Phantom Blade Zero Mods: What Exists on PC and the Risks

Phantom Blade Zero YouTube thumbnail: The BEST Mods for Phantom Blade Zero So Far!

PC players already have a growing set of Phantom Blade Zero mods on Nexus Mods, from camera, FOV and ultrawide fixes to Souls-style controller layouts, difficulty tuners and an experimental mod that makes enemies respawn. They arrived within days of the 29 October 2026 launch, they are unofficial, and some need a separate script loader, so they carry real risks to your install and your saves. Every mod covered here is for the PC version, and several things players mod in other games are already adjustable in this game's own menus.

We checked this against The Outerhaven's launch-week mod roundup, DSOGaming's DLSS 5 test, S-GAME's support FAQ and Soulframe Liang's launch letter on Steam, the Steam store page and Game8's settings and difficulty guides in November 2026. We describe what the mods do and the risks involved; we do not provide installation walkthroughs for cheat or trainer tools.

What Mods Are Available So Far

On launch day, The Outerhaven rounded up the first wave, all hosted on Nexus Mods. Most fall into three groups: visual and camera tweaks, gameplay tuners, and controller layouts. The list below reflects that roundup, so check the mod pages themselves for newer uploads, current versions and compatibility notes before you rely on it.

  • PBZ Tuner AIO adjusts parry timing, enemy health and damage, Sha-Chi regeneration and limits, and rewards.
  • Easier or Harder Parry changes the number of frames you have to land a parry, in a PAK version that needs no extra loader.
  • Phantom Tweaks changes FOV and camera distance, removes black bars from ultrawide cutscenes, and can disable vignette, chromatic aberration, depth of field, lens flares and bloom.
  • PBZ Boss Phase Reset makes any death during a boss fight restart the entire fight.
  • PBZAutoCollect picks up loot, including chests, automatically when you walk up to it.
  • Bellbound makes normal enemies respawn when you travel or rest, and makes dying drop Phantom Dust; its author calls it experimental.
  • DS Style Controller Layout, in Xbox and DualSense versions, remaps buttons to a Dark Souls-style layout.

Visual Tweaks and the DLSS 5 Experiment

The camera and post-processing mods are the lowest-stakes changes on this list, because they alter how the game looks rather than anything stored in your progress. Phantom Tweaks is the headline example, mainly for players who want a wider field of view or a less cinematic, cleaner image. Before installing it, check what the game already offers: S-GAME says it supports 16:9, 16:10 and ultrawide screens beyond 3:1, and Game8's settings guide lists built-in options for Motion Blur, Camera Shake, Film Grain Intensity, Depth of Field Quality and sharpness.

The flashiest experiment is DLSS 5. DSOGaming reported on launch day that the game does not support DLSS 5 natively, so its writer used a third-party RHI mod to inject it. The results came with side effects, including a white outline around the character that could not be removed and lighting that shifted as the camera moved. The game already supports DLSS 4.5, FSR and XeSS out of the box, so this is strictly for tinkerers who are happy to accept visual glitches in exchange for experimenting.

Difficulty Tuners and Gameplay Mods

The gameplay mods change how the game plays, and they deserve more caution. PBZ Tuner AIO and Easier or Harder Parry let you widen or narrow parry windows and rescale enemy health and damage. Notably, two of the early mods push the game toward a classic soulslike rather than away from it: PBZ Boss Phase Reset removes the base game's habit of restarting a boss at its second phase, which Mobalytics documents in its guide to The Hunt, and Bellbound adds respawning enemies and a death penalty, two rules the base game does not have.

That design intent is worth knowing before you mod it away. PowerPyx notes that you lose nothing on death, and Soulframe Liang told 4Gamer, as reported by MP1st, that defeated enemies stay dead because the team wants everything in the game to be valuable. If you want a harder or easier game, try the built-in options first: Game8 confirms the four difficulty settings can be changed at any time from Options, with no trophy or achievement tied to the choice, and Hellwalker already brings more aggressive, adaptive enemies. Our soulslike comparison explains how those rules shape the game.

Controller Layouts: Mod or Menu?

The two DS Style Controller Layout mods exist because The Outerhaven's roundup states that you cannot remap your buttons in the game. S-GAME's own launch letter says something different: it offers three button layouts on PS5 and more flexible remapping options on PC. Game8's settings guide adds that choosing Controller Preset 2 on PS5 swaps Dash from R1 to Circle and moves execute to R1, which it describes as closer to the usual soulslike layout.

