Phantom Blade Zero Best Medicine: Top Picks and Pairings

Phantom Blade Zero YouTube thumbnail: Phantom Blade Zero How to Upgrade Medicine

The best medicine in Phantom Blade Zero for most fights is Kuye Dew, which cuts incoming damage by 20% for 15 seconds while restoring 40% HP, and it pairs well with Merciful Dew or Phantom Brew as a second slot. Aggressive players should look at Lament Draught for its damage bonus, while Green Serpent Brew is the answer to status-heavy bosses. Because you can only carry two medicines at once, the right pair matters more than the total you have collected.

We checked this against GameSpot's medicine location guide, Game8's medicine, best medicine and upgrade pages, and KeenGamer's accessory list in November 2026.

How Medicine Works

Medicine sits alongside your Healing Gourd as a second layer of recovery. GameSpot explains that you have two medicine slots, each medicine has a set number of charges, and those charges refill whenever you rest at a Bell or respawn after dying. Game8 adds that a medicine is never used up permanently: you only have to find each one once, and it stays in your inventory even at zero charges.

That design changes how you should think about them. They are not rare consumables to hoard; they are tools you choose before a fight, like weapons. A few principles follow from that:

  • Use charges freely between Bells. Saving a charge you never spend is the most common way players waste medicine.
  • Pick one heal and one utility. Two pure heals overlap, while a heal plus a buff covers more situations.
  • Swap before bosses. You change medicines in the Character inventory menu, so it costs nothing to load a boss-specific pair at the last Bell.

The Healing Gourd you start with restores 40% HP with three charges in GameSpot's listing, which is a useful baseline when judging everything else.

Every Medicine at a Glance

GameSpot's guide counts 17 entries including the starting Healing Gourd. The base effects and charges below come from that guide, with the Ritual Wine charge count from Game8. Upgrades raise both the effect and the number of uses, so treat these as starting values.

The Best Picks and Why They Win

Game8 ranks Kuye Dew, Lament Draught, Green Serpent Brew, Phantom Brew and Ritual Wine as its top five. Looking at the numbers, each one earns its place for a different reason:

  • Kuye Dew: the only top pick that combines a solid heal with damage reduction. Drinking it just before a boss's big combo turns a lethal string into a survivable one, and four base charges make it reliable.
  • Lament Draught: a 30-second, 10% damage bonus is long enough to cover an entire burst phase. It suits players who would rather end fights quickly than outlast them.
  • Green Serpent Brew: clearing every status and adding 75% resistance is far stronger than any raw heal in fights built around Burn, Poison or Bleed.
  • Phantom Brew: a big heal plus a second of Intangible, during which no attack can hit you. Game8 notes the intangible window grows with upgrades, which makes it an emergency button.
  • Ritual Wine: pure value for elemental builds, since 50% faster buildup means status effects land far more often.

Two honorable mentions deserve a look. Merciful Dew is the biggest straight heal outside the Longevity Tonic, with five charges, and the Longevity Tonic itself is a full refill with only two uses, ideal for the final phase of a long fight.

Pairings for Different Situations

Since only two fit, think in pairs. These combinations come straight from the effects above:

  • General boss pair: Kuye Dew plus Merciful Dew. One stops burst damage, the other refills you between phases.
  • Status bosses: Green Serpent Brew plus Kuye Dew, so you can cleanse and still have a defensive heal.
  • Aggressive damage race: Lament Draught plus Phantom Brew. Buff up, push hard, and keep the intangible heal for the hit you did not see coming.
  • Long exploration stretches: Everflow plus Merciful Dew. Everflow refills a use when you defeat enemies after it runs dry, which stretches the distance between Bells.
  • Phantom Edge builds: Forbidden Concoction for 10% more Edge damage, paired with any strong heal.

Accessories can push these further. The Medicine Case increases medicine healing by 20%, and our accessory guide covers whether it beats the other support options for your slot count. On Hellwalker or in a 66 Days run, where a few extra mistakes can end a run, the defensive pair matters most; the difficulty breakdown explains what changes on each mode.

