Phantom Blade Zero Difficulty Modes Explained and Compared

Phantom Blade Zero has four difficulty settings: Wayfarer (easy), Pathbreaker (normal), Hellwalker (hard) and the unlockable 66 Days, which plays like Hellwalker but ends your run for good after 66 deaths. You can change between the standard modes from the Options menu at any time, no trophy is tied to difficulty, and as of November 2026 a patch has already softened one notorious boss on the two easier settings. The real question is which one fits how you play, and that depends on more than enemy damage.

We compared Push Square's difficulty feature, Game8's difficulty, 66 Days and patch notes pages, Beebom's mode explainer and the Wikipedia entry for the game in November 2026.

The Four Modes Side by Side

All four settings change how aggressive enemies are and how hard they hit, but the harder ones also change how bosses behave. Push Square, writing from its review playthrough, described each mode this way:

  • Wayfarer: enemies are slightly less aggressive, deal less damage and have guards that break more easily. Game8 adds that Soul deals more damage here and hints appear more often.
  • Pathbreaker: enemies are fairly aggressive and deal moderate damage, and guards take a little time to break. Beebom calls it the experience the developers intended.
  • Hellwalker: enemies are very aggressive and hit harder, and parries become the main way to break guards quickly. Wikipedia notes this mode uses more advanced adaptive AI.
  • 66 Days: enemies appear to share Hellwalker's stats, but you only get 66 lives for the whole run.

Beebom's explainer makes an important point about the harder settings: they do not just inflate health bars. Bosses gain extra skills and attack patterns, and the AI shifts its attacks based on how you have been fighting. That is why Hellwalker feels like a different game rather than the same fights taking longer.

Which Modes Are Available From the Start

Here the sources do not fully agree, so it is worth being precise. Push Square says the three standard modes are available from the beginning and that 66 Days is the only one you have to unlock. Beebom, on the other hand, says Hellwalker becomes available after unlocking New Game Plus. Game8's difficulty page lists all three standard modes as switchable from the Options screen without mentioning a gate.

Push Square's description comes from a full review playthrough and matches Game8's, so the more likely situation is that Hellwalker is selectable on a first run. If your menu shows otherwise, a first clear will settle it either way. What every source agrees on is 66 Days: you unlock it by finishing the game, and Push Square adds that it cannot be switched to during a playthrough; you have to pick it when starting a new game. Game8 says a clear on any mode unlocks it.

How 66 Days Actually Works

The rules are simple and unforgiving. According to Wikipedia and Game8:

  1. The counter starts at 66.
  2. Every death removes one day.
  3. When the counter reaches zero, the run ends permanently and the game restarts.

Game8 frames 66 Days as a mode for players who already know the game, and its survival advice reflects that: manage Sha-Chi carefully and use weapon swaps to keep the bar full, learn attack patterns so you block and dodge less wastefully, take out enemy healers first in groups, and max your skills and upgrades early. Wikipedia also lists one ending, Undying Grudge, as exclusive to 66 Days, which gives completionists a concrete reason to try it.

Sixty-six deaths sounds generous until you count how many attempts a hard boss can take on a first meeting. The realistic way to approach the mode is as a victory lap rather than a learning run. Before starting, it helps to have:

  • A full clear on Pathbreaker or Hellwalker, so every boss pattern is familiar rather than new.
  • A rough route in mind, including which optional bosses you will skip because the reward is not worth the risk.
  • A habit of resting at every Bell before a fight, since that is where your medicine and Remnant Sparks refill.
  • A plan for crowds, because group fights with healers drain lives faster than most duels.

Treat every death early in the run as information about where your plan is weak, not just a lost day. Every life spent on early enemies is one fewer for the late-game bosses, where the margin for error is smallest, so play the opening regions more carefully than feels necessary.

Because enemies hit at Hellwalker strength and every death costs a day, your consumables matter more here than anywhere else. A defensive medicine pair such as Kuye Dew with a big heal is worth planning in advance, and our medicine guide lists which brews do what.

Changing Difficulty Mid-Run

For the three standard modes, Game8 says the setting can be changed at any time: open the Options screen, find Game Difficulty and pick a new mode. That flexibility is useful in a few specific situations:

  • A boss wall: drop to Wayfarer for one fight that is blocking your progress, then switch back once you are through.
  • Exploration stretches: you can lower the setting while mapping a new region and raise it again before the boss.
  • Trying the hard mode early: since no trophy is tied to difficulty, you can test Hellwalker for a chapter and back out without consequences.

