Fencing vs block vs balance in Space Marine 2 comes down to how each melee weapon handles defence: Fencing weapons are the fastest with the most forgiving perfect parry but the lowest damage, Balance weapons sit in the middle with a parry stagger that is strong against crowds, and Block weapons are the slowest and hardest-hitting, trading the classic perfect parry for Perfect Blocks that build Adrenaline Surge stacks. The type is set by the weapon version you equip, not by the weapon family. This guide explains each type as it works in November 2026, how the developers have changed them since launch and which to pick for your class.
We checked this against the official Patch Notes 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, 9.0, 10.0 and 13.0 and Hotfixes 5.1 and 7.1 on Steam, the April 2026 Community Update, the September 2026 developer Q&A recap and Game8's defence-type explainer in November 2026.
What Fencing, Balance and Block Actually Mean
Every melee weapon version carries a Defence type, a melee-only property that decides how your parry behaves. Game8's explainer describes it as the stat that sets a weapon's perfect parry window, and notes that you change it by picking a different version of the same weapon in the Armoury rather than through a separate setting.

Patch 9.0 on 29 July 2025 set out the current stat principles for all PvE melee versions:
- Balanced weapons have moderate damage and moderate speed.
- Fencing weapons offer the fastest speed but the lowest damage.
- Block weapons are the slowest but deliver the highest damage.
The same patch made Relic versions always stronger than Artificer versions, so within one family you are choosing a defence style at the top tier rather than trading raw quality. Two things sit outside this system. The Bulwark's shield block is unaffected by melee defence types, and enemies can have their own block stances; Patch 15.0, for example, lets heavy attacks break the block stance of enraged enemies such as the Bonesword Tyranid Warrior. Neither of those is what the Fencing, Balance and Block labels describe.
Fencing: The Parry Specialist
A perfect parry, timed just as an enemy attack lands, is one of the core loops of melee in this game. It opens a Gun Strike or Execution and helps restore armour, since Patch 3.0 also made perfect parries restore armour when you kill Minoris enemies. Fencing weapons make that loop easiest.
The current timing comes from Patch 4.0 on 17 October 2024: Fencing weapons have a perfect parry window of the same length as Balanced weapons, but it starts from the very first frame of the parry animation. In practice, that means a Fencing parry catches attacks you react to late, which is why so many players found it forgiving on high difficulties.
- Strengths: the most reliable perfect parries, fast attacks, a natural fit for builds that live on Gun Strikes.
- Weaknesses: the lowest damage of the three, and since Patch 5.0 a slightly smaller perfect parry stagger radius, so it handles big crowds less well.
- Best against: small numbers of dangerous enemies, such as Majoris warriors and duels on the hardest tiers.
Heroic examples include Argent Edge, a Fencing Combat Knife, and Ultima Ratio, a Fencing Omnissian Axe, both added in Patch 12.0. In the September 2026 Q&A, the developers said Argent Edge gained a stagger-on-parry mechanic after testers found it dull.
Balance: The Crowd-Control Middle Ground
Balanced weapons were the default for most players at launch, and Patch 5.0 on 10 December 2024 gave them a clearer identity. Their perfect parry stagger radius was greatly increased, and their Master-crafted, Artificer and Relic versions gained 10 percent damage. The Game Director's stated goal was that Balanced weapons would be good against big crowds.

The parry window itself is moderate: the same length as Fencing since Patch 4.0, but without the instant start, so you need slightly cleaner timing. The payoff is that a well-timed Balanced parry staggers more of the pack around your target, which buys space for the whole squad.
- Strengths: moderate damage and speed, a wide parry stagger that controls swarms, and solid all-round stats.
- Weaknesses: less forgiving than Fencing when you react late, less damage than Block.
- Best against: Tyranid hordes and mixed waves, such as those in Siege, where several enemies swing at once.
Both Heroic weapons from Patch 15.0 are Balance types: the Frost Axe, a Power Axe that builds Power Charges from Executions, and the Power Maul, a One-Handed Thunder Hammer built around charged Ground Slams. If you want to compare every Heroic variant by type, our Heroic weapons guide lists them all.
Block: Perfect Blocks and Adrenaline Surge
Block weapons work differently from the other two, and the difference comes from Patch 5.0. The Game Director explained that melee on higher difficulties relied too heavily on the parry into Gun Strike flow, which made Fencing a universal choice. To give players another option, Block weapons were reworked around a new mechanic.
- Time your block as an attack lands to get a Perfect Block.
- Each Perfect Block grants an Adrenaline Surge stack, up to three.
