Helldivers 2 Illuminate Guide: How to Beat Every Unit

Helldivers 2 YouTube thumbnail: The BEST Ways to Destroy EVERY Illuminate in Helldivers 2

To beat the Illuminate in Helldivers 2, kill Watchers first because they are the only Illuminate unit that can call reinforcements, bring sustained damage rather than one big armor-piercing shot, and keep moving instead of digging in. Save explosives and anti-tank weapons for Harvesters, Fleshmobs and the newer piloted constructs, and learn the instant kills: an Overseer dies when its right arm is destroyed, while Elevated and Crescent Overseers die when their jetpack or backpack goes. This Illuminate guide walks through each enemy type you will fight, the four subfactions and a loadout that handles all of them.

Unit stats and weak points come from the community Helldivers Wiki's enemy pages, and timing details from Arrowhead's Steam patch notes and announcements, including the Devoid of Liberty update and the October 20, 2026 patch. We checked all of it in November 2026.

How the Illuminate Fight

The Illuminate, nicknamed squids, mix hordes of converted human Voteless with smaller numbers of armed Overseers, flying drones and tall machines. Most of their units carry little armor but a lot of health, and many sit behind energy shields or ablative plating that soaks up single heavy hits. The wiki's summary is blunt: favor high damage per second over high armor penetration, and stay mobile, because Voteless are slower than bugs, cannot leap and are easy to outrun in light armor.

They also hit with explosion and arc damage more than the other factions, and most non-city Illuminate missions take place in or around colony megastructures, so expect close-quarters fighting between buildings. Check the mission map before locking in a loadout, since the size of the colony varies a lot from map to map.

Not every Illuminate planet fields the same army. The galactic map lists a subfaction for each Illuminate world: the Mindless Masses (extra Voteless and Fleshmobs, no Elevated Overseers or Stingrays), the Appropriators (pure Illuminate soldiers and piloted machines, no Voteless at all), the Vote Snatchers (the Void-mutated Crusher and Wretch) and the Invasion Fleet, which adds the regular roster on top of another subfaction. Arrowhead's creative director said in September 2026 that grouping enemies into fleets like this is meant to stop any single loadout from working everywhere, so read the planet before you drop.

Priority One: Watchers and Warp Ships

Watchers are flying drones that sweep the area with a blue light and turn pink when they spot something suspicious. If they see you again or take sustained fire, they halt and launch flares that summon Warp Ships full of reinforcements, and the actual call goes out slightly before the flares appear, marked by an "Illuminate Ships Incoming" message at the top of the screen. That makes them the first target in every fight.

  • Aim for the center. A Watcher has 600 health and can lose several fins without dying, so body shots matter more than clipping its wings.
  • One-shot options. The APW-1 Anti-Materiel Rifle and RS-422 Railgun kill a Watcher with a single hit to the main body.
  • Stun to interrupt. The ARC-3 Arc Thrower and ARC-12 Blitzer stun Watchers mid-call and leave them hanging still for an easy kill.
  • Mind the fall. A Watcher shot down at speed can explode when its carcass hits something, so do not stand underneath it.

If reinforcements do arrive, an airborne Warp Ship without its shield dies to a single FAF-14 Spear rocket or a Recoilless Rifle hit to the fuselage. Grounded Warp Ships at Illuminate encampments need their shield stripped first; it recharges 15 seconds after it breaks, then an explosive thrown into the open bay door, or a stratagem with enough demolition force, finishes the ship.

Voteless and the Three Overseers

Voteless are former Super Earth citizens turned into a melee horde, with 100 to 160 health depending on variant. Fire kills them outright even with no other damage, gas both kills and confuses them, and a single shot from most automatic weapons can remove a leg. High-volume weapons like the Liberator Carbine or the Torcher flamethrower handle crowds well, and the Tesla Tower and Flame Sentry are strong area denial.

  • Overseer (600 health): carries an energy shield on its left arm that covers the upper and middle body, and a medium-armored helmet over its weak head. Destroying its right arm kills it. Explosive weapons like the PLAS-1 Scorcher damage it straight through the shield, and medium-penetration weapons such as the JAR-5 Dominator or P-4 Senator crack the helmet. Shotguns like the SG-20 Halt and SG-97 Sweeper stagger it once the armor is off. Keep your distance, because its melee sweeps knock you down.
  • Elevated Overseer (450 health): a jetpack trooper that hovers about 10 meters from you, fires seven-round plasma bursts and throws grenades. Destroying the jetpack makes it explode and dies with it. Arc weapons and the Halt's stun rounds pin it in place, and the P-92 Warrant's tracking rounds ignore its dodging.
  • Crescent Overseer: an artillery unit that lobs plasma over cover from long range and usually appears only one or two at a time. Since the October 20, 2026 patch, destroying its backpack kills it instantly, which makes it the least durable Overseer once you find it.

Harvesters, Fleshmobs, Stingrays and Leviathans

The Harvester is a 3,000-health tripod with a regenerating shield that absorbs any single instance of damage, a disintegration beam that kills almost instantly and an arc blast at close range. The two prongs above and below its eye are its shield generators, and destroying just one disables the shield for good. After that, aim for the eye or the hip joints: anti-tank shots like the EAT-17 and Recoilless Rifle are easiest to land on the eye, while weapons with high durable damage do better on the joints. Its exterior plates ignore pure explosive damage below heavy penetration, so a 500kg Bomb is less reliable than it looks, but shrapnel weapons like the R-36 Eruptor and the Autocannon's flak rounds strip the shield in one or two shots.

