Space Marine 2 Difficulty Levels Explained (2026)

In Space Marine 2, difficulty levels come in two separate ladders: the campaign uses Easy, Normal, Veteran and Angel of Death, while Operations use six threat levels, Minimal, Average, Substantial, Ruthless, Lethal and Absolute. On top of those, Stratagems and Siege each have their own Normal and Hard settings, and the Crucible endgame added in October 2026 uses six Penance tiers. This guide walks through every tier as of November 2026, what actually changes at each step and which one fits your squad.

We checked this against the official Patch Notes 3.0, 4.0, 6.0, 8.0, 13.0 and 15.0 on Steam, the January and February 2025 and September 2026 Community Updates, plus Gamer Guides' Operations breakdown, Dexerto's campaign guide and Destructoid's Lethal rewards guide in November 2026.

Every Difficulty Setting at a Glance

The table below collects every difficulty system currently in the game. The Operations ladder is the one most players mean when they talk about difficulty, because it controls Armoury Data quality, XP and the cosmetic rewards that show off your skill.

One thing to keep in mind across all of them: the developers adjust difficulty often. Ruthless was made harder in Patch 4.0, Absolute was toughened again in Patch 8.0, and in October 2026 the Game Director announced that the Hard versions of Stratagems and Siege will get a minimum level requirement. Treat any guide older than a few months, including the launch-era numbers below, as a starting point rather than a rulebook.

Campaign Difficulties: Easy to Angel of Death

The story campaign has four settings. Dexerto's launch guide describes them this way.

  • Easy: enemies are much less aggressive, and your base Armour and Health are greatly increased. Built for players who mainly want the story.
  • Normal: moderately aggressive enemies, with health and ammo you need to manage.
  • Veteran: far more aggressive enemies that punish careless play. The game itself says Veteran is the intended experience.
  • Angel of Death: the hardest setting, where enemies take more hits and death comes quickly.

Veteran was retuned early. Patch 3.0 on 26 September 2024 reduced enemy aggressiveness on Veteran for a better single-player experience and slightly reduced player health to compensate, while also making AI bots more helpful. Guides disagree about whether you can change campaign difficulty partway through a playthrough, so pick carefully at the start; if Veteran turns out to be too much, Normal still delivers the full story with the same set pieces.

Operations Threat Levels: Minimal to Ruthless

Operations launched with four threat levels, and they still form the core of PvE progression. Gamer Guides' 2024 breakdown captures the main steps: Minimal and Average spawn only Extremis-tier elites and drop Master-crafted Armoury Data, Substantial adds Terminus-tier bosses such as a Carnifex or Neurothrope and Artificer data, and Ruthless drops Relic data with a 120-second respawn timer instead of 60.

Other changes stack as you climb. From Substantial onward, your first incapacitation already gives a Mortal Wound, Stimms are less effective, and equipment drops are rarer. Patch 4.0 on 17 October 2024 then made Ruthless itself harder: ammo crates have limited refills per player, and player armour is reduced by 15 percent. The same source puts base mission XP at roughly 630 on Minimal rising to about 1,890 on Ruthless, which is why leveling players push upward; our guide to leveling fast explains how to balance that against the risk of failing.

A practical way to use these tiers:

  1. Minimal to learn a new Operation's layout, find Ammo Caches and hunt collectibles without pressure.
  2. Average is the least rewarding step for its extra danger, so many players skip quickly past it.
  3. Substantial once your class is around level 10 and you want Artificer weapons.
  4. Ruthless once your squad knows the maps and you need Relic data.

Lethal and Absolute: The Endgame Tiers

Lethal arrived with Patch 4.0 alongside the Termination Operation. Its official highlights are limited ammo crate refills per player, Majoris enemies that can become enraged and much harder to kill, and armour that only restores from finishers when you stay close to your battle-brothers. Clearing it pays cosmetics: Destructoid lists the Survivor's Helm for finishing all seven Operations available at the time on Lethal and a battle-damaged Power Sword skin for completing Termination on Lethal.

Absolute is the sixth and final threat level, added in the Datavault Update (Patch 6.0) on 6 February 2025. The developers describe it as built around new, more diverse enemy packs with limited resources and ammo. You need at least one Operation completed on Lethal to unlock it, and it rewards a bloodstained Combat Knife and a new pauldron, with a Tyranid Hand added in Patch 13.0 for completing 13 Operations on Absolute.

