Does Phantom Blade Zero Have Multiplayer or Co-Op?

No. Phantom Blade Zero is a single-player game with no online co-op, no local co-op and no PvP: Steam lists it only as single-player, and the PlayStation Store lists it as a one-player game. S-GAME did talk about multiplayer endgame dungeons back in 2023, but nothing like that shipped when the game launched on 29 October 2026, and Game8 reports that no release plan for multiplayer content has been confirmed since.

We checked this against the Steam and PlayStation Store listings, MP1st's report on S-GAME's 2023 Discord Q&A, Game8's multiplayer and cross-progression pages, PowerPyx's trophy roadmap, the PlayStation Blog's State of Play post and Wikipedia's development history in November 2026.

What the Store Pages Actually Say

The quickest way to settle a multiplayer question is the feature list on each storefront, and both are unambiguous. Steam's features block for the game reads Single-player, Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud and Family Sharing, with no online or co-op entries, and the PlayStation Store lists the PS5 version as one player, the same answer on both storefronts we checked.

The trophy list points the same way. PowerPyx's roadmap counts 36 trophies on PS5, all of them offline, with zero online trophies, so nothing in the platinum requires another person. The guide also confirms a single playthrough is enough for every trophy, on any difficulty, which is consistent with a game built for one player from start to finish.

The 2023 Multiplayer Plans That Did Not Ship

The confusion is understandable, because multiplayer was on the table early on. In a Q&A on the game's Discord in May 2023, reported by MP1st under a headline announcing that multiplayer had been confirmed, S-GAME said endgame content unlocking after the story would include various multiplayer dungeons, boss rushes and rogue-like abysses. Game8 adds that in a July 2023 interview Soulframe Liang clarified that the main story would stay single-player while multiplayer was being considered for certain endgame activities.

The game that launched three years later is a different shape. Game8's multiplayer page, updated in late October 2026, says Liang's recent statements describe Phantom Blade Zero as a single-player game and that there is no confirmed plan to release multiplayer content, including the endgame dungeons discussed in 2023. Whether those ideas were cut for good or could return in an update is unknown, so treat any claim of a co-op mode as rumor until S-GAME announces it.

Part of the change is scale. Wikipedia's development history says S-GAME originally envisioned a smaller game, and that the reception at the May 2023 PlayStation Showcase convinced the studio to increase the scale and commit fully to the project. Soulframe Liang's launch letter on Steam adds that the studio cancelled its other projects in development and kept expanding production. S-GAME has never publicly tied those decisions to the missing multiplayer modes, so the fair summary is simply that the 2023 endgame ideas are not in the launch game.

Why S-GAME Built It Around One Player

Game8 reports that Liang said in an October 2026 interview that the team developed the game without multiplayer or PvP in mind, which let it focus on combat and weapon variety without balancing everything for competitive play. That fits the rest of the design. Wikipedia's development history describes a collective enemy AI built on formation logic, so groups of enemies attack as a coordinated unit rather than a mob, which suits a game where every encounter is built around Soul alone.

There is a personal thread too. According to Wikipedia, Liang said that years before the 2023 reveal, Feng Ji, the producer of Black Myth: Wukong, encouraged him to make a single-player game that could captivate players worldwide. The 2023 PlayStation Blog post that introduced the game also framed it around authentic kung fu choreography and handcrafted animation, ambitions that are far easier to deliver when the camera only ever has to follow Soul. Even the premise is solitary: the official description has Soul roaming the Wulin alone and hunted, with only 66 days to live.

No Invasions, Messages or Player Summons

Because the game borrows tough bosses and checkpoint Bells from soulslikes, some players expect that genre's online layer as well. None of the store listings or launch guides we checked mention features such as invasions, player messages or summoning other players into your world, and Steam lists no online features at all. Our soulslike comparison covers the other places where the game breaks from that formula.

The rules that usually push players toward co-op are softer here too. PowerPyx notes that you lose nothing when you die, so there is no dropped currency to race back for, and defeated enemies never respawn, which Liang explained as a way to make everything in the game valuable. With no corpse run and no farming loop, the classic reasons to call in a helper mostly disappear.

The only help that joins Soul in a fight is computer-controlled. The State of Play post invited players to use summons to assist them in battle, and Game8's guides sort Phantom Edges into types that include Summoning alongside Ranged and Destructive ones. Summons are the nearest thing the game has to a helper, but they are AI allies that come from the gear you equip, not other people joining your world.

Cross-Play, Cross-Progression and Sharing a Copy

Cross-play needs multiplayer, so it simply does not apply here. What players usually mean is moving a save between machines, and the news there is limited: Game8 found no announced cross-progression between PS5 and PC and no confirmed way to transfer save data, so changing platform means a fresh start. Within a platform you are covered, since the Steam version syncs through Steam Cloud and PS5 saves can be backed up to PlayStation Plus cloud storage. If you are deciding where to buy, our platform explainer covers why there is no Xbox version, and the editions guide compares what each storefront includes.

Steam's Family Sharing is the closest thing to sharing the experience: the store page lists support for it, so the game can be shared within a Steam family group. Friends can still compare progress through achievements and trophies, with 66 achievements on Steam and 36 trophies on PS5.

What Solo-Only Means for Difficulty

In co-op games, a stronger friend is the safety valve for a wall-like boss. Here, the valve is the difficulty menu. Game8 confirms you can change difficulty at any time from the Options screen, and no trophy or achievement is tied to the setting, so dropping to Wayfarer for one fight costs you nothing. Some bosses are kinder than in many soulslikes as well: Mobalytics' guide to The Hunt notes that dying in his second phase restarts you at that phase rather than at the very beginning. If one particular fight is the problem, our existing combat guide covers the parrying, dodging and attack reading that stand in for a co-op partner here.

For players who want the opposite, Hellwalker brings more advanced and adaptive enemy behavior, and 66 Days caps an entire run at 66 deaths. Those modes turn solo play into a personal challenge you can compare with friends afterward, even if nobody can step in to help.

Where the Replay Value Comes From Instead

Without co-op or PvP to stretch its life, the game leans on variety and challenge. The State of Play post promised more than 30 main weapons and 25 secondary weapons called Phantom Edges, and the launch-week PlayStation Blog feature explains that you claim most of them from bosses you defeat. Weapons can be reforged to recover the materials you invested, so trying a new build costs very little, and Rock Paper Shotgun counts 61 bosses to test those builds against.

  • Banyan Tree challenges. PowerPyx describes five arenas that send waves of enemies at you before a rematch with a boss you have already beaten, and a death only returns you to the wave you failed.
  • New Game Plus. Inanis in the Puppet Cell starts a fresh run with your equipment, archive collection and skills carried over, according to Game8.
  • Harder settings. Hellwalker's adaptive enemies and the 66-death limit of 66 Days give experienced players a reason to replay the whole campaign.
  • Side tales. There are around 30 by PowerPyx's count, and Game8 notes that dialogue choices can change how an NPC's quest progresses and even how it ends.

No Co-Op Partner? Bring the Whole Arsenal

Without a friend to carry you through a tough fight, your build is your backup. The store's Phantom Blade Zero mega modded save is built around four fresh Cycle 1 slots: two on the listing's Easy, Normal or Hard settings and two on what it labels Secret 66 Days, with one slot in each pair holding fully upgraded weapons and the other level 1 weapons. The save as a whole also lists the complete weapon roster, maxed accessories and medicines, and a deep pool of currency and skill points.

The listing confines it to PS5 and PC, so Xbox and Nintendo Switch 2 players are out of luck, and you bring your own copy of the game. The separate trophy service lives on the Phantom Blade Zero hub.