- Adrenaline Surge stacks greatly increase melee damage and are spent on your next melee attack.
- Attacking with all three stacks releases massive area damage, staggers enemies and restores one Armour Segment.
Patch 5.0 also gave Block versions at Master-crafted, Artificer and Relic tiers 20 percent more damage, which made them the dedicated damage dealers. Later fixes rounded the system out: Hotfix 7.1 made every perk that triggers from a perfect parry also trigger from a perfect block, and Patch 10.0 fixed Adrenaline Surge discharges that were failing to stagger and sped up Block versions of the Chainsword and Power Sword.
The Heroic Block weapons from Patch 13.0 lean into this. The White Scars Chainsword raises its block stacking to three with a bigger bonus on the third stack, and the Encarmine Axe lets you step out of the Power Stance after a perfect block and perform a Power Backstep with the next held attack.
- Strengths: the highest damage, big area discharges, armour back on a full stack.
- Weaknesses: the slowest attacks, and you have to bank stacks before the payoff.
- Best against: players who like trading blows deliberately and dumping damage into elites.
How the System Has Changed Since Launch
If an older guide disagrees with what you feel in game, it is probably out of date. The defence types have been reworked several times.
- Patch 3.0, 26 September 2024: a bug fix reduced the Fencing perfect parry window to 20 frames, with 10 frames of vulnerability at the end, instead of a 30-frame window over the whole animation.
- Patch 4.0, 17 October 2024: Fencing windows were set to the same duration as Balanced, starting from the first frame.
- Patch 5.0, 10 December 2024: Block weapons gained Perfect Block and Adrenaline Surge, Balanced parry stagger grew and Fencing stagger shrank slightly, and normal melee damage went up across the board.
- Hotfix 5.1, 16 December 2024: a bug that made the Fencing window shorter than intended was reverted.
- Hotfix 7.1, 24 April 2025: perfect-parry perks began triggering from perfect blocks.
- Patch 9.0, 29 July 2025: melee versions were rebalanced around the speed and damage principles above.
Launch-era guides that say Block weapons simply cannot do anything useful on defence describe the game before Patch 5.0. That is no longer true.
Choosing a Defence Type for Your Class and Difficulty
There is no single best type; the developers explicitly rebalanced them so each has a role. A few practical guidelines help.
- Learning the game or pushing into Lethal and Absolute with uncertain timing: start with Fencing. The early window forgives late reactions, which matters most where enemies hit hardest. Our difficulty levels guide explains what those tiers add.
- Playing crowd-heavy content such as Siege or Tyranid Operations: try Balanced for the larger parry stagger.
- Running a melee damage build on Assault or a melee Tactical after the Patch 15 rework: consider Block, especially with perks that trigger on parries, since those now work on perfect blocks too.
- Using Gun Strike perks heavily: Fencing or Balanced, because Gun Strikes come from perfect parries.
- Unsure: own one version of each type for your main weapon and swap between loadouts; Patch 13.0 lets perk loadouts follow your weapon loadouts.
Weapon versions are unlocked with Armoury Data and Requisition in the Armoury, and the Heroic variants cost Accolades; our Accolades guide covers how to earn them. For a broader look at which weapons perform best, see our older best weapons rundown.
Testing Every Version Without the Grind
Trying all three defence types means unlocking multiple versions of each weapon. The store's Space Marine 2 unlock service says it unlocks all weapon versions and their perks, fully upgrades class perks and offers to reset perks to your preference, for PC, PlayStation and Xbox, without logging into your account. Its page lists content up to the 22 May 2026 update and does not mention Heroic variants.
Other options are on the Space Marine 2 store page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is fencing or balanced better in Space Marine 2?
Fencing is more forgiving for perfect parries and better against a few strong enemies. Balanced deals a bit more damage and its parry stagger handles crowds better.
Can block weapons parry in Space Marine 2?
They use Perfect Blocks instead. Each one builds an Adrenaline Surge stack, and perks that trigger on perfect parries also trigger on perfect blocks since Hotfix 7.1.
How do I change a weapon's defence type?
Equip a different version of the weapon. The defence type belongs to each version, so unlocking more versions gives you more choices.
What does Adrenaline Surge do?
Each stack boosts your next melee attack. At three stacks, the attack deals heavy area damage, staggers enemies and restores one Armour Segment.
Does the Bulwark shield count as a block weapon?
No. Shield blocking is separate and is not affected by the melee defence type of your weapon.
Which defence type is best for Absolute?
Many players favour Fencing for its early parry window, but Balanced and Block are viable; pick the one that fits your build and timing.
