Free Fire Region Change: Can You Switch Servers?

Garena Free Fire YouTube thumbnail: How to change Location / Region in Free Fire

You cannot change the region or server of an existing Free Fire account yourself: the game assigns a server when the account is first created and offers no switch in its settings. The only server moves on record were run by Garena itself, such as moving Bangladesh players off the India server in 2021 and Nepal players to South Asia Server 2 in 2022, plus narrow transfer requests that Garena accepted for those cases. What you can change is the location used for the regional weapon leaderboard, which is a different setting that people often confuse with a region change.

We checked this against Garena's Free Fire support center articles on region transfers and the weapon leaderboard (read through archived copies, since the live help center blocked automated access), Garena's anti-cheat FAQ on ff.garena.com, Esports.net's server guide, Sportskeeda's reports on the Nepal transfer and Free Fire MAX notices, and recent PCQuest and TechCrunch coverage of Free Fire in India, in November 2026.

How Free Fire Assigns Your Server

Free Fire runs separate servers for different parts of the world, and your account belongs to one of them. Esports.net's guide puts it simply: Garena does not allow players to change servers, and when you create an account for the first time the game automatically picks the nearest server for you. Sportskeeda's coverage of South Asia gives a sense of how fine-grained this is, noting that the region has several servers, including ones for India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

The server decides who you can play with. When Garena moved Nepal's players in 2022, its notice said they would no longer be able to chat or group with players from other servers. It also shapes which events and shop rotations you see, since many limited events are reported for specific servers rather than worldwide.

There is no Change Region button to look for. Some sites claim to have found one in the account settings, but nothing in Garena's own help articles describes such an option, and the support center's only region transfer guide covers a single, closed case described below.

When Garena Moved Players Itself

Every documented server change came from Garena, not from players. Two examples show how it works and what moves with you.

  • Bangladesh, 2021. Garena's support article on region transfers, dated 9 June 2021, explains that when a Bangladesh server launched, players from Bangladesh who had been on the India server were migrated to it. The FAQ answered the obvious follow-up directly: accounts from other regions could not transfer to the Bangladesh server, only Bangladesh players from the India server.
  • Nepal, 2022. Sportskeeda reported an in-game notice telling players from Nepal that they would be moved from the India server to South Asia Server 2 on 21 March 2022, with official mail sent between 18 and 20 March. Diamonds, memberships and items moved with the accounts, custom game settings were reset, and guild leaders' guilds moved with them.

The Nepal notice is also the clearest picture of what a server split does to a social group. Sportskeeda's summary says guild members left on a different server could no longer play with the guild, leaders had the option to remove those members, and Nepali players who belonged to a guild led from another server were told to change guilds after the move. In other words, even an official transfer that keeps every diamond and item can still break up the squads you play with, which is worth remembering before wishing for a server change.

The Bangladesh article also set out the limits of support. Region transfer requests were accepted only from India, Nepal and Bangladesh, and only if the account qualified, while requests from players in other countries would not be entertained. Garena added that sending multiple requests would not speed anything up and might be marked as spam.

The Leaderboard Location Setting Is Not a Server Change

A lot of searches for a region change are really about the regional weapon leaderboard, where your weapon glory ranking is compared with players in a local area. Garena has an article on changing that location, updated 21 February 2023, and the steps are short.

  1. Tap the ranked season icon.
  2. Tap the Weapon Glory Leaderboard icon.
  3. Tap the Location icon.
  4. If the game detects that your IP address location has changed, it shows the new region it detected. If no change is detected, you cannot pick another region.
  5. Tap confirm. The new location takes effect on the following Monday, and you get a notification that the change succeeded.

This only changes which leaderboard area your weapon ranking counts toward. Your account stays on the same game server, with the same friends, events and matchmaking pool.

Why Region Tools and VPN Tricks Are a Bad Idea

Search results for this topic are full of apps and websites promising to move an account to another server. None of them can do what Garena's own support will not, and several categories of offer are worth recognizing so you can ignore them.

