Phantom Blade Zero Characters: Soul, Allies and Rivals

Phantom Blade Zero YouTube thumbnail: Phantom Blade Zero: 10 Things You NEED TO KNOW

The central characters of Phantom Blade Zero are Soul, an elite assassin of the Order who is framed for murdering its patriarch, and the people bound up in that betrayal: Zuo Shang, his former sworn brother turned enemy; Mu Xiaokui, the Order's Young Mistress; and Mó Yuan, leader of the Bastion of Mó and Soul's father, brought to life by Donnie Yen. Around them sit allies and quest givers such as Yu'er, Forge, Myst and Quick Hand Zhang, plus a roster of 61 bosses, many with tragic stories of their own. The first sections below stay at the level of the official marketing; late-game identities sit behind a clearly marked spoiler warning.

We checked this against S-GAME's official site and Steam page, Soulframe Liang's PlayStation Blog posts and Phil Hornshaw's launch-week PlayStation Blog feature, Game Informer's voice cast report, Wikipedia's cast summary, Game8's chapter, NPC and boss pages, PowerPyx's trophy guide and Rock Paper Shotgun's boss list in November 2026.

Soul: The Framed Assassin With 66 Days

Soul serves the Order, which S-GAME describes as an elusive but powerful organization, until he is framed for the murder of its patriarch and gravely wounded in the manhunt that follows. A mystic healer keeps him alive, but the makeshift cure lasts only 66 days, so the whole story runs against that clock as he hunts the people behind the conspiracy. Wikipedia names the patriarch as Mu Tianmiao and the healer as the Flesh Sculptor, who offers Soul a choice between a hollow heart that strips away emotion and a tainted heart that will kill him in 66 days; he takes the tainted one.

Soulframe Liang has described Soul as a classic Eastern hero, a xiake who says little, moves fast and stays warm inside despite a cold exterior, always trying to help the weak even though his own days are numbered. Soul is the only playable character and there is no character creator, so everything you customize is his weapons, accessories and outfits. On screen, his likeness and facial performance come from model and stage actor Jia Xiongkai, according to Wikipedia. In English he is voiced by Roger Craig Smith, whom Game Informer reported as Soul's new voice just before launch, citing S-GAME; earlier trailers used a different actor, Jay Maksenuk, which is why Soul sounds different in older footage.

Zuo Shang: The Sworn Brother Turned Enemy

Zuo Shang is the first boss you face, in the prologue chapter Diverging Paths, and his in-game description sums up the relationship in two lines: once Soul's closest friend, now his sworn enemy. Wikipedia's synopsis describes the two as former blood brothers whose duel leaves both of them with fatal wounds to the heart. He fights with a sword called Aureate, channeling Golden Sword Energy along the blade, and Game8 lists his title in that opening fight as the Order's Shadow Sovereign.

The cast list underlines how central he is. Film academy student Zhang Xince portrays Zuo Shang, and music director Caisheng Bo gave Soul, Mu Xiaokui and Zuo Shang their own themes, all derived from the same A minor melody so they blend together, which is a neat musical hint at how tightly the three are linked.

Mu Xiaokui, the Order and Its Hunters

The Order is the antagonist you feel from the first minute, because it is the organization doing the hunting. Its most prominent face is Mu Xiaokui, the Young Mistress of the Order, played by actress Zhang Jinzhi and fought as a required boss at the end of the Village of Lu. Game8 notes that a secret third phase of her fight only appears if you complete her questline, so her story rewards players who chase side content.

The Order's enforcers are just as memorable. The Hunt, Hunter of the Order, is a former comrade of Soul's, as S-GAME's pre-order post put it, and he chases you through the prologue and Weeping Creek Valley in two separate fights. Shadow Wardens such as Blaze, Cavalrybane, Soulclaimer and Heartpiercer recur as elite bosses, while one friendly Shadow Warden near the Valley Sha-Chi Tower gives you the tale A Severed Mindseal. Then there is Inanis, whom Game8 describes as a high-ranking member of the Order who cannot enter the Waking Realm and appears to Soul as an illusion; she is also the character you speak to when you want to start New Game Plus.

