficulties after an earlier fix, and noted that low-spawn-rate pickups such as Geneseed should no longer appear outside the playable area on levels with branching paths.
The practical habit is simple: every time you would normally glance for a Guardian Relic, glance for the Gene-Seed too. Most spots sit just off the main path, in side rooms, behind crates or in dead ends that a squad rushing the objective walks straight past.
Inferno Gene-Seed Spots
Inferno, the swamp and refinery Operation on Kadaku, has the longest documented list. Game8 recorded eleven candidate spots, grouped by checkpoint.
- Swamp: behind the green box just before the bunker that holds a Dataslate.
- Swamp: shortly after the start, cross the first bridge and turn left past a burning wreck.
- Swamp: past the bridge toward the maze-like swamp, turn right and follow the path into an area that seems to lead nowhere.
- Camp: in the Astra Militarum Camp, behind the tent to the left of the cavern entrance from above, near an Armoury Data spot.
- Promethium Field: after leaving the camp, go right to a mossy rock at the edge of the map.
- Promethium Field: on the way to the refinery, take the left path under the pipe archway, near a dead tree with green storage boxes.
- Refinery: under the bridge between Generators 1 and 2.
- Refinery: right of Generator 2's outer perimeter when facing it from the main area with the Ammo Cache, among crates and barrels.
- Refinery: left of Generator 3 when facing it from the ammo box, under a table at the edge of the map.
- Abandoned Base: after the bomb is deployed, enter the facility and go straight; it is on the right behind a silver toolbox.
- Roofs: near the end of the Operation, in the left corner of the reactor room.
Game8 flags the first and third Swamp spots, the Camp spot and two of the refinery spots as places where the seed can replace a Guardian Relic, so those are the best ones to check first.
Decapitation Gene-Seed Spots
Decapitation runs through an Imperial city, a station and its ducts before the Hive Tyrant fight. Game8 lists six candidate spots, none in the Tower or the final Hive Tyrant area.

- Imperial City: after leaving the cathedral, drop down a ledge on the way to the objective; the seed sits in front of a hole in the wall on your left.
- Station: after riding the elevator up to the bridge and reaching the room with a loadout changer, look behind the elevator.
- Station: at the far end of the area where you hold out until the Hive Tyrant arrives.
- Station Ducts: after the bridge explosion, ride the elevator down; it is in a corner of the area before the objective.
- Station Ducts: while pursuing the Hive Tyrant, near the giant fans by the lift, before you lose contact with Titus. A Dataslate is nearby.
- Station Ducts: in the last area before the final fight, check the room on the left, just behind the boxes on the right side.
Because the fifth spot shares an area with a Dataslate, Decapitation is a good map for combining collectible hunting with an XP run. Our dataslate locations guide lists that Dataslate and the other one on this map.
Vox Liberatis, Fall of Atreus and Reliquary
The three launch Chaos Operations have shorter lists. For Vox Liberatis, Game8 documents seven spots.
- Landing Zone: after the Vox Communications cutscene, go outside and turn right; it is by the large red and blue containers.
- Landing Zone: before the second indoor area, check the container area on the right, behind stacked red and green containers next to a small red one.
- Landing Zone: during Find a Way to Take Down the Warp Shielding, follow the dead-end hall to the left by the large pipes, before the Cathedral doors.
- Plaza: after leaving the Cathedral, before the marble tiles toward the second Altar, check the left side by the third arched pillar.
- Plaza: just before the elevator assembly point, check the space on its right by the vents.
- Plaza: on the way to the Archives, before re-entering the Cathedral, check the right side of the iron bar gate by a covered red box.
- Archive: before the giant circular elevator in the center of the room, go right; it is by the closed gates.
Fall of Atreus has four documented spots in Game8's walkthrough: two in the Necropolis starting area (a lit room on the right of the second level, near the desks, and an open box in a dark room to the right on the lowest floor before the bridge), one in the Cemetery inside a box in front of a tomb to the right of the large staircase near the Dreadnought, and one in the Cathedral behind the objective after you use the crane and jump down.
For Reliquary, GameRiv lists one spot: on the way to the Warp Beacon after unsealing the tomb, outside the first gate, to the left near a tree.
Ballistic Engine and the Newer Operations
Ballistic Engine is the one launch Operation where the published lists we checked disagree with each other, so we are not reproducing a spot list for it. The same applies to the seven Operations added since launch: Termination (Patch 4.0), Obelisk (Patch 5.0), Exfiltration (Patch 7.0), Vortex (Patch 10.0), Reclamation (Patch 11.0), Disruption (Patch 12.0) and Purgation (Patch 13.0). We could not find a dependable, complete Gene-Seed list for those maps.
The search method still works on every map. Sweep side rooms and dead ends at each checkpoint, check every place a Guardian Relic usually appears, and pay attention to containers and crates just off the main path. Playing thoroughly also helps in a second way: the Extermination bonus rewards squads that kill most of the spawned enemies, so the slower, wider route that finds the seed tends to earn a better XP rank too. Our guide to leveling fast explains how the two bonuses stack.
Carrying the Gene-Seed Home
Finding the seed is the easy half. Delivering it is where most runs lose the bonus. These habits help.
- Give it to the hardest-to-kill player. A Bulwark with shield and banner, or a player on a defensive build, is a better carrier than a Sniper who is often isolated.
- Play the carrier as a team asset. Keep the rest of the squad between the carrier and the heaviest threats, especially during Terminus fights.
- Remember the lost safety net. The carrier has no Guardian Relic, so a second incapacitation can mean a Mortal Wound with no backup. Revive the carrier first.
- Match the difficulty to the risk. On a tier where your squad wipes now and then, a careful normal clear is worth more than a lost seed and a failed mission. Our difficulty levels guide helps you pick that tier.
- Do not chase it at the end. If the seed only turns up deep in a dangerous side area during the final fight, skip it rather than splitting the squad.
For general Operation routing, including where ammo caches tend to sit, our older Operations guide pairs well with the spot lists above.
If You Would Rather Skip the XP Grind
Gene-Seeds exist to speed up class leveling, and the store's Space Marine 2 unlock service takes that grind off the table. Its page, for PC, PlayStation and Xbox, lists every PvE class at Prestige 4 and level 25, all class perks fully upgraded and all operations completed on Absolute, applied without logging into your account. It covers content up to the 22 May 2026 update.
Other services are on the Space Marine 2 store page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Gene-Seeds spawn in the same place every time?
No. One Gene-Seed spawns per Operation at one of several candidate spots, and some of those spots share a position with Guardian Relics.
What does a Gene-Seed do in Space Marine 2?
If its carrier finishes the mission, the whole squad gets bonus XP, measured at about 30 percent in early guides.
What happens if the Gene-Seed carrier dies?
The Gene-Seed is lost and nobody receives the bonus, though the rest of the mission rewards still pay out on success.
Can you carry a Gene-Seed and a Guardian Relic?
No. The holder of a Gene-Seed cannot carry a Guardian Relic at the same time.
Are there Gene-Seeds in the campaign?
The guides we checked only document Gene-Seeds in Operations. Campaign missions have Dataslates as their collectible instead.
Which Operation has the most Gene-Seed spots?
Inferno, with eleven candidate spots documented by Game8, followed by Vox Liberatis with seven.