The Fleshmob is a 5,000-health mass of fused Voteless with no fatal weak point, so it dies to raw damage. Its upper head chunks pass 150 percent damage to its main health, which is where to aim. Beyond 30 meters it winds up and charges like a Charger, so sidestep and keep firing; breaking its arms stops its swipes. Explosive and shrapnel weapons work best: the wiki counts four grenade launcher shots or three StA-X3 W.A.S.P. hits per Fleshmob, and the Airburst Rocket Launcher and Orbital Airburst Strike are both strong picks.

Stingrays are fighters that circle the map, then dive and strafe along a glowing blue line on the ground. Run sideways out of the line rather than forward, go prone with explosive-resistant armor if you cannot escape, or use a Jump Pack or Warp Pack. Activating a SEAF SAM Site can shoot them down, and their strafes damage other Illuminate too, although Overseers are immune.

Leviathans are 15,000-health warships that only appear over cities on planets with the Leviathan Blockade modifier, up to five at once on Impossible and above. Their four beam turrets can be destroyed with heavy-penetration support weapons, and the LAS-99 Quasar Cannon and EAT-17 each take one out in a single shot. Smoke stratagems block their line of sight, and exosuits and FRVs are a bad idea underneath them.

Appropriators and Vote Snatchers

The Appropriators field only pure Illuminate units, so you can trade some crowd control for anti-armor. The Veracitor (3,000 health) is a piloted melee construct that can spot you from 100 meters; destroying its head permanently drops the pilot's shield, and its arms are only medium-armored, so a Machine Gun or Maxigun can take them apart. The Gatekeeper (2,500 health) fights at range with a charged plasma cannon; its forehead horn is the shield generator, and one heavy anti-tank shot to the stump holding the cockpit can destroy it outright. Both constructs shrug off pure explosive damage on their limbs. Swarms of Obtruder drones (400 health) fill the gaps; they explode when killed, so do not melee them overhead, and Autocannon flak or a Guard Dog backpack thins them quickly.

The Vote Snatchers arrived with the Devoid of Liberty update on August 12, 2026. On their planets Watchers, Harvesters, Stingrays and every Overseer variant are replaced by two mutants, and since there are no Watchers, they cannot call reinforcements; instead they spawn in larger patrols and guard points of interest. The Crusher has 6,000 health and regenerates 30 health per second shortly after taking damage, so focus fire on its armored helmet with an Autocannon or Railgun to expose its weak head, and do not get hit by its club, which kills on a direct hit. A single thermite grenade or C4 brick can also bring it down. The Wretch (450 health) pounces like a Hunter, and removing its head does not kill it, so shoot its bladed limbs instead; fire and gas slow it, and the Machine Gun or MGX-42 Bullet Storm handles groups.

Building a Loadout for the Squid Front

Pick your support weapon to cover the heavies, and your primary to cover everything else. A high fire-rate primary (the wiki points to options like the Liberator Carbine, Tenderizer, MP-98 Knight and SMG-203 Gallant against Appropriators) keeps Voteless and drones off you, while one teammate carries something that strips shields or kills Harvesters, such as the Autocannon, Quasar Cannon or Recoilless Rifle. An arc weapon or a stun-capable shotgun answers Watchers and Elevated Overseers, and a fire or gas option shines on Mindless Masses worlds.

  • Mobility first. A Jump Pack or Warp Pack escapes Stingray runs and Fleshmob charges.
  • Stratagems: an Orbital Railcannon or 500kg Bomb for tough targets, plus a crowd tool like the Gatling Barrage; Orbital barrages are also effective against grounded Warp Ships because of their size.
  • Boosters: Stamina Enhancement for kiting and Vitality Enhancement for the explosive damage, both explained in our booster rankings.
  • Attachments: a recoil-reducing muzzle helps a primary hold on a Watcher at range; our weapon customization guide shows which ones to buy.

If you split time between fronts, compare this with our Terminid guide, where heavy armor penetration matters far more, and the older Automaton guide. Vehicles have their own rules here, covered in our vehicles guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Illuminate's biggest weakness?

Only Watchers can call reinforcements, so killing them early keeps fights small. Beyond that, most units are lightly armored, which rewards sustained damage over armor penetration.

How do you kill a Harvester fast?

Break one of the two shield generator prongs above or below its eye, then hit the eye with an anti-tank weapon or the hip joints with high durable damage. Flak and Eruptor shrapnel strip its shield quickly.

Why do Illuminate reinforcements keep arriving?

A Watcher spotted you. The call goes out just before its flares appear, so shoot Watchers on sight, or stun them with an arc weapon to interrupt the call.

What support weapon works best against them?

The Autocannon is a strong all-rounder because its flak rounds strip shields and shred drones, while the Quasar Cannon and Recoilless Rifle handle Harvesters and Leviathan turrets.

Do Voteless die to fire?

Yes. Burning alone is enough to kill a Voteless, so flamethrowers, incendiary shotguns and laser weapons that ignite targets clear hordes efficiently.

What are the Appropriators and Vote Snatchers?

They are Illuminate subfactions. Appropriators field pure Illuminate troops and piloted constructs with no Voteless, while Vote Snatchers replace most of the roster with the regenerating Crusher and the agile Wretch.
