Helldivers 2 Beginner Guide: What New Divers Should Know

Helldivers 2 YouTube thumbnail: The Ultimate Beginner's Guide to Helldivers 2 in 2025!

If you are starting Helldivers 2 in late 2026, the short version of any beginner guide is this: the mission objective comes first, stratagems called in from orbit do most of the heavy lifting, and friendly fire is always on. Finish Basic Training, play your first missions on the three lowest difficulties, learn how armor penetration works, and spend your early requisition on a few flexible stratagems rather than everything at once. The rest of this page explains each of those pieces in the order you will meet them.

We pulled the details from Arrowhead's official announcements and patch notes on Steam (including the August 2026 level cap post), Xbox Wire's launch-day boot camp tips, and the community Helldivers Wiki's Getting Started and currency pages, all checked in November 2026.

What Helldivers 2 Looks Like Right Now

Helldivers 2 is a third-person squad shooter for up to four players. It launched on PC and PS5 on February 8, 2024, and arrived on Xbox Series X|S on August 26, 2025, with cross-play across all three platforms. It is an online game, and on console that means internet access plus a paid subscription. Arrowhead Game Studios develops it and PlayStation publishes it.

You fight three enemy factions, the insect-like Terminids, the robotic Automatons and the alien Illuminate, across a shared Galactic War map where the whole player base pushes planets back and forth. Since June 2026 the war has been organized into Galactic War Campaigns, chains of Major Orders that run for roughly one to three weeks and pay out a reward when the community wins most of them; a Control Center terminal on your ship explains the current one. The August 2026 Devoid of Liberty update raised the level cap from 150 to 300, and the October 20, 2026 patch moved the PC version from GameGuard to Easy Anti-Cheat, with Steam Deck and Linux support unchanged.

How a Mission Actually Works

Every deployment has main objectives, marked with orange icons, and optional tactical objectives, marked in blue. In most mission types, completing the main objectives is what makes a mission a success, even if nobody reaches the extraction shuttle afterward. Tactical objectives are worth doing when they make the rest of the mission easier, such as a SEAF Artillery battery or a Stalker Lair you would otherwise be fighting all game.

Two things are easy to miss. First, samples only count if someone carries them onto the shuttle, while Super Credits, medals and requisition slips are credited to everyone the moment they are picked up. Second, every mission has a timer, usually between 12 and 40 minutes depending on the mission type. When it hits zero your Super Destroyer leaves orbit, taking stratagems, reinforcements and resupply with it, and the squad has to scramble to an emergency extraction. Calling the shuttle takes two minutes of holding the landing zone, so leave yourself a buffer.

Killing enemies is rarely the goal in itself. Outside missions and orders that specifically count kills, extra kills do not normally pay experience, so slipping past a patrol is often the smarter play than fighting it.

Stratagems Are Your Real Weapons

Stratagems are support calls from your ship: support weapons, backpacks, sentries, minefields, vehicles, orbital strikes and Eagle airstrikes. You open the stratagem menu (Ctrl on PC by default), enter a short directional code and throw the glowing ball where you want the delivery to land. A loadout holds up to four stratagems, and mission stratagems like Reinforce and Resupply are always available on top of those.

The permit colors tell you what each one does: red for offensive strikes, blue for supply items such as weapons and vehicles, green for defensive sentries and emplacements, and yellow for mission tools. Orbital strikes take longer to arrive but hit hard; Eagle strikes arrive quickly, carry several uses, then fly home for a rearm that takes 150 seconds. Xbox Wire's launch tips suggest practicing the codes on your ship before you deploy, which is good advice because fumbling a code while a Charger closes in is a classic way to die in your first week.

You start with two free stratagems at level 1, the MG-43 Machine Gun and the Orbital Precision Strike. A good first shopping list is the Orbital Gatling Barrage, the EAT-17 Expendable Anti-Tank and the Eagle Airstrike, which cost 8,500 requisition slips together. Our requisition slip guide lists what everything else costs and how to avoid hitting the 50,000 cap, and the older loadout guide shows how to fill all four slots.

Armor Penetration Decides What You Can Hurt

The most important hidden mechanic is armor penetration. Every weapon has a penetration value and every enemy body part has an armor value. If your penetration is higher than the armor, you deal full damage and see a red hit marker. If the two are equal, you deal 65 percent damage and the marker turns white. If your penetration is lower, the shot ricochets and does nothing.

That is why the starting AR-23 Liberator, a light-penetration rifle, struggles against armored targets like Hive Guards and Automaton Devastators unless you shoot their weaker parts. The answer is either a medium-penetration weapon or aiming for weak spots: heads, joints, exposed flesh behind broken armor and glowing vents. Explosives follow a related rule called demolition force, which is why only certain grenades and strikes can close a bug hole. Our Terminid guide walks through the weak spots on every bug, which is the friendliest front to learn on.