Absolute was retuned after players found it easier than expected. In February 2025 the developers reported a win rate of about 60 percent on Absolute against roughly 50 percent on Lethal, and Patch 8.0 responded by letting a second Terminus enemy appear, raising Carnifex, Neurothrope and Helbrute health by 33 percent on Absolute and raising level-specific Terminus health by 66 percent, with the Hierophant Bio-Titan excluded. Even so, the Game Director said during the September 2026 Q&A that Absolute win rates sit around 70 to 80 percent depending on the map. In other words, a coordinated squad clears it most of the time; a random lobby with mismatched builds will not.

Stratagems, Siege and Crucible: Separate Systems

Three newer modes do not use the six-tier ladder at all.

  • Stratagems, added in Patch 10.0, only have Normal and Hard. Difficulty comes from Battlefield Conditions that change daily and weekly, and the payout is Accolades; our Accolades guide lists the weekly values for each setting.
  • Siege also has Normal and Hard. Patch 13.0 made enemies grow stronger quicker and earlier, and past wave 15 the mode keeps escalating indefinitely. The new Chaos variant follows the same pattern; see our Chaos Siege guide.
  • Crucible, added in Patch 15.0, is available only to level 25 classes. You pick Penances (personal debuffs) from the Chapter Chaplain on the Battle Barge across six tiers, with a minimum number of Penances per tier, for example 2 at Tier 1 and 6 at Tier 3. Penances are class-specific; the Tactical, for instance, can choose Penances that weaken its Auspex Scan.

Which Difficulty Should You Pick?

Choose by goal rather than pride. For story, Normal or Veteran. For collectibles or learning a map, Minimal. For leveling, the hardest Operations tier your squad wins nearly every time, because a failed Ruthless run pays far less than a clean Substantial one. For Relic Armoury Data, Ruthless and up. For cosmetics and bragging rights, Lethal and Absolute with a premade team.

Build choices matter more as you climb. On Lethal and Absolute, enraged Majoris enemies and scarce ammo reward reliable melee defence, which is why understanding fencing, balance and block weapons pays off at the top tiers. Squad composition helps too: Operations allow only one Marine of each class, so plan roles before you queue, and our co-op tips for Operations squads cover the teamwork side.

Mistakes to Avoid When You Move Up a Tier

Most failed runs on a new tier come from the same handful of habits that worked fine one step lower. Watch for these before you raise the threat level.

  • Treating ammo as unlimited. From Ruthless upward, ammo crates have limited refills per player, so a Heavy who empties his weapon into trash mobs leaves nothing for the Terminus fight. Switch to melee on Minoris enemies and save ammo for elites.
  • Spreading out. On Lethal and Absolute, armour only comes back from finishers when you stay close to your battle-brothers, so a player who wanders off loses his main source of sustain.
  • Ignoring enraged enemies. Enraged Majoris hit harder and take longer to kill. Patch 15.0 also lets heavy attacks break the block stance of enraged enemies such as the Bonesword Tyranid Warrior, which is worth practising.
  • Wasting Guardian Relics. A Relic can stop a Mortal Wound from stacking once, so carry it to the risky part of the map rather than leaving it behind.
  • Skipping the practice tools. Patch 13.0 added a Battle Simulator where you can fight chosen enemies and test loadouts, which is a cheap way to learn a boss before risking an Absolute run.
  • Queuing with an underleveled class. Crucible already requires level 25, and a level requirement is coming to the Hard end-game modes. Even where nothing stops you, a fresh class drags a high-tier squad down.

Starting With a Maxed Account

If your goal is the rewards rather than the climb, the store's Space Marine 2 unlock all service lists all Operations completed on Absolute difficulty, all classes at Prestige 4 and level 25 and every weapon version unlocked, for PC, PlayStation and Xbox. Its page says it is applied without logging into your account, and it describes content up to the 22 May 2026 update, so newer modes like Crucible are not listed.

More options are on the Space Marine 2 store page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the hardest difficulty in Space Marine 2?

Absolute is the hardest Operations difficulty, described by the developers as the sixth and final tier. In the campaign, Angel of Death is the hardest setting.

How do you unlock Absolute difficulty?

Complete at least one Operation on Lethal difficulty.

What difficulty is Veteran in Space Marine 2?

Veteran is the third of four campaign settings and the one the game calls the intended experience. It sits between Normal and Angel of Death.

What does Lethal difficulty change?

Limited ammo crate refills per player, enraged Majoris enemies, and armour that only restores from finishers when you stay near your squad.

Does higher difficulty give more XP?

Yes. Higher Operations threat levels pay more XP per completed mission, and in March 2025 the developers confirmed that the newer difficulties grant more XP.

Can you play Absolute solo?

Yes, with AI bots or in a private lobby, but it is tuned for coordinated three-player squads, and ammo and armour limits hit harder without teammates.
