How Long Is Phantom Blade Zero? Story and Platinum Hours

Plan on roughly 25 to 30 hours to finish the main story of Phantom Blade Zero at a steady pace, and closer to 40 hours if you want the platinum trophy and most of the side content. Director Soulframe Liang gave the 25 to 30 hour figure for an experienced player who does not get stuck on bosses, and Insider Gaming, which played through to the platinum before launch, logged about 30 hours for the campaign and roughly 40 for everything. Boss attempts, side tales and the true ending requirements are what stretch or shrink that number.

We checked this against Soulframe Liang's October roundtable comments as reported by GamerFuzion, Insider Gaming's length guide, PowerPyx's trophy roadmap and true ending guide, Game8's chapter, difficulty and New Game Plus pages, and Rock Paper Shotgun's boss list in November 2026.

Every Estimate So Far, From Pre-Release to Launch

The answer has moved over time, mostly because the early figures were plans and the recent ones come from people who actually reached the credits. S-GAME's first answer, given in a Discord Q&A in May 2023, was 30 to 40 hours for the main story alone. Reports from Chinese outlets in January 2025 trimmed the campaign to 20 to 30 hours with around 20 more hours of side content. Since the October 2026 launch, the figures have settled in the middle of that range.

The launch-era numbers are the ones to trust. Liang's figure assumes someone comfortable with action games who keeps moving, while Insider Gaming's 30 hours describes a natural pace on the normal setting rather than a rush or a completionist sweep. If you comb every side path, read every book page and seek out every optional boss, expect to land at or a little above the 40-hour mark. Collectibles run their own loop on top of that, because Sha-Chi Amber fragments, Blackstone fragments and Memory Flower petals each feed a different set of skill upgrades.

What Fills Those Hours: 11 Chapters and 61 Bosses

Game8 counts 11 main chapters including the prologue: Diverging Paths, Reckless Pursuit, Against the Flow, Steel and Steam, Snake's Reflection, Heartless Remnants, Town of Death, The Heart's Trail, The Way Forward, Stalemate and A Soul's Worth. They unfold across a chain of connected regions, from Weeping Creek Valley and the Crimson Forest through the Village of Lu, Pangzhen and Meigu Lake to Mount Soulrend at the end, which our open world explainer walks through region by region.

Bosses are the bigger time sink. Rock Paper Shotgun tallied 61 of them across the game's seven maps and stresses that many are optional, so a story-only run fights noticeably fewer. Some early fights, such as the Aberrant Three-Faced Puppet in Weeping Creek Valley, are deliberately tougher than their position suggests, and the game lets you leave them and come back stronger. Side content piles on more: PowerPyx's guide author counts 30 side tales, and the trophy list alone asks you to clear five Banyan Tree challenge arenas and five Long Pillar encounters spread across the map.

Difficulty and Boss Retries Decide Your Total

Liang was candid that he cannot predict individual times and that the biggest variable is how long a player stays stuck on a boss. Four difficulty settings change that math: Wayfarer is the story-friendly option, Pathbreaker is the standard experience, Hellwalker gives enemies more aggressive and adaptive behavior, and 66 Days keeps Hellwalker's enemies while capping you at 66 deaths. Game8 confirms you can switch difficulty whenever you like from the Options screen under Game Difficulty, and no trophy or achievement depends on the setting you pick.

Several design choices keep retries short. Dying in a boss's second phase can put you back at the start of that phase rather than the beginning of the fight, as Mobalytics notes in its launch-week guide to The Hunt, and PowerPyx notes that you lose nothing when you die. On the other hand, defeated enemies never respawn, a decision Liang explained by saying the team wants everything in the game to be valuable, so there is no grinding loop to lean on when a boss walls you. Your options are to explore for upgrades, change weapons or lower the difficulty, which is why our soulslike comparison spends time on how this differs from the genre's usual habits.

