Phantom Blade Zero Endings: True Ending and How to Get It

Phantom Blade Zero has two main endings, a default ending you get automatically and a true ending, and only the true ending carries a trophy, With Heart and Blood. To reach it you must complete every quest marked with a purple icon in your journal, most of them before you enter the Mirage Estate, then finish the Bloodline Awakening quest before the final area. Game8 also catalogs two further variations, one with unconfirmed requirements and one that only plays if you run out of days in the 66 Days mode, so the count depends on which guide you read.

We checked this against PowerPyx's true ending guide and trophy roadmap, the Fextralife wiki's endings page, Game8's endings, missables and New Game Plus pages, Wikipedia's gameplay summary and Rock Paper Shotgun's boss list in November 2026. Story details sit behind clearly marked spoiler warnings further down.

How Many Endings Are There?

The guides disagree, and the disagreement is mostly about definitions. PowerPyx and the Fextralife wiki both describe two endings: a Normal ending, which is the default if you have not met the extra conditions, and a True ending, which replaces it after the normal final boss once you have done everything required. Game8 lists four: Final Battle (its name for the true ending), Annihilation (the default), Long's Roar and Undying Grudge. Wikipedia's summary simply says the story culminates in one of several possible endings.

In practice the split works like this. Two endings come from a normal playthrough and everyone agrees on them. Long's Roar is listed by Game8 with its requirements still marked as to be determined, so treat it as unconfirmed until more guides document how to trigger it. Undying Grudge, which Game8 also calls the Day 0 ending, is exclusive to the 66 Days difficulty and plays when your death counter runs out, which makes it closer to a special game-over scene than a story branch you choose. If you are chasing trophies, none of this changes your plan: the true ending is the only one that counts toward the platinum.

True Ending Requirements, Step by Step

PowerPyx explains the rule cleanly: gold-icon quests are the main story and are always required, while purple-icon quests are mostly optional but must all be finished to trigger the true ending. Before entering the Mirage Estate, it lists these purple quests in order:

  1. Deep in the Valley
  2. Illusion of Inanis
  3. Sha-Chi Powered Boat
  4. Allure of Vanity
  5. Illusory Pipa
  6. Pillars of Kunlun
  7. Whence the Weeping
  8. The Herald's Illusion
  9. Crimson Manor
  10. Secrets at the Heart of the Lake

After you enter the estate, the last requirement is Bloodline Awakening, which completes once you clear all five Long Pillar encounters; they are marked on your map after you find the first one. Game8 and the Fextralife wiki describe the same journey in terms of items: both Crystal Puppet Eyes (one from the Crimson Manor and one from the Mountain of Imprisonment), all four Acolyte Masks from bosses reached through odd scarecrows, the Illusory Pipa rebuilt from three parts by Myst in Pangzhen, the six Firefly's Memory Flowers in the Village of Lu for Secrets at the Heart of the Lake, and Quick Hand Zhang's full questline. The eyes are placed in a hidden mirror realm in a snowy part of Meigu Lake that you reach by boat once you hold all four masks.

As for order, PowerPyx's roadmap suggests playing normally until the game gives you the objective to enter the Mirage Estate through the Green Serpent House, then pausing the story to work through the purple quests. Once you reach Mount Soulrend, finish Bloodline Awakening and any stragglers, and only then trigger the ending. That sequence keeps every requirement reachable without forcing you to track deadlines from the first hour.

Deadlines: The Mirage Estate and The Last Chance

Only two moments really matter for the true ending. The first comes at the end of the main quest The Four Serpent Houses, when you open the door behind the Green Serpent House in Pangzhen and head into the Mirage Estate. If any pre-estate purple quests are unfinished, the game warns you before you go through, and PowerPyx stresses that apart from these timing cutoffs, none of the required quests can be failed by other actions.

Game8 adds a related trap: the Mountain of Imprisonment, the source of one Crystal Puppet Eye, can be missed if you push into the Mirage Estate before finding it, because its entrance near Meigu Lake is locked off once you enter the estate. The second deadline is the Bell called The Last Chance on Mount Soulrend. It always shows a warning, even if you have done everything, because you cannot leave the final area until the ending plays. Keep a manual save before both points; the game offers 20 manual slots plus three rotating autosaves, according to PowerPyx. The same guide recommends clearing every remaining side quest before you progress through Mount Soulrend, since certain ones become missable there even though they have nothing to do with the true ending.

Spoiler Warning: The Default Ending

Spoiler warning: the next two sections describe how the story ends. Skip ahead to the section on the other endings if you have not finished the game.

