Phantom Blade Zero has eight outfits for Soul, and every one of them is purely cosmetic. Two are available from the first minute, two unlock after you see any ending, two more are tied to the secret Perfect ending route, and the last two come only with the Deluxe Edition. You change them from the map screen under Character and then Appearance, where you can also hide Soul's headgear on any look.
We checked the outfit list and unlock conditions against GameRant's and KeenGamer's outfit guides, Game8's outfits and New Game Plus pages, and the Wikipedia entry for the game in November 2026. Ending names are mentioned below, but nothing about what happens in them.
All Eight Outfits and How They Unlock
GameRant and KeenGamer, both published in the first days after launch, list the same eight outfits with the same conditions. Here is the full set before we go through each group:

| Outfit | How to unlock |
|---|---|
| Black Scarf (Fugitive) | Default outfit on a new game |
| Sanguine | Available from the start as an alternate look |
| The Hunt | Reach any ending |
| Kindred | Reach any ending |
| Blizzard | Meet the secret Perfect ending requirements without completing every Long Pillar challenge |
| Legacy | Pre-order bonus, or reportedly the secret Perfect ending |
| Blood-Steel Form | Deluxe Edition |
| Wulin Legend | Deluxe Edition |
KeenGamer is explicit that none of these change Soul's damage, defense, weapon stats or abilities. Pick the one you like looking at; you are not sacrificing anything by ignoring the others.
How to Change Outfits
The menu path is the same for every outfit, and it trips up players who go looking in the equipment screen first:
- Open the map screen.
- Move to the Character tab.
- Switch to Appearance.
- Choose the outfit you want and confirm.
The same Appearance screen holds a headgear visibility option, so you can show or hide Soul's hat on any outfit. GameRant and KeenGamer both mention this toggle, and it is handy because a few looks change character quite a bit with the hat removed. Game8 describes the location slightly differently, as the Character Screen, but it is the same menu reached through the map.
Because outfits are cosmetic, there is no reason to swap them for specific fights. That makes them one of the few systems in the game where you can simply choose what you enjoy, unlike the careful loadout decisions covered in our difficulty guide for harder modes.
The Two Starting Outfits
Every player has two outfits from the beginning:

- Black Scarf (Fugitive): Soul's default look when you start a new game.
- Sanguine: already unlocked as an alternative. Game8's in-game description calls it light traveling gear and notes that a streak of dark crimson follows Soul when Ghoststep is used. KeenGamer clarifies that this streak is visual only, not a movement or combat bonus.
The item descriptions are worth reading even for outfits you never wear, because they are written as small pieces of lore rather than stat blurbs. Game8 quotes the Legacy text, for example, as "No armor, only a grandmaster's composure," followed by lines about every doubt in Soul's mind finally finding its answer. If you like piecing the world together, open each new outfit's description in Appearance before you switch back to your favorite.
Do not confuse the Sanguine outfit with the Sanguine weapon. Game8 lists Sanguine separately as a main weapon that can be Soul Tempered into the Infernal Rouge, one of its top weapon picks. The two only share a name, and equipping the outfit has nothing to do with the blade.
Outfits From Endings (Spoiler-Light)
Four outfits are tied to finishing the game. Game8 explains that ending-based outfits are added to your inventory once the game is complete, so you will see them the next time you open Appearance after the credits. The conditions:
- The Hunt and Kindred: both unlock after reaching any ending. KeenGamer notes these do not require the secret ending or the Long Pillar challenges, so a normal first clear is enough.
- Blizzard: unlocks if you meet all the requirements for the secret Perfect ending but do not complete every Long Pillar challenge. It is an unusual condition, since you are rewarded for leaving something undone.
- Legacy: also a pre-order bonus (covered below), but GameRant says it can be earned through the secret Perfect ending. KeenGamer treats that alternative route as uncertain, so pre-order owners are the only group with a confirmed path.
Guides do not all use the same names here. Wikipedia lists four endings for the game, one of them exclusive to 66 Days, while the outfit guides refer to a secret Perfect ending. Either way, the optional story content matters: the Purple Quests in particular are tied to unlocking endings according to Game8, which is why our side quest guide is worth reading before your final chapters. For the ending conditions themselves, the existing endings guide goes into detail.