Side Tales, the True Ending and Missables

The true ending adds the most planned work. PowerPyx explains that it requires completing every quest marked with a purple icon in the journal, finishing a batch of them before you enter the Mirage Estate late in the game, then clearing all five Long Pillars through the Bloodline Awakening quest before the final area. Game8's requirements also include gathering four Acolyte Masks, both Crystal Puppet Eyes and the repaired Illusory Pipa, and finishing Quick Hand Zhang's questline; separately, his treasure-hunting trophy asks you to return 17 treasures across five regions. Our endings guide lists the steps behind clear spoiler warnings.

Seven trophies are missable, and almost all of them hinge on side tales that fail if you push the story too far, so the efficient habit is clearing tales region by region. PowerPyx suggests keeping a manual save at the start and end of each region, and the game leaves plenty of room for that with 20 manual save slots plus three rotating autosaves. After the final boss you can free-roam every area to sweep up collectibles before deciding whether to begin New Game Plus.

Habits That Save You Hours

You can trim a surprising amount of wasted time without skipping anything worthwhile. Most of it comes down to knowing when backtracking pays off and when a region is about to change for good.

  • Treat Bells as your hub. They are rest points that double as fast travel points, so there is rarely a reason to walk back through an area you have already cleared.
  • Backtrack right after a new Phantom Edge. Some barriers and ledges need specific secondary weapons, such as the Dread Axe or the Hunter's Chain Sickle, so a quick sweep of earlier regions as soon as you earn one catches what you skipped.
  • Exhaust NPC dialogue. Many tales only start from extra dialogue options, and Game8 notes that once you meet a quest giver, a quest pin keeps their location marked on your map.
  • Finish the early tales before Bai Chilian. Game8 warns that after you defeat her at the end of the Crimson Forest, residents of the Outpost and the Thieves' Camp turn hostile and their quests close.
  • Experiment with weapons freely. Reforging a weapon returns the materials you invested, so testing a new favorite does not cost you hours of gathering later.

How Long the Platinum Takes

PowerPyx estimates 30 to 40 hours for the platinum and rates the list 4 out of 10 on Easy, or 6 out of 10 on Normal. A single playthrough is enough because difficulty has no bearing on trophies and the true ending is the only ending with a trophy attached. The PS5 list holds 36 trophies, while the Steam version lists 66 achievements. The hardest item is the true ending itself, and the rest asks for some light upgrading too, such as taking one weapon and one Phantom Edge to the level 30 cap and soul tempering ten of each after you meet Myst in Pangzhen. You also need ten complete Memory Flowers and 30 accessories, though with more than 60 accessories in the game you can miss plenty and still get there.

For the full order of operations, our existing trophy guide and platinum roadmap walks through it, and the boss guide helps with the fights most likely to eat your evenings.

New Game Plus and 66 Days Add Replay Time

Once the credits roll, Game8 says you can use any Bell to travel to the Puppet Cell in the Mountain of Imprisonment and talk to Inanis to begin New Game Plus. Weapons, Phantom Edges, accessories, your archive collection and skills carry over, while quest progress, map progress, key items and your remaining days reset. Liang told reporters that nothing new is hidden behind New Game Plus, so it is there for people who want to replay with a stronger build rather than something you must do.

Finishing the game on any difficulty also unlocks 66 Days, which keeps Hellwalker's tougher enemies and ends the run for good after your 66th death. Neither mode is needed for the platinum, so the extra time is entirely optional. Because every death now spends one of your 66 days, expect to play far more cautiously than on your first visit to the Wulin, and budget your time accordingly.

If the Platinum Is the Last Thing Standing

Some players reach the credits, notice the missable tales they skipped, and decide a second 30-hour run is not how they want to spend their evenings. For them, the store's Phantom Blade Zero Platinum Trophy Service unlocks every bronze, silver and gold trophy plus the platinum on a PS5 account. The listing offers two time-stamp styles: everything unlocking within a few seconds, or trophies spread across different dates with realistic gaps.

The service is PS5 only, and the listing notes that its counts follow the game's standard PSN trophy list. You can compare it with the modded save and the rest of the options on the Phantom Blade Zero hub.