Because the sources disagree on how much remapping the PC version allows, open the Controls menu before installing a layout mod; a built-in preset may already give you what you want without touching game files. If you are on PC with an Xbox pad and wondering about platforms in general, our Xbox and Game Pass explainer covers why there is no console version for you yet.

The Real Risks: Updates, Saves and Support

None of these mods are supported by S-GAME, and the studio's support FAQ asks players who hit crashes, black screens or freezes to disable any third-party plugins or tools first when troubleshooting. Some non-PAK mods depend on a version of the UE4SS loader updated for this game, according to The Outerhaven, which adds another moving part every time the game updates. The game has already been patched once, with a day-one update of about 5 GB, so expect mods to break or need updating whenever future patches land.

Back up your saves before experimenting. S-GAME's FAQ explains that on Steam the save file is PBZSaveGame.sav inside the game's Saved, SaveGames folder for your Steam ID, and that the game keeps backup copies in a 1RealTime subfolder you can restore from if a save becomes corrupted. After restoring, the FAQ recommends saving at a Bell, closing the game and letting Steam finish uploading to Steam Cloud to avoid sync conflicts. The game is single-player with no online modes, and the Steam page lists Denuvo DRM. Our PC requirements guide covers file verification and other launch fixes if an install goes wrong.

What You Probably Do Not Need a Mod For

A surprising number of common mod requests are already in the menus. Before downloading anything, check these built-in options:

  • Difficulty: four settings, switchable at any time from Options, with Wayfarer for story-focused play.
  • Image clean-up: Motion Blur, Camera Shake and Film Grain Intensity controls in the display settings.
  • Violence: a Reduced Violence toggle in the game settings, according to Game8.
  • Upscaling: DLSS, FSR and XeSS support, plus frame generation and NVIDIA Reflex on supported cards.
  • Screens: ultrawide support beyond 3:1, which S-GAME says the game was adapted for.
  • Sound: an audio option to adjust the tone of clashing blades, which Soulframe Liang highlighted in his launch letter.

Who Should Try Mods Now, and Who Should Wait

Early mods suit some players far better than others. Matching the mod to the problem you actually have keeps the risk proportionate.

  • Ultrawide owners have the clearest case. Gameplay already supports wide aspect ratios, so Phantom Tweaks mainly matters for the black bars in cutscenes and for camera distance.
  • Players who find parries too strict should try Wayfarer first. If the parry window is the only problem, a frame-adjusting mod is a narrower fix than lowering everything else at once.
  • Soulslike purists can recreate the genre's harsher rules with the phase-reset and respawn mods, or stay official by playing Hellwalker and, after one completion, the 66 Days mode.
  • Anyone partway through a true ending run should wait until they have a fresh backup. PowerPyx's true ending checklist spans a long list of purple-icon quests, and a corrupted save at that stage would cost hours.
  • Steam Deck players should note that Valve still lists the game's compatibility as Unknown, so troubleshooting a modded install on the handheld adds a second layer of uncertainty.

Whichever group you are in, install one mod at a time and play a little between additions, so that if something breaks you know exactly which change caused it.

Want the Results Without Touching Game Files?

Many players install tuners just to skip the gathering and start a run fully equipped. A modded save gets you there without loaders or file swaps, and it works on PS5 as well as PC: the store's Phantom Blade Zero mega modded save covers the whole roster of main and Sha-Chi weapons, puts 73 accessories and 17 medicines at full upgrade, and fills your inventory resources to 9,999.

The listing names PlayStation 5 and PC as its platforms and rules out Xbox and Nintendo Switch 2. Bring your own copy of the game; the save's four fresh Cycle 1 slots then let you choose between upgraded and level 1 weapons. The PS5 platinum trophy service sits alongside it on the Phantom Blade Zero hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I find mods for the game?

The early mods covered by The Outerhaven are hosted on Nexus Mods, and they are all for the PC version.

Can you mod the PS5 version?

The community mods released so far are PC files. On PS5, the closest option is a modded save, which changes your progress rather than the game's files.

Is there a mod that makes enemies respawn?

Yes. Bellbound respawns normal enemies when you travel or rest, but its author says it is experimental and untested across a full playthrough.

Can mods break after a patch?

They can. Patches change game files, and S-GAME's support FAQ asks players to disable third-party plugins first when troubleshooting crashes or freezes.

Where are the save files on Steam?

S-GAME's FAQ points to PBZSaveGame.sav in the game's Saved, SaveGames folder for your Steam ID, with automatic backups in a 1RealTime subfolder.

Can I make the game easier without mods?

Yes. Switch to Wayfarer from the Options screen at any time; no trophy or achievement depends on difficulty.