Where to Find the Strongest Ones

A few top medicines are tied to quests or late areas, so it helps to know the route. GameSpot gives these locations:

  • Kuye Dew: take the Crimson Forest Tunnel Crank from a cavern near the Outlaw Trap Bell, use it to reach an underground section, and check the ledge in the building that overlooks the starting area.
  • Merciful Dew: once you have the Flaming Mane, burn the vines in southwest Pangzhen, climb onto the slum rooftops and collect both Memory Flowers for the A Mother's Heart quest.
  • Green Serpent Brew: given by Xie Xiaorong, the Apprentice Healer, at the Green Serpent House in Pangzhen.
  • Lament Draught: a chest on the second floor of the shrine in the Training Grounds Depths of the Mandate Encampment, the area where you fight Yubi.
  • Phantom Brew: gather all four Acolyte Masks and take them to the Four Guardians' Mirror Bell on Meigu Lake's western edge, then clear the Discordance realm.
  • Ritual Wine: a hidden cavern shrine in the Mirage Estate, past a log you can mantle over on the way down to the Training Grounds.

GameSpot flags the Mirage Estate as a point of no return, so if you plan to keep exploring, leave it until your other optional quests are done. Three of these medicines sit in the second region, and our Crimson Forest guide lists the rest of what that area hides.

Upgrading Medicine to Level 6

Medicine upgrades open when you reach the Green Serpent House in Pangzhen and meet the healer there. Game8 says that after that first meeting you can upgrade medicine at any Bell, up to level 6, and each level either strengthens the effect or adds a use. The material changes by tier:

  1. Levels 1 and 2 use Apprentice Healer's Memory.
  2. Levels 3 and 4 use Skilled Healer's Memory.
  3. Levels 5 and 6 use Master Healer's Memory.

These memories appear in the world as purple-glowing pickups, and Game8 notes Quick Hand Zhang also sells them. GameSpot warns that, unlike some other materials, picking one up does not pause the game; it just flashes on the right side of the screen, so they are easy to miss. Upgrade your two most-used medicines first rather than spreading memories thin. If you plan to start New Game Plus later, upgraded gear comes along with you, which our New Game Plus guide explains.

Medicine Mistakes That Cost Runs

Most deaths that a medicine could have prevented come from the same handful of habits. Fixing them is free, and it often matters more than finding one more brew:

  • Drinking slow heals at low HP. Kuye Dew, Merciful Dew and the Focus Pill restore health over several seconds. Used at a sliver of health, the first hit during that window erases the heal. Drink them early, during a gap in the boss's pattern, and keep the instant Healing Gourd for emergencies.
  • Using Phantom Remedy mid-combo. GameSpot notes that taking a hit interrupts its recovery, so it belongs in a lull, not in the middle of an exchange.
  • Forgetting the Sha-Chi Blood Catalyst's downside. Its combo damage buff comes with Soul catching fire, so do not pair it with fights where you are already burning, and keep a cleanse handy if you rely on it.
  • Leaving buffs on the shelf. Lament Draught lasts 30 seconds. Drinking it right before a staggered boss or a Power Surge gets far more out of it than sipping it at random.
  • Never changing the pair. The medicine you equipped in Weeping Creek Valley is rarely the right one for a late status-heavy boss. Treat the two slots like loadout choices and revisit them every few hours.

The underlying idea is timing. Phantom Blade Zero rewards reading an enemy's rhythm, and medicine is part of that rhythm rather than a panic button.

Short on Remnant Dust for Upgrades?

Remnant Dust is the only currency in the game, and Game8 notes it funds upgrades to weapons, Phantom Edges, accessories and medicines as well as purchases at shops such as Quick Hand Zhang's. If your problem is a thin wallet rather than missing items, the store's Remnant Dust and materials save edit works on the save already on your account, so your story and gear stay where they are. The Remnant Dust package raises every save slot to 999,999,999 Dust, and a separate package raises the weapon upgrade materials you already hold to 9,999.

It is PS5 and PC only, you need your own copy and an existing save, and it only raises materials you have already picked up rather than adding new ones. Everything else for the game is on the Phantom Blade Zero hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many medicines can you equip in Phantom Blade Zero?

Two at a time. You assign them from the equipment or Character inventory menu, and you can swap them at any time outside combat.

How do you refill medicine charges?

Rest at a Bell. GameSpot notes charges also refill when Soul dies and respawns, and the Everflow can recover a use by defeating enemies once it is empty.

Where do you upgrade medicine?

Meet the healer at the Green Serpent House in Pangzhen first. After that, upgrades are available at any Bell using Healer's Memory materials.

What is the strongest healing item?

The Longevity Tonic restores all HP but has only two charges. For repeated big heals, Merciful Dew restores 60% over 10 seconds with five charges.

Are medicines consumed permanently?

No. Each medicine stays in your inventory once found; only its charges deplete, and they come back at the next Bell.

Is Kuye Dew missable?

It is a world pickup in the Crimson Forest reached through the Tunnel Crank route, and none of the guides we checked list it as missable, but grabbing it on your first pass saves a trip back.