Game8 confirms no achievement is tied to any difficulty, including 66 Days, so finishing on Wayfarer costs you nothing on the trophy list. If you are chasing the platinum, the existing trophy guide covers what actually counts.

What the November 4 Patch Changed

A patch arrived on November 4, 2026, and one change is specifically about difficulty. Game8's summary of the patch notes says Hua, Deadly Betrothed now uses certain attacks, including her grapples, less often on Wayfarer and Pathbreaker, while Hellwalker and 66 Days are unchanged. The goal was to make story progress smoother on the easier settings.

The same patch added a few quality-of-life options worth knowing about when you are tuning your experience:

  • An option to enhance hit sound effects, so landed blows and Power Surges stand out more.
  • A customizable Interact button on both controllers and keyboard.
  • A shader compilation change that shortens startup once shaders are compiled.
  • Fixes for progression blockers, combat issues and characters getting stuck in the scenery.

If you play on PlayStation 5, the graphics mode you choose affects how responsive parries feel, which matters most on Hellwalker. Our PS5 performance guide explains which mode Digital Foundry recommends for combat.

Which Difficulty Should You Pick?

Matching the mode to your goals is more useful than chasing the hardest label:

  • You mainly want the story: Wayfarer. Enemies are weaker, Soul hits harder and hints show up more often. You lose nothing on trophies.
  • First time with this kind of combat: Pathbreaker. It is the default the developers built around, and Push Square's advice is that you can always raise the difficulty once you have a feel for it.
  • Experienced with parry-heavy action games: Hellwalker. The adaptive bosses and extra attack patterns are the main reason to play it, and parries become essential rather than optional.
  • Second playthrough: New Game Plus on Hellwalker, or a fresh 66 Days run once you have cleared the game. Our New Game Plus guide covers what carries over into a second cycle.

Whatever you choose, the fundamentals do not change between modes: manage Sha-Chi, use weapon swaps to refill it, and learn when to parry instead of block. The existing combat guide goes deeper into those mechanics.

Gear That Makes the Hard Modes Fairer

On Hellwalker and 66 Days, your loadout does a lot of the heavy lifting. A few pieces come up again and again in the guides we checked:

  • Reflex Device: widens parry and perfect dodge timing, which matters most on the mode where parries break guards fastest.
  • Bashpole: Game8's pick for 66 Days, thanks to its guard break and area sweeps that interrupt groups.
  • Aureate and Infernal Rouge: Game8's top weapon recommendations for 66 Days. Note that Aureate comes from the true ending route, so it is a second-run tool.

Phantom Edges in particular can turn crowd fights that would otherwise drain your lives, and our Phantom Edge rankings explain which pairs cover each other best.

Starting a Hard Run With Your Gear Ready

A 66 Days attempt normally means beating the game first and then rebuilding your kit. The store's mega modded save includes four fresh Cycle 1 slots aimed at exactly this: two set up for the easy, normal and hard range (one with fully upgraded weapons, one with level 1 weapons and upgrade resources) and two set up for 66 Days (again, one fully upgraded and one at level 1). It also lists all 33 main weapons, 73 fully upgraded accessories, 17 maxed medicines and 9,999 skill points.

It is a PlayStation 5 and PC product only, you need to own the game, and the platinum trophy is sold separately. Everything else for the game is on the Phantom Blade Zero hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you change difficulty in Phantom Blade Zero?

Yes, for the standard modes. Open Options and change the Game Difficulty setting at any time. 66 Days is the exception: it must be chosen when you start a new game.

How do you unlock 66 Days?

Finish the game once. Then start a new game and select 66 Days. You get 66 lives for the whole run, and the run ends permanently if the counter hits zero.

Does difficulty affect trophies?

No. Game8 reports that no trophy is tied to any difficulty, including 66 Days, so an easy playthrough does not lock anything on the list.

Is Hellwalker available on the first playthrough?

Push Square says all three standard modes are available from the start and Game8 says you can switch among them from Options at any time, while Beebom says Hellwalker opens after New Game Plus. The first two agree, so it is most likely selectable from the start.

Is Phantom Blade Zero hard on normal?

Pathbreaker is demanding but fair, with fairly aggressive enemies and moderate damage. Most of the difficulty spikes come from bosses, which is why the November 4 patch eased one of them on the lower modes.

Is there an ending exclusive to 66 Days?

Yes. Wikipedia lists the Undying Grudge ending as available only in 66 Days, alongside three other endings in the standard modes.