According to Game8, the default ending, which it calls Annihilation, follows your victory over Leng Tu and Meng Hua, the Merciful Lady of the Blossom Veil, on Mount Soulrend. Meng Hua does not truly die; a cutscene shows her reviving, mocking Soul and destroying the entire Wulin. PowerPyx confirms that Meng Hua is the normal final boss and that this ending has no trophy attached, so trophy hunters need the second one regardless of how they feel about the first.

Spoiler Warning: The True Ending

If you have met every requirement, defeating Meng Hua is not the end. Game8 describes Zuo Shang arriving and asking Soul to follow him through a golden pillar into an alternate version of Soul's childhood home, where you fight him one last time; Rock Paper Shotgun's boss list names this final form Zuo Shang, The True Lóng. A sequence of quick-time events follows, and the story closes with Soul remembering his history with Zuo Shang, realizing his true identity and obtaining the Mechanical Heart, while Zuo Shang throws himself from the mountain.

This is the ending that resolves the conflict between the two former brothers, and it unlocks the trophy and achievement With Heart and Blood, described in game as All Comes to Light. If you want to know more about Zuo Shang, Mu Xiaokui and the rest of the cast before you go in, our character guide covers them with its own spoiler warning.

The Other Endings: Long's Roar and Undying Grudge

Game8's third entry, Long's Roar, plays out on Mount Soulrend too: Zuo Shang kills Meng Hua and leads Soul through the golden pillar, the two talk about their hearts, and a fight follows that you cannot win, ending with Zuo Shang transforming and banishing Soul to die on the mountain. Game8 has not yet published its trigger conditions, and neither PowerPyx nor the Fextralife wiki lists it, so we are treating it as unconfirmed rather than guessing at requirements.

Undying Grudge belongs to the 66 Days mode, which you unlock by finishing the game once and which ends your run permanently after 66 deaths. When the counter reaches zero, Game8 says a cutscene shows Zuo Shang pouring wine over Soul's grave in front of his childhood home. No trophy is tied to 66 Days, so this scene exists purely for players brave enough to risk it.

After the Credits: Free Roam, New Game Plus and Outfits

Finishing either main ending does not lock you out of the world. PowerPyx confirms you can return to every area to collect anything you missed, apart from missable tales, and Game8 notes that special outfits unlock depending on which ending you completed. To replay, use any Bell to reach the Puppet Cell in the Mountain of Imprisonment and talk to Inanis; New Game Plus carries over your equipment, archive collection and skills while resetting quests and key items, so a second attempt at the true ending starts with a much stronger Soul.

Soulframe Liang has said nothing new is hidden behind New Game Plus, so there is no secret extra ending waiting there. If you are planning a cleanup run, our existing trophy guide and roadmap pairs well with this page, the open world guide shows where each region's content sits, and the length guide estimates how long a true ending run takes.

Missed the True Ending Window?

Plenty of players only learn about the purple-quest rule after the Mirage Estate warning has come and gone, and replaying 25 or more hours for one trophy is a big ask. If that is you, the store's Phantom Blade Zero Platinum Trophy Service handles the full list, from the first bronze to the platinum, directly on your PS5 account. You choose how the unlock dates look: instant time-stamps that land within seconds, or a spread of dates with realistic gaps between trophies.

Only PS5 accounts are covered, and the listing adds that any DLC-only trophies would need the matching DLC. The modded save and the rest of the store's options for the game are on the Phantom Blade Zero hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many endings does Phantom Blade Zero have?

Two main endings, Normal and True, according to PowerPyx and the Fextralife wiki. Game8 lists four by also counting Long's Roar and the 66 Days Day 0 scene.

Can you miss the true ending?

Yes. If you enter the Mirage Estate with purple-icon quests unfinished, you get the default ending unless you reload an earlier save or start New Game Plus, which resets quest progress.

Is there a trophy for the normal ending?

No. Only the true ending awards a trophy, With Heart and Blood, which PowerPyx rates as the hardest on the list.

Does New Game Plus add another ending?

No. Soulframe Liang said nothing new is hidden behind New Game Plus; it simply lets you replay with your equipment and skills.

What happens if you die 66 times in 66 Days mode?

The run ends permanently. Game8 says a special cutscene, which it calls Undying Grudge or the Day 0 ending, plays when the counter hits zero.

Where do I start New Game Plus after the ending?

Travel by Bell to the Puppet Cell in the Mountain of Imprisonment and talk to Inanis.
