To gift a skin in Fortnite, open the in-game Item Shop, select the item, press Gift, choose a friend and confirm the purchase. The button only works once your account has two-factor authentication and is level 2 or higher, the friend has been on your list for at least two days, and you have sent fewer than five gifts in the past 24 hours. Gifts come out of the current Item Shop, you pay for them with your own V-Bucks, and once sent they cannot be refunded.
We checked these rules in November 2026 against Epic's help articles on how gifting works, sending a gift in Battle Royale, gifting from the web Item Shop and setting up two-factor authentication, plus unplayed.gg's and Beebom's coverage of the Treasure Hunters pass gifting bonus.
The Requirements Before the Gift Button Works
Epic's gifting article lists conditions on both sides, and a single unmet one is enough to block a gift, so check all of them before you start browsing the shop:

- Sender: two-factor authentication must be enabled on your Epic account.
- Sender: your account must be level 2 or higher.
- Recipient: they must have been on your Friends list for at least 2 days.
- Recipient: they need to log in after the gift is sent to receive it.
- Recipient: their V-Bucks balance cannot be negative.
- Limit: you can send 5 gifts per rolling 24 hours, with the window counted from the time each gift was sent.
The two-day friendship rule is the one that trips up last-minute gifts. If you plan to surprise someone on a birthday, add them as a friend at least two full days earlier so the gift is not blocked on the day. The 2FA requirement is the other common blocker; it is switched on from the Password and security page of your Epic account, and our 2FA setup guide walks through each method.
The rolling limit matters during big shop days. Five gifts in a row on a Friday means the sixth has to wait until the first of those five is a full 24 hours old, not until a fixed daily reset.
Sending a Gift, Step by Step
Gifting happens inside the game. Epic's web Item Shop article is explicit that players can only buy cosmetic items for their own account there, so the website is no help for gifts. In Fortnite, the steps from Epic's help article are:
- Open the Item Shop and find the item you want to send.
- Select it and choose GIFT.
- Pick the recipient from your list, or type their display name.
- Confirm the purchase to send the gift.
When you search for the recipient, use their Epic Games display name rather than a console gamertag. Epic recommends this specifically so the gift reaches the right person, since console names and Epic names can differ and a gift to the wrong account cannot be pulled back.
Platform support is broad but not universal. Epic's gifting article lists Android, PC, PlayStation, Switch and Xbox as supported platforms. iOS is not on that list, so an iPhone or iPad player who wants to send a gift should do it from another device signed in to the same account.
On the receiving end there is nothing to accept in advance. Epic's article says the recipient gets the gift after logging in once it has been sent, which is why a friend who has not opened the game in a while will not see your gift until they next launch Fortnite. If you are sending something time-sensitive, such as an emote for a party later that night, tell them to log in first.
What You Can and Cannot Gift
Ordinary cosmetics currently listed in the Item Shop are the core of gifting: outfits, pickaxes, gliders, emotes and the bundles they come in. Everything outside that is where the exclusions start, and Epic's list is longer than most players expect.

- V-Bucks themselves, including packs that contain V-Bucks.
- Passes bought with V-Bucks. Only passes paid for with real money can be gifted.
- Battle Pass levels and Battle Pass level bundles.
- Real-money offers in general, except the OG, LEGO, Festival and Battle Passes.
- Fortnite Crew.
- Event Passes.
- Items that are not currently in the Item Shop.
- Dynamically priced bundles when the recipient already owns one or more of the items in them, a rule Epic added in update v31.40.
The "currently in the Item Shop" rule is the important one for collectors. You cannot gift something from your own locker, and you cannot gift an old skin that has not rotated back in. If a friend wants a skin that is out of rotation, the only option is to wait for it to return to the shop. Some skins never come back at all, which our rarest skins guide covers.
You also cannot send currency to cover a friend's purchase. Since V-Bucks cannot be gifted, the closest alternative is a Fortnite gift card, which adds money to the recipient's Epic account balance instead. Our card redemption guide explains how those differ from older V-Bucks cards.