Long Pillars are also where the Bloodline Awakening Purple Quest begins: Game8 says you start it by interacting with a Long Pillar in Weeping Creek Valley, and its rewards include the Counterstrike Bracers. Since Blizzard depends on not finishing every Long Pillar challenge, it is easiest to plan for it on a run where you deliberately leave one challenge undone.
Deluxe Edition and Pre-Order Outfits
The remaining looks are tied to how you bought the game:
- Blood-Steel Form: Deluxe Edition only. Its description talks about Sha-Chi boiling through the armor and tempering it a deep crimson.
- Wulin Legend: Deluxe Edition only, presented as the look of a legendary wandering swordsman.
- Legacy: Game8 lists it as a pre-order Early Access bonus.
These cannot be earned through play on the Standard Edition. Game8's platforms page notes that the Standard and Digital Deluxe editions are both sold on the PlayStation Store, Steam and the Epic Games Store, and that physical PS5 editions (Standard, Deluxe and Ultimate) were announced on October 22, 2026, for release in 2027, with dates and prices still unannounced as of November 2026. The existing editions guide compares what else each version includes.
Planning Your Unlocks Across Playthroughs
Because two of the ending outfits need different conditions around the Perfect ending and the Long Pillars, collecting everything usually takes more than one run. A sensible plan:
- First clear: play normally and reach any ending. The Hunt and Kindred unlock.
- Second run: aim for the secret Perfect ending while deliberately leaving at least one Long Pillar challenge incomplete. That covers Blizzard and possibly Legacy.
- Optional third run: complete the Long Pillars as well if you want the full Perfect ending experience.
Keep one detail in mind while you plan: the ending outfits only appear after the credits, so there is no way to preview them mid-run. If a particular look is your goal, decide which ending conditions you are chasing before the final chapters rather than after, since some of the optional quests that feed the endings close at points of no return.
New Game Plus makes the later runs faster, since Game8 and PCGamesN both say equipment and skills carry over while quests reset. Our New Game Plus guide explains how to start a new cycle from the Mountain of Imprisonment. If you want your repeat runs to look their best on console, our PS5 graphics mode guide covers which mode gives the sharpest image.
Books: The Other Collection Behind the Wardrobe
Completionists who chase outfits usually end up chasing books too, because both fill out the same end-game checklist. Books in Phantom Blade Zero are assembled from pages scattered across the Wulin, and each finished page goes into your Archives. Game8's books database, still being filled in as of November 2026, lists 22 books ranging from four pages (The Mirage Estate's Past) to 18 pages (Reflections and Fragments of the Mandate). A few examples of what the collection covers:
- The Order: nine pages, several of them already in your Archives when the Prologue ends.
- Mystery of Transcension: eight pages, mostly inside the Weeping Creek Valley Sha-Chi Tower.
- The Herald and The Herald's Experiment Notes: twelve and seven pages, tied to the puppet mystery around the Crimson Manor.
- People of Pangzhen and Wulin Tales: seventeen pages each, the two largest town and story collections.
- The "Four Axes" Case Files: eight pages, one of which depends on finishing the Festering Secret Tale in time.
Reading is not purely for lore. Game8's Remnant Dust guide says that picking up notes and adding them to your Archives pays out Remnant Dust, and some Tales, such as Four Fierce Axes and Don't Forget Me, start from a book you pick up. Archives also carry over into New Game Plus according to PCGamesN, so pages you find on your first run stay found.
Want Every Outfit and Book Unlocked?
If multiple endings to collect a wardrobe is not how you want to spend your time, the store sells a mega save with all outfits and books. Its page lists everything in the standard mega save (all 33 main weapons, 73 fully upgraded accessories, 17 fully upgraded medicines, 99,999,999 currency and 9,999 skill points) plus every outfit and every book unlocked, delivered as four fresh Cycle 1 slots set up for different difficulties.
Read the limits before ordering: the product page says it works on PlayStation 5 and PC, with no Xbox or Nintendo Switch 2 version, it does not include the game itself, and the platinum is a separate listing. Compare it with the standard save and the other products on the Phantom Blade Zero hub.