Friendly fire applies to everything: bullets, explosions, stratagems and even some hazards. Before you throw a strike or a turret, check where your squad is standing.

Currencies, Levels and What to Chase First

You will collect five things: experience, requisition slips, medals, Super Credits and samples. Experience raises your level and unlocks stratagems; requisition slips buy those stratagems, upgrades and attachments; medals unlock items inside Warbonds; Super Credits buy Premium Warbonds and Superstore items and can be found in missions; samples upgrade your ship. Arrowhead said in August 2026 that everything that matters for a loadout unlocks by around level 25, and that the climb to level 150 alone takes several hundred missions, so treat higher levels as a long-term badge rather than a requirement.

  • Difficulty: there are ten levels, from Trivial to Super Helldive. Rare samples first appear on Challenging (difficulty 4) and super samples on Extreme (difficulty 6), and rewards grow with every step. The difficulty guide covers when to move up.
  • Ship modules: cheap tier 1 upgrades such as Donation Access License make a big difference early. See our ship module priorities.
  • Weapon customization: attachments for primary weapons open up from level 10.
  • Boosters: each player brings one squad-wide perk from a Warbond; the free Helldivers Mobilize Warbond includes several good ones.

A First-Week Plan for New Recruits

If you want a simple sequence to follow, this order spends your early resources where they help most and keeps every session productive.

  1. Finish Basic Training. It unlocks a bronze trophy and leaves you with 1,000 requisition slips to spend.
  2. Play Trivial and Easy missions on any front until the stratagem codes feel automatic and you are extracting reliably.
  3. Buy the first stratagem wave (Gatling Barrage, EAT-17, Eagle Airstrike) as your level allows, rather than the first thing that unlocks.
  4. Spend your first common samples on Donation Access License and Liquid-Ventilated Cockpit, which cost 60 and 80 commons.
  5. Put medals into the free Helldivers Mobilize Warbond. Hellpod Space Optimization costs 15 medals on page 3 and Vitality Enhancement costs 20 medals on page 4, and both help every drop.
  6. Move up to Challenging once the squad finishes Medium missions comfortably, so rare samples start flowing.
  7. At level 10, start leveling and customizing the primary weapon you enjoy most instead of spreading experience across several.

Work through that list at your own pace and Hard missions should start to feel within reach by the end of it, at which point the rest of the game opens up naturally.

Squad Habits That Keep Everyone Alive

Reinforcements are a shared budget. A solo Helldiver starts with five, and once the pool runs dry the next reinforcement takes two minutes to come back, so a few careless deaths early can strand the squad later. Call in fallen teammates quickly and away from the fight that killed them, and give the reinforced player a moment to grab their gear from the Hellpod.

  • Agree on a sample carrier and keep that person out of the front line so the haul makes it home.
  • Use pings to mark enemies, objectives and items; it is faster than typing in the middle of a firefight.
  • Split jobs: one player with anti-armor, one with crowd control and one watching the flanks covers most problems.
  • Welcome the SEAF: since August 2026, Super Earth Armed Forces squads can appear as a planet modifier, fighting alongside you and handing out stims.
  • Know when to leave: if the timer is under five minutes, stop exploring and head for extraction.

Before your first long session on PC, it is also worth five minutes in the options menu. Our settings guide explains which graphics options cost the most performance in a game that leans hard on the CPU.

When the Early Grind Feels Slow

Some returning players and newcomers would rather skip the first stretch of leveling and currency grinding and get straight to playing with friends on higher difficulties. The store's Helldivers 2 boosting hub collects services such as level boosting, Super Credits, medals boosting and requisition slip farming for PC and PlayStation accounts. Open a listing to see its platform options, delivery details and current availability before you decide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Helldivers 2 cross-platform between PC, PS5 and Xbox?

Yes. Xbox Wire's announcement for the Xbox Series X|S version, which launched on August 26, 2025, confirmed cross-play on all platforms, so PC, PS5 and Xbox players share squads and the same Galactic War.

Do you need a subscription to play online?

On console, yes. Arrowhead and Xbox both state that gameplay requires internet access and a paid-for subscription on console, and that wording applies to PS5 and Xbox rather than the Steam version.

What difficulty should a new player start on?

Start on Trivial, Easy or Medium while you learn stratagem codes and weak spots, then try Challenging once your squad is finishing missions comfortably and wants rare samples.

What should I unlock first?

Keep the free Machine Gun and Precision Strike, then buy the Orbital Gatling Barrage, EAT-17 and Eagle Airstrike. After that, add the Recoilless Rifle at level 5.

Can you play the whole game solo?

Yes. You can deploy without a squad, but you get only five reinforcements and no one to cover you, so drop the difficulty a step or two and lean on stealth.

How long does it take to reach max level?

A very long time. Arrowhead says reaching level 150 takes several hundred missions and that level 300 takes more than double that, but the useful unlocks are done by about level 25.