Mó Yuan and the Gold-Masked One: Donnie Yen's Roles

S-GAME revealed Mó Yuan in its 11-minute pre-order trailer as the man cradling an infant: the Leader of the Bastion of Mó, portrayed through facial and motion capture by Donnie Yen, and described by Soulframe Liang on the PlayStation Blog as Soul's father. Yen has also served as creative consultant on the game since 2023, shaping its overall kung fu style and action design, and Wikipedia lists him as Mó Yuan in the English cast as well.

The PlayStation Blog's launch-week feature adds a second Donnie Yen role: the Gold-Masked One, a man you meet in the illusory realm called the Discordance, who challenges Soul to vicious duels with sword slashes, kicks, punches and unblockable throws. Rock Paper Shotgun's boss list counts four separate encounters with him across Weeping Creek Valley, the Crimson Forest and Meigu Lake, and Game8 recommends a defensive, parry-first approach because he reacts to everything you do, the kind of read-and-punish duel our soulslike comparison examines in detail.

Allies, Merchants and Quest Givers

Soul does not travel completely alone. Game8 describes non-player characters as quest givers, merchants or both, and several become fixtures of your run:

  • Yu'er, a brewer's daughter who escaped from Pangzhen, meets Soul in Weeping Creek Valley and drives a chain of healing tales, starting with the Flesh Lily you can recover from Hua, Deadly Betrothed.
  • Forge runs the camp smithy near the Outpost Bell in Weeping Creek Valley and unlocks equipment upgrades, which you can then access from any Bell.
  • Myst, whom you meet in Pangzhen, handles Soul Tempering, a one-time upgrade per weapon that needs a unique material.
  • Quick Hand Zhang is found caged near the Trail of Cages Bell in the Crimson Forest. Freeing him earns the Quick Hand Pendant, which raises one-handed weapon damage by 10 percent, and opens his shop and treasure-hunting questline.
  • The Old Archer near the Outpost Bell rewards his tale with the Feather Bow, an early ranged option.

Dialogue choices matter more than you might expect. A monk in the Village of Lu asks whether you believe in the Lady of the Veil, and answering that you do not earns the Agarwood Prayer Beads accessory, according to Game8. Our guide to how the Wulin is laid out shows where these characters live, region by region.

Bosses With Stories of Their Own

Many antagonists are tragic rather than evil, a theme the PlayStation Blog's launch-week feature leans into. Hua, Deadly Betrothed, is an early optional boss who summons spider lilies that sap your strength; after you beat her you learn that she was used by the man she was to marry and that her rage ended in the massacre of the whole wedding party. Defeat her and you can claim her Scarlet Wraithblade. Jing Ye, The Outlaw, attacks on horseback, throws dirt in your face, and fights on foot with a spiked shield and a huge sword that drinks your blood to heal him.

Others draw on Chinese folk traditions. Flame, the Lion Dance Grandmaster, reflects lion dance choreography that S-GAME says was guided by masters from Guangdong, and the Chief Disciple of the Seven-Stars fights alongside a formation of disciples. Rock Paper Shotgun counts 61 bosses in all, and our boss guide covers how to approach the hardest of them.

Spoiler Warning: Who Waits at the End

Spoiler warning: this section names late-game bosses and the true final opponent. Skip to the next heading if you want to discover them yourself.

Mó Yuan is not only a figure from Soul's past; Rock Paper Shotgun lists him as a boss in the Mirage Estate late in the game. The climb up Mount Soulrend ends with Leng Tu, Herald of the Veil, and Meng Hua, the Merciful Lady of the Blossom Veil, who is the normal final boss according to PowerPyx. If you have met every true ending requirement, Zuo Shang returns once more as the true final boss, listed by Rock Paper Shotgun as Zuo Shang, The True Lóng, and the true ending resolves the conflict between the two former brothers. Our endings guide explains every ending and what triggers it.

Meet Every Rival With a Full Arsenal

Most of Soul's weapons are claimed from the bosses above, which means a first playthrough holds much of the roster back until late in the story. If you would rather meet Zuo Shang, Mu Xiaokui and the rest already carrying every blade, the store's Phantom Blade Zero mega modded save is described as holding the complete arsenal, 33 main weapons and 27 Sha-Chi weapons by its count, with every accessory and medicine maxed out.

Its listing limits it to PlayStation 5 and PC, ruling out Xbox and Nintendo Switch 2, and the game itself is not included. Look for the separate PS5 trophy service on the Phantom Blade Zero hub.