  • Region changer apps and modified clients. Garena's anti-cheat FAQ defines cheating as using unauthorized third-party programs not released by Garena, modifying the game client, or playing in a modified client to reach functions that do not exist in the official game. A tool that claims to rewrite your account's region fits that description.
  • Services that ask for your login. Garena's support center warns that anyone asking for your game login credentials is almost certainly running a scam aimed at your account or payment details.
  • VPN guides. Some guides suggest creating a fresh account through a VPN. Even Esports.net, which describes that route, notes it only gives you a new account on the other server, not your old one, and recommends staying on the server you were assigned to avoid repercussions.

The core problem is that a new account starts from nothing. Your level, items, Prime level and Evo upgrades stay on the original account and its server. If you want to understand what you would be leaving behind, the guides to Free Fire Prime levels and Evo gun upgrades show how much of an account's value is tied to it.

India: The 2022 Ban, Free Fire MAX and Free Fire India

India is the region where server questions get the most complicated. TechCrunch reported that India banned Free Fire in 2022 as part of a wider block on dozens of apps, and that a relaunch Garena announced for 5 September 2023 was postponed and still had not happened by March 2024. Through those years the original app stayed blocked, and Sportskeeda's 2023 coverage noted that Indian players relied on the Free Fire MAX app to carry their progress forward.

The picture changed recently. PCQuest and Mobigyaan reported that Garena released Free Fire India as a separate, free app on Google Play and the App Store on 28 October 2026, with game data hosted on servers in India, parental consent required for players under 18, and playtime limits and spending caps. Reports in the days after launch did not agree on how existing Free Fire MAX accounts and progress carry over, so as of November 2026 follow Garena's in-app instructions for your account rather than any third-party guide, and keep your account bound before you try the new app.

Moving to Another Country: What to Do

If you relocate permanently, you have three realistic choices, and none of them involves a tool.

  1. Keep playing on your original server. Your account still works from a new country. Expect higher ping if the servers are far away, but your progress and purchases stay intact.
  2. Ask Garena's support. Submit a request through the support site for your current server and explain the move. Be realistic: the only published transfer process was the narrow 2021 Bangladesh case, and Garena said requests outside the listed situations would not be processed.
  3. Start a new account locally. This puts you on the local server with local friends, but from level 1. Use a different platform login for it, because Garena's binding rules say a platform account that is already bound to one game account cannot be bound to another.

Whatever you choose, protect the original account first. Bind it and add a recovery email, as explained in the Free Fire binding guide, and keep the login details safe so that account recovery stays possible if a phone is lost during the move.

Already on the Wrong Server for Your Friends?

Because a server cannot be switched, players who want to join friends elsewhere either start fresh or look at accounts that already exist on that server. The store's Free Fire hub lists accounts from marketplace sellers with the server named in each listing, along with level, Prime level, gun skins, Evo guns and bundles, which matters here because an account will stay on the server shown. Garena's Terms of Service are clear about the publisher's stance: under clause 6.2, accounts are non-transferable and for personal use only, and attempted transfers are void and may lead to suspension or termination.

If you keep your current account instead, playing with friends on another server is not possible, but you can still follow the same events. The rare bundles guide notes which past returns were limited to particular servers, which explains why your friends abroad sometimes see items you never did.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change my Free Fire server without losing my account?

Not on your own. There is no in-game option to move an account to another server. Server moves have happened only when Garena migrated players itself, as with Bangladesh in 2021 and Nepal in 2022.

How is my Free Fire server chosen?

The game picks the nearest server automatically when you create the account for the first time, and the account stays there.

How do I change my region on the weapon leaderboard?

Tap the ranked season icon, then the Weapon Glory Leaderboard icon, then the Location icon. You can only switch if the game detects an IP address change, and the new location applies from the following Monday.

Do region changer apps work for Free Fire?

No legitimate one exists. Garena counts unauthorized third-party programs and modified game clients as cheating, and anyone asking for your login to move your account is very likely a scammer.

Is Free Fire available in India now?

Free Fire was banned in India in 2022, while Free Fire MAX remained the version Indian players used. A separate Free Fire India app was reported as released on 28 October 2026 with India-hosted servers.

Will my diamonds move if Garena changes my server?

In the 2022 Nepal transfer, Garena moved diamonds, memberships and items along with the accounts, though custom game settings were reset.