Gifting a Battle Pass
Passes are giftable, with conditions. The pass has to be bought with real money for the gift, not with V-Bucks, and only the OG, LEGO, Festival and Battle Passes qualify among real-money offers. Epic's article adds two timing rules: pass gifting is turned off near the end of a season, and if a gifted pass is never used, the gift token is refunded as V-Bucks in-game when the season ends.
The current Treasure Hunters pass comes with a sweetener for gifting, though the details depend on who you read. Unplayed.gg reports that gifting it gives both you and the recipient a Dark Kawaii Team Leader outfit style. Beebom describes the bonus as the Dark Kawaii Team Leader outfit, pickaxe and back bling for gifting the pass to an eligible friend between November 1 and the end of the season. Check the in-game gift screen for the exact reward before you buy on the strength of either report.
Remember the friend's situation before gifting a pass. If they subscribe to Fortnite Crew, they already have access to the Battle Pass through it, so ask before you buy. Our Battle Pass explainer covers what the pass contains this season.
Pricing Surprises and Common Errors
The price you see when gifting can differ from what you would pay for yourself. Epic notes that prices can reflect discounts for content you already own, and those discounts may not apply when you buy the same content for someone else. The price shown in the gift flow is based on the recipient, so a bundle that looked cheap on your screen may cost more as a gift.
When a gift fails, Epic's article points to a short list of usual causes:
- You have already sent 5 gifts in the past 24 hours.
- The recipient already owns the item, or owns part of the bundle.
- The two of you have been friends for less than 2 days.
- On PC, clearing the FortniteGame temporary files can help when the gift screen misbehaves.
Ownership is the hardest one to check from your side, because you cannot see a friend's locker. Asking them directly, or asking them to check the item in their own shop view, saves a wasted attempt.
Gifts Are Final: Avoiding a Wasted Gift
Epic's rule is short: all gifts are non-refundable. Gifted purchases are also excluded from Return Tickets, so neither the sender nor the recipient can undo one through the return menu. Our refund tickets guide covers what can be returned, and gifts are firmly on the other list.
That makes a little preparation worthwhile. A short checklist covers almost every failed or wasted gift:
- Two or more days before: add the friend and switch on 2FA if you have not already.
- On the day: confirm the item is actually in today's Item Shop, since the shop rotates and gifts cannot come from anywhere else.
- Ask the friend whether they own the item or any part of the bundle.
- Check you have enough V-Bucks for the recipient-based price, which may be higher than the price you see for yourself.
- Type their Epic display name, not a console gamertag, and confirm.
After that, the friend simply needs to log in to receive it. If you are gifting to a younger player, check with whoever manages their account too, since Epic notes that children's Cabined Accounts can come with different features.
Other Ways to Add a Skin to a Locker
When the skin you have in mind is not in today's Item Shop, gifting is off the table, and that is where the store's Fortnite skins page comes in. It lists outfits, bundles, quest packs, wraps, pickaxes and platform keys, each with a Learn more page that spells out what is included and how it is delivered.
Read the delivery format closely. Several quest packs are sold as Xbox Live keys, some tagged for the United States and one marked Global, and one wrap comes as a global Epic Games key, while outfit listings such as Clyde and Freediver state email delivery and list PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch and mobile. The Fortnite hub links the rest of the store's Fortnite sections if you are shopping for something other than skins.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can't I gift in Fortnite?
Usually one requirement is missing: 2FA is off, your account is below level 2, the friend was added less than 2 days ago, or you already sent 5 gifts in the past 24 hours.
How long do you have to be friends to gift in Fortnite?
At least 2 days on your Friends list. The timer starts when you become friends, so add the person well before the day you want to send it.
Can you gift V-Bucks in Fortnite?
No. V-Bucks and packs containing V-Bucks are excluded. A Fortnite gift card, which adds Epic account balance, is the closest substitute.
Can you gift skins from your locker?
No. Only items currently listed in the Item Shop can be gifted, and you buy a new copy for your friend rather than transferring your own.
Can you gift skins on iPhone?
Epic's gifting article lists Android, PC, PlayStation, Switch and Xbox, and iOS is not on that list, so send gifts from another platform.
Can a Fortnite gift be refunded?
No. Epic treats every gift as final, and gifted purchases cannot be returned with Return Tickets either, so double-check the recipient before confirming.
